Minivan Sales In Canada - March 2017

Canadian sales of minivans jumped 25% in March 2017, surging as the industry surged despite a poor start to the year for the minivan sector in which sales fell 3% through the first two months of 2017.

Led by the Dodge Grand Caravan, which jumped 48% to 5459 units for a nine-month high, sales of MPVs rose by 1806 units. The Honda Odyssey tanked during a sell-down in the lead-up to the launch of the all-new 2018 Odyssey later this spring. Sales of Kia's Rondo mini-MPV likewise plunged.

Chrysler, meanwhile, finally began to produce meaningful Canadian sales numbers with the Pacifica.

Put it all together with a big Sedona increase, a sudden Mazda 5 uptick, and an 18% Toyota Sienna jump and Canadian minivan sales topped 9000 units in March 2017.

After six consecutive months of decline, big boosts from the Dodge Grand Caravan and Mazda 5 powered the category forward to a 5% gain in February. 

Sharp losses from the Kia duo and 11% drops from both the Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey tamped down growth.

The Chrysler Pacifica, likewise, has not yet proven capable of selling (at its much higher MSRPs) as its predecessor, the Chrysler Town & Country. Year-over-year, Chrysler minivan sales were down 35% last month.

But the value-oriented Dodge Grand Caravan grew its market share to 54% among MPVs and 59% in its "full-size" minivan segment. Grand Caravan sales are up by a tenth so far this year.

Canadian minivan sales tumbled 11% in 2016, a poor follow-up to the 1% uptick posted in calendar year 2016. But it's not an unexpected result after minivan sales declined on a year-over-year basis in each of 2017's final five months.

The Dodge Grand Caravan slid 7%, a loss of 199 sales, as FCA's minivan market share slid to 59% from 62% in January 2016.

With the Honda Odyssey about to be replaced by an already-revealed new model, Odyssey sales plunged 14%. Mini-minivan sales improved slightly at Mazda but declined at Kia. The Toyota Sienna also posted a modest decline. And the Dodge Grand Caravan's Chrysler siblings combined for a 62% drop to only 211 units, 207 of which were new Pacificas.

Built in Windsor, Ontario, the Dodge Grand Caravan owns 59% market share in its segment. FCA's trio earned 65% market share in 2016, down from 67% in 2015.

The Kia Sedona continues to be Canada's fastest-growing minivan. The Sedona was narrowly outsold by the newer, more upmarket Pacifica in November and owned only 6% of Canada's MPV market.
