Bridges... the fastest way to make them used to be just dropping a log across a cleft. This is the only untrussed log bridge I've ever seen with a train on it, made of just two logs.
the Minnetonka was the Northern Pacific Railroad's Locomotive No. 1.
Built in 1870, it was first used in northern Minnesota, then brought to the the Olympic peninsula for use in logging.
Photo taken in the mid 1880's
The bridge is just two long logs spanning the river with sufficient structural strength to support the track, locomotive and railcars full of big logs.

Bonneville salt
The majority of the Salt Flats belongs to the Federal government, while a smaller portion is owned by the State of Utah.
The Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management, which is responsible for the Federal government’s portion of the Salt, is represented by the State Director for Utah. He has, as far as it affects the fate of the Salt, relinquished his power through disuse to the Division of Parks and Recreation of the State of Utah, which owns the remainder of the Salt.
The director of this organization along with the Democratic Governor of Utah, is directly responsible for what has happened to the Bonneville Salt Flats.

The Wright brothers, were next door neighbors with Frank Lockhart
two enemy historians and Lockhartphiles, Griffith Borgeson and Mark L. Dees, used to exhaust themselves arguing about who knew the most about Frank Lockhart.
One thing they agreed upon was that he was born on April 3, 1908, in Ohio, probably in Dayton, where the family’s next-door neighbor was alleged to be the father of the Wright brothers of Kittyhawk fame.
Wright Sr. was said to be a fire-and brimstone evangelical preacher; additionally he was an inventor with his own modest garage laboratory and was young Frank’s introduction to science.
In comparison to Campbell’s four-ton Bluebird, Lockhart’s own LSR contender, the Stutz Black Hawk, was a toy, weighing less than 3000 pounds and able to fit within the wheelbase of Bluebird.
Its construction process had been complex. Lockhart first grafted together two Miller straight-eights to create a blown 16; then he visited the Duesenberg works and carried off some of its best talent; finally, he hit up the struggling Stutz Motor Company for sponsorship cash.
By early 1928, his streamliner was ready to confront Campbell on the beaches of Florida. Campbell turned a critical eye on the Black Hawk and tut-tutted that she was so lightweight she might sail out of control; and sail she ultimately did, on two occasions. The second, on April 25, 1928, was the end of Lockhart.
Lockhart’s powerful legacy continued exerting itself. Sold by his widow at a 1928 estate sale, his matching pair of custom-built Millers remained so technically advanced that they succeeded in dominating the Indy 500 and the U.S. national championship for the next two years. And, of course, his Atlantic City numbers stood fast through the next 33.

Mark Dees, president of the 200mph Club, the Ferrari club, a land speed racer, and Pullman car restorer, author of the definitive book on the Miller race cars "The Miller Dynasty"
One problem, he did his research on the computers of the day, the early 90s. So, 5" floppies with a Tandy PC . And he died (Dec '96) with a password protection on his computer, and there you have it... all his work on what book he was working on at the time irretrievable
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/mark-dees.797588/#post-9443152
He was a grad of Stanford in '58, and then city attorney for Inglewood, and a member of the Super Fours Dry Lakes club, and wrote "The Miller dynasty: A Technical History of the Work of Harry A. Miller, his Associates, and his Successors" in 1981, the result of 20 years' research, and interviews (with Miller's surviving associates and his successors) and exclusive access to Miller's working drawings
A different breed altogether is the author who has achieved an enduring reputation by virtue of just one book. In fact, a number of the best books ever fall into this category, notably the recently revised and reissued The Miller Dynasty, written by Mark L. Dees http://www.motorsportmagazine.com/archive/article/september-1994/79/starting-motor-racing-library
If you look at the HRM coverage of Bonneville in '69 you get the impression that the B/GR and B/FR battle between Mark Dees and Peek Brothers was one of the more note worthy things of the week.

In the mid 80s he set up a Vintage Oval Track class at Bonneville and needed additional participants. So he contacted Gordon White, racing historian and Smithsonian Institute auto racing advisor, and Gordon's Offy powered Kurtis midget had won the Antique Automobile Association's Grand National First Prize in 1986 and of course everyone asked, "How fast will it go?" Gordon took the Kurtis to Bonneville in '87, '88, and '89. He then bought the 1928 Miller Packard Cable Spl. #18 and wrote 7 books on the history of auto racing in the U.S., including the story of the Offenhauser engine, a biography of Frank Kurtis, books on Harry Miller, Kurtis' Indianapolis cars, 'Lost Race Tracks' and a biography of Ab Jenkins.

