Don't be fooled into believing Canada's 16% rise in full-size volume brand cars through the first two months of 2017 is a sign that the car market has legs.

These are exceedingly low-volume cars. Even collectively, this fleet-friendly Chrysler 300/Dodge Charger-led category has produced only 1940 sales so far this year. Sure, that's 16%, or 264 units, more than the segment managed one year ago. But it's 9% lower than the total achieved by the same cars during the first two months of 2015, and it's an inconsequential number, regardless.
1940 sales, in two months? That's what the Honda Civic, on its own, managed over the last two weeks. ![auto sales chart Canada large car sales chart February 2017](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbWBFB-fXx8sbW15tBZ4f97AxtBBBrIEbLaQTJFKuGc_0YP26LrHrstWfUsQ5e-FgR16Qr1gN4lC_7VZ9tjMMegEisD6hOWenkDA0g73itYq0sgzZ5tFOCpY2q3vwEMCj2pf-WK4bgg92a/s200/Canada+large+car+sales+chart+February+2017.jpg) |

Well, the Honda Civic is Canada's best-selling car, an affordable compact, hardly comparable to these semi-premium full-size cars. But what about the Mercedes-Benz C-Class?
1708 C-Classes have been sold already this year.
Times have changed. Get used to it.

For Canadian purposes - Hyundai USA doesn't yet breakdown sales figures for the sedan and much less costly coupe - the Genesis will now be shown with both these volume brands, with which Hyundai is a direct competitor, and midsize luxury cars, with which the Genesis competes.
GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better. Canadian sales of passenger cars dipped 5% in January 2017 as cars claimed only 29% of all new vehicle sales.
The full-size volume brand cars that form slightly less than 3% of that car market posted a collective 3% year-over-year sales decline despite gains from GM's two entries – Buick LaCrosse and Chevrolet Impala – and the Chrysler 300, the top-selling car in the category last month.![auto sales chart Canada large car sales chart January 2017](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKvSeYCGfgl9ObDRBzlqS7pNxa1skHUShKtAQOCMut8Qx2tpaU2j8lyWXeOYviaB46EttUJ81LzFI3ahbYQ50lAXshZwRQRIJ6W0vcVPn5_ZliQ2XMbs7dN9o_CKf97lS3SggLWbsyZqY/s200/Canada+large+car+sales+chart+January+2017.jpg) |

The Hyundai Genesis' 98% drop to 1 sale comes as the vehicle formerly known as the Genesis moved to the new Genesis brand. That car, the Genesis G80, produced eight January sales. The launch of the Genesis brand in Canada will be a slow one.
Meanwhile, at Hyundai's Kia partner brand, only five Cadenzas were sold last month. Only 699 Cadenzas have been sold since the big sedan's 2013 Q2 launch, an average of 15 per month.
Remove the Hyundai Genesis from the equation and full-size volume brand car sales rose 3% in January 2017.

Two Canadian-built, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles full-size sedans were Canada's two best-selling full-size volume brand sedans in 2016.
Canadian sales of the top-selling Dodge Charger and second-ranked Chrysler 300 declined 17% in 2016, a far faster rate of decline than the segment at large. (Their competitors were down only 7%.) But with all but one challenger falling to some degree, as well, the FCA twins conquered the category.Nissan's Maxima was clearly the exception to the rule in 2016. Sales jumped 35% to 2297 units, fifth among volume brand large sedans, but the highest Maxima output since 2006.
Former stalwarts, the Chevrolet Impala and Ford Taurus, saw their sales fall 14% and 3%, respectively. Impala volume has declined in ten consecutive years.

As Buick readies the new LaCrosse we would be included to expect Canadian sales improvements.
Yet given the degree to which consumers are veering away from this type of vehicle – LaCrosse sales, for instance, have fallen in eight of the last 11 years – a meaningful improvement may not be in the big Buick's near future.
