U.S. sales of minivans continued to plunge in March 2017, falling 19% year-over-year for an eighth consecutive year-over-year decline.

Led by the surging Dodge Grand Caravan – future unknown – minivan volume was down by nearly 11,000 units compared with March 2016. Sales are fully down by a fifth so far this year.
Will new models help? The 2018 Honda Odyssey is due in showrooms soon. Media drives take place in Hawaii in early May. The 2018 Toyota Sienna, the refreshed version of 2015 and 2016's best-selling minivan, is just that: merely a refresh. Pictured above, it'll reach dealers later this year. |

In the meantime, FCA minivan market share rose to 55% in March 2017 from 48% one year ago.

U.S. sales of minivans plunged 20% in February 2017, in line with the 21% drop experienced by minivans one month ago.

Led by the Dodge Grand Caravan, which slid 2% year-over-year, minivan volume tumbled by more than 10,000 units. Declines were reported at every brand, including Chrysler.
The Town & Country/Pacifica combo jointly declined 22%. The rate of decline at Toyota, Nissan, Kia, and Honda were even worse. |

The Mazda 5, meanwhile, now appears to be officially dead. There could be a handful of units left on dealer lots yet to appear as sold in Mazda's ledger. But February 2017 was the first month in which Mazda USA failed to report a single sale of the company's mini-minivan.

Total FCA minivan sales – Pacifica, Town & Country, Grand Caravan – fell by 4799 units. Honda predictably lost more than 700 Odyssey sales.
But the Kia Sedona and Toyota Sienna, last year's top-selling minivan, suffered sharp declines, as well.

U.S. minivan sales jumped 6% to 553,506 units in calendar year 2016, slowing sharply at the end of the year after an FCA-powered clear-out surge in the early part of 2016.

December 2016's 18% decline, for example, was not out of character after sales tumbled in each of the last five months of the year, falling by double-digits on the percentage scale throughout the fourth-quarter. But the year as a whole was nevertheless a year of improvement for the minivan sector, though sales were down by nearly 1% compared with the 2014 calendar year.

The Toyota Sienna narrowly edged the Dodge Grand Caravan – by just 113 units – to end 2016 as America's top-selling minivan, the second consecutive year of leadership for the Sienna.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, which builds the new Chrysler Pacifica, the departed Chrysler Town & Country, and the second-ranked Dodge Grand Caravan, produced 249,115 total minivan sales in 2016, equal to 45% of the overall minivan market.