Ken Gross when writing Hot Rod Milestones: America's Coolest Coupes, Roadsters, and Racers had a thank you note, and included Mark among the most recognizeable names in hot rodding. He said: "I'd also like to thank six departed, very knowledgeable friends: the late Dean Batchelor, Mark Dees, Gray Baskerville, Ray Brock, Tony Nancy, and Tom McMullen, all of which encouraged my interest. I'll never forget them."
Having preserved the Miller record in considerable detail, Mark Dee’s family heirs passed his collection of Miller photos on to White and along with the late Bob Sutherland, they made him the archivist of the surviving Miller drawings, most of which were drawn by Miller’s long time engineering accomplice and draftsman Leo W. Goossen and then built by the third member of the team Fred Offenhauser. A veritable gold mine of prewar racing and engineering design genius, the archives represent a historical treasure of immeasurable value.
http://hotrodenginetech.com/the-marvelous-mechanical-designs-of-harry-a-miller/
in the Hot Rod Reader, Mark wrote in chapter 8, What is Bonneville, How to go racing at Bonneville
He also wrote "A Technical History of the Racing Flathead,"
Among his parts collection were Halibrand rims from the Mickey Thompson/ Bill Burke Punmpkin Seed Bonneville car
New for Speedweek in 1962 was the Mark Dees and Mike Scott built Class D Streamliner entered under the name Mark Dees-Racer Brown. The slippery front wheel drive car was powered by a 180" Pontiac Tempest 4-banger and was built to take Bill Burke's Pumpkin Seed record of 205.949 mph set in 1960 with a Bill Stroppe prepped Falcon-6 for power.
The good news was the car made it to the salt just a little late and unpainted. The bad news is there were to many bugs to work out so no speeds were recorded. It's interesting to note that Scott built the body off a buck and then a chassis was constructed to fit within it.
Mark was back with the car in '63 and only managed to run a slow 134.12 mph against the now 222.791 mph record set by the Vesco boys the year before. A last ditch effort with the car in '64, now with a 470" Chrysler and running in Class B, resulted in a quick 237.78 mph run but was not quick enough to match the Hammon-McGrath-Whipp Redhead class record of 302.812 mph.

(1972 article in Car and Driver)
Many of the racers were convinced that all their honest effort had succeeded in preserving the Salt Flats. Jerry Jones is the President of the SCTA which sanctions Speed Week. He says, "We talked to Governor Rampton, we've seen the University studies, and you can go look at the steel poles that are sunk in the Salt out by the start. They measure the depth of the salt, and they haven’t changed in five years. It's still as deep as it ever was. It just migrates within the basin from area to area in different years."
Mark Dees, uses these two U.S. Geological Survey aerial photographs to state his case against Kaiser. The left photo was taken in 1953, the right in 1970. In both, the dotted line indicates the Twenty-Five Mile Trench of Kaiser, while the solid line indicates the outer edge of the shrinking Salt Flats. Jones’ complacent attitude is not shared by all the racers. Mark Dees is president of the prestigious 200 M.P.H. Club. He has become something of a monomaniac on the condition of the Salt, but he also has factual information to support his case.
One of the most telling pieces of evidence is a pair of aerial photographs taken by the United States Geological Survey. One was taken in I953 as part of Project 121, and the other in 1970 as part of project GS-UCMV. As Dees says, “These photos clearly show that the incredible actinic whiteness of 1953 has given way in 1970 to a blotchy area of reduced size, indicating that the thickness of the salt has been materially reduced and the Flats themselves are being pulled in.‟ On-site observation makes this obvious to anyone who was there in the old days. How could it be otherwise, when Kaiser pumps away thousands of tons of salt solution every year."

Mark owned a 1916 Pullman Heavyweight private car, ex-San Joaquin and Eastern RR business car "San Marino," ex- Southern Pacific "Del Monte" #107 (both Huntington roads) 1927-1978, sold to Mexico, returned and rebuilt in Texas, bought by Dees and renamed "San Marino" again. Still has original 1916 wood interior. He also owned ex-UP Lounge car "City of St Louis" #9011 (dome observation car), which became ex-Auto Train nightclub car that he renamed "Lionel," and ex-CP 4210 baggage car that could load automobiles through end doors, and had four built-in bunks for crew sleeping quarters, renamed "Pony Express."
Tom Beatty belly tanker, which debuted at the 1951 Bonneville event, with 188mph, was the 2nd belly tanker, and covered in the 1st issue of Hop Up
by 1957 is was going 211mph,
In 1959 it was up to 239 mph,
in 1963 it was up to 252 mph
Yes there are 8 fan belts on that supercharger.
Beatty retired the tanker in 1966, and it was bought and dissassembled and not reassembled until 1997

