U.S. sales of full-size flagship luxury cars dipped precipitously during the first one-sixth of 2017 but recovered nicely with an 8% uptick in March 2017.
U.S. Vehicle Sales By Model - April 2017 YTDU.S. Car Sales Rankings By Model - March 2017 YTD
Thanks to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class's 8% rise to 1434 units, the arrival of the new Porsche Panamera, and more growth from the new BMW 7-Series, and the inclusion of the Genesis G90 (the Hyundai Equus in a former life), sales across the category rose by roughly 330 units. |

Tesla estimates from HybridCars.com suggests Tesla sold 3100 copies of the Model S in March, more than enough to outsell the S-Class, 7-Series, and Panamera combined.
That 3100-unit result for the Model S represents a three-month high but a 9% year-over-year decline.

After a strong January, February 2017's sales of full-size luxury flagships declined 8%, sliding in large part because of a decline in sales of the top-selling Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
Canada Vehicle Sales Rankings By Model - February 2017 YTDCanada Car Sales By Model - February 2017 YTD
S-Class volume slid 30%, a loss of 28 sales in a category that lost 18 sales. The BMW 7-Series, with 41 sales, tied the Jaguar XJ as the second-ranked models in the class. XJ sales slid to a four-year low in 2016, but if growth continues at this pace, more than 600 XJs will be sold in Canada in 2017. |

Sales of the new BMW 7-Series, meanwhile, rose to a four-year high in 2016 and, at the current pace, sales would rise to a five-year high in 2017.
Audi A8 and Maserati Quattroporte sales are higher this year than last, at least through the first one-sixth of 2017, and while S-Class sales tumbled in February, the big Benz is up marginally year-to-date.
Genesis, meanwhile, has contributed 25 sales of the new G90 to the ledger in 2017. Is Hyundai's launch of the Genesis brand going as planned? There's more on that story at Autofocus.ca.

It was a nearly universal problem. HybridCars.com says sales of the Tesla Model S – an indirect rival – slid 11%, as well. The Audi A8 stood out because of a 15% uptick. Sales of the new BMW 7-Series rose 1%. But those gains added only 40 sales to the ledger.

While Canadian sales of passenger cars slid 5% in January 2017, the biggest, boldest, flagship luxury limos posted a 24% year-over-year improvement.
Led by the Mercedes-Benz S-Class's 75% uptick to 70 January sales, sales across the category grew by 39 units. Sales of the Audi A8, BMW 7-Series, Jaguar XJ, and Maserati Quattroporte also increased. |

Granted, January is an exceptionally low-volume month for the Canadian auto industry even when, as in January 2017, sales climbed to the highest January level ever.
Assuming January's results point to a trend for the 2017 calendar year would be foolhardy.
Yet there will be a new Lexus LS. And if that car can turn around Lexus' fortunes in a category where Canadians have traditionally rejected Lexus, perhaps the category as a whole could be boosted.

The replacement for Lexus' long-lived fourth-generation LS sedan was introduced at Detroit's North American International Auto Show last month. Far from a major player now, the LS was a top-selling luxury limo as recently as 2009.

Probably not.
