After a strong January, February 2017's sales of full-size luxury flagships declined 8%, sliding in large part because of a decline in sales of the top-selling Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

S-Class volume slid 30%, a loss of 28 sales in a category that lost 18 sales. The BMW 7-Series, with 41 sales, tied the Jaguar XJ as the second-ranked models in the class. XJ sales slid to a four-year low in 2016, but if growth continues at this pace, more than 600 XJs will be sold in Canada in 2017. |

Sales of the new BMW 7-Series, meanwhile, rose to a four-year high in 2016 and, at the current pace, sales would rise to a five-year high in 2017.
Audi A8 and Maserati Quattroporte sales are higher this year than last, at least through the first one-sixth of 2017, and while S-Class sales tumbled in February, the big Benz is up marginally year-to-date.
Genesis, meanwhile, has contributed 25 sales of the new G90 to the ledger in 2017. Is Hyundai's launch of the Genesis brand going as planned? There's more on that story at Autofocus.ca.

While Canadian sales of passenger cars slid 5% in January 2017, the biggest, boldest, flagship luxury limos posted a 24% year-over-year improvement.
Led by the Mercedes-Benz S-Class's 75% uptick to 70 January sales, sales across the category grew by 39 units. Sales of the Audi A8, BMW 7-Series, Jaguar XJ, and Maserati Quattroporte also increased. |

Granted, January is an exceptionally low-volume month for the Canadian auto industry even when, as in January 2017, sales climbed to the highest January level ever.
Assuming January's results point to a trend for the 2017 calendar year would be foolhardy.
Yet there will be a new Lexus LS. And if that car can turn around Lexus' fortunes in a category where Canadians have traditionally rejected Lexus, perhaps the category as a whole could be boosted.

Canadian sales of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class slid 7% in 2016, but the S-Class still easily outsold its rivals over the course of the calendar year.In fact, the S-Class outsold the Jaguar XJ and surging BMW 7-Series combined.
Because of the 7-Series' surge and a significant increase for the low-volume Maserati Quattroporte, sales across the sector increased in 2016. |

December was a particularly decent month, as well, with a 12% increase driving sales up to 292 units. After stumbling through much of 2016, the S-Class jumped 21% in December. XJ, LS, and Quattroporte volume improved, as well.
2017 will be another year of transition for the full-size luxury car sector as Lexus launches its all-new, fifth-generation LS sedan.
Never the powerhouse in Canada that it was (but no longer is) in the United States, Lexus has declared that the new, lower LS will be a more dynamic player. Canadian sales of the Lexus LS fell 84% between 2007 and 2016.

Don't draw too many conclusions from November 2016's Canadian full-size luxury car sales figures.
But you can draw some parallels. That which Toyota attempted to do with Lexus nearly three decades ago is the same upmarket move Hyundai is now attempting with the Genesis brand, launched in November 2016 with not a single Canadian dealer. One of the first two Genesis models launched is the Genesis G90, known in previous-generation form as the Hyundai Equus. One of the first two Lexus models released was the Lexus LS.
Now, at the end of the fourth-generation of the Lexus LS, the first Genesis G90 outsold the fourth Lexus LS in November 2016. |

Of course, Mercedes-Benz sold 86 copies of the S-Class in November 2016, nearly quadruple the total achieved by the Lexus LS and Genesis G90 combined.

Canadian sales of full-size flagship luxury cars slid 9% in October 2016 after experiencing healthy growth through the first three-quarters of 2016.
Let down by the uncommon Audi A8, the transitioning Porsche Panamera, and the top-selling Mercedes-Benz S-class, the gains reported by the BMW 7-Series and a couple of smaller players were cancelled out.Canadian sales of the BMW 7-Series, new this year, are essentially double what BMW managed through the first ten months of 2016. It's still highly unlikely that BMW will match the 7-Series sales total from 2012 – when 755 were sold – but the biggest BMW is undoubtedly on the rise.