It has been a few weeks since the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show. As with previous shows, BlackBerry QNX displayed industry-leading automotive technology in its booth. QNX unveiled not one, but two concept cars - a Jaguar XJ, which showcased a unified cockpit experience, and a self-driving Lincoln MKZ, both of which were well-received by customers and media alike.
But we could not have reached this stage alone.
What may not be obvious is the incredible investment BlackBerry QNX and our ecosystem make in developing advanced technology demonstrations. In some cases, ecosystem partners work alongside BlackBerry QNX as key contributors. In other cases, ecosystem partners develop independent demonstrations integrating their technology along with QNX’s technology.
In every case, our partners’ dedication and hard work to turn ideas into reality is greatly appreciated.
At CES, for example, Livio, Qualcomm, Renesas, and Texas Instruments (TI), Polysync, University of Waterloo all helped showcase QNX’s technology innovations.
Livio hosted a demo of SmartDeviceLink (SDL) running on the QNX Platform for Infotainment. Pioneered by Ford, SDL allows seamless connectivity between smart phones and infotainment systems. In their private suite, TI demonstrated not one, but two instances of the QNX Platform for Infotainment running on their processor hardware.
Meanwhile, Renesas took people for test rides in the autonomous Lincoln MKZ they developed together with BlackBerry QNX. The deep level of collaboration required to achieve this is a true testament to the partnership, which generated overwhelmingly positive feedback. The University of Waterloo and Polysync contributed valuable technology to the Lincoln MKZ.
QNX -based digital instrument clusters were also well represented at CES this year. In their concept Maserati Quattroporte, Qualcomm demonstrated a digital instrument cluster based on the soon-to-be-released 64-bit version of QNX’s OS also known as, SDP 7.0.
Our User Interface partners had great demos. At the Luxor hotel, DiSTI Corporation assembled an impressive collection of demos, with clusters running on Intel, Renesas and TI silicon. DiSTI teamed with CoreAVI to demonstrate a top-to-bottom BlackBerry QNX based safety critical cluster.
Rightware Kanzi was used in the digital cluster of the QNX’s Jaguar XJ concept car. This demonstration also displayed Kanzi Connect, which allowed drivers to personalize their dashboard interface in real-time using their smartphone.
CES 2017 was a tremendous success for BlackBerry QNX, thanks in no small part to the dedication of our partner ecosystem. Our partners help us offer more complete systems to customers and we thank them for their steadfast and incredible support. It is through such relationships that we can expand our ecosystem to the benefit of the industry.

Behind this ordinary wall, inside a one bedroom apartment, a 1959 Ferrari 250GT PF Coupe was stored for 30 years in Hollywood. Look carefully, see the cracks in the wall? It's a hidden door with hinges
That window above, is the same window over the roof of the Ferrari
The apartment building owner bought the 250 GT in the 70s, enjoyed it for about 7 years, then decided to restore it, and needed a place for it to be out of sight and off the street while the engine was being rebuilt by the shop at Briggs Cunningham's museum.
So he cut out the wall and installed hinges for it's eventual return to the outside world, then rolled the car in, put the ramps in the apartment with the car, closed the wall, and with a fast coat of stucco and paint, instant - presto - chango.... the neighbors never realized the apartment was now a storage garage for a Ferrari.
It was on the first floor in a one-bedroom apartment, against the dining room wall facing the driveway. What the building owner had accomplished was inspired by a comic book strip, included that in the binder of documents with the Ferrari paperwork.
He hinged the hole in the wall so it’s a whole wall with a window and blinds and everything. It swings open, and he lined up ramps and rolled the car in. Later he took the engine and transmission out, and took the wheels off.
To get the car out they had the door cut open, swung the wall out and the hinge system thankfully still functioned. They used the same ramps that were used to put the car inside, lined them up, and had about five people pushing the car out.
The tire pressure was intentionally getting the car out so the car wouldn’t easily roll away as the brakes are non-operational. The whole process took around five hours.

Collector of Ariel liquidates 30 unrestored motorcycles at auction this year
After many years of collecting German WW2 machinery including Kettenkrads he returned to his first love and built up this collection of Ariels. “I searched out those bikes that were going to be broken up for scrap and rebuilt them. My idea was to save them for posterity.” Now the time has come to pass them on to others.

Pro cycling found to be rife with cheaters, first it was Lance Armstrong's admission of bloodwork, now at the cyclocross world championships, a bicycle with a motor hidden in the frame
Canadian pro Ryder Hesjedal crashing in a roundabout in the 2014 Vuelta Espana, shows the back tire powered long after he fell off the bike
For years there has been speculation in cycling that motorized cheating might be happening at the sport's highest professional level, but it has never been revealed until now.
Now check out this rider who isn't mature enough to realize you don't just charge past ALL the competition without exposing yourself as either the next Speedy Gonzales, or riding a powered bicycle, up hill, while sitting down
Istvan Varjas, the engineer who says he invented the tiny bike motor, which he says has been used surreptitiously in the Tour de France. What’s more, Varjas says he’s already at work on the next big cheating technology for cyclists: an electromagnetic wheel.
Varjas told 60 Minutes he thinks professional cyclists have used secret motors to cheat in pro races as early as 1998. Varjas says he didn’t knowingly sell motors for the purpose of cheating. He told 60 Minutes he just makes the device — what customers do with it is “not my problem.”
Now Varjas is developing the next generation in cheating technology using magnets, a battery, and electromagnetic coils which are also placed in the wheel. When the system is switched on, the electromagnetic coils create a magnetic field, which propels the magnets forward, spinning the wheel faster. Varjas says the system is silent, undetectable even to the rider.

I look forward every year to see what John D'Agostino has brought to the GNRS, this years is really cool, and looks so much better than it did on red carpet at SEMA (that Stutz Blackhawk was the exception, no one can fix those)
it really looks so much better on the white carpet, so much I didn't recognize it, and at the GNRS you can't get close to get interior photos, so, take a look at the beautiful interior from the SEMA gallery I link to at the bottom of this post
bigger better gallery from SEMA at http://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2016/11/dagostino-customs-displayed-this-beauty.html but clearly the red carpet was TERRIBLE
