UK December 2016 (Top 5 Draft)

Third Consecutive Win for the Outlander PHEV

An impressive 39.000 plug-ins were sold in 2016, up 40% YoY, with the EV Share ending at a record 1.5%, up from 1.07% in 2015.

Looking at the models ranking, the Mitsu Outlander PHEV won for the the third consecutive time the Best Seller title, but the Japanese SUV domination is being significantly eroded, ending the year with 24% share, far from the 41% it had in 2015.

Still, it almost doubled the sales of the Second Placed Mercedes C350e, a new model that managed to displace the locally-made Nissan Leaf to Third Place.

The remaining top positions went to BMW models, with the BMW 330e ending its first year on the market in Fourth, this way underlining the importance of the company car segment in this market, while the BMW i3 benefited from a strong second half of the year to surpass the Tesla Model S and finish in Fifth.

In the manufacturers ranking, Mitsubishi (24% Share) won its third consecutive manufacturers title, but BMW ended dangerously close (22%),  which might foresee a new leader in 2017, while Mercedes won its first podium seat here, ending in Third, with 14% share.

Below, you will find the 2016 Trophy Room:

Best Selling Small Car: BMW i3, 2.540 units, above the 2.213 of 2015, while allowing it to win its third class trophy, the German hot Hatch is definitely an EV favorite in British lands;

Best Selling Luxury SUV: Volvo XC90 T8, 1.662 units. After an entertaining race with the BMW X5 PHEV, Volvo plug-in hybrid took the trophy of this booming class.

Best Selling MPV: BMW 225xe Active Tourer, 456 units. The arrival of the BMW model spiked sales of this class, selling almost twice as much as the Second Placed, the Mercedes B250e;

In 2016 Fuel Cells had their Year One on the UK market, with just 10 units being registered, with the Toyota Mirai registering eight of them.

No Alarms and No Surprises

Over 31.000 plug-ins were sold in the first three Quarters of the year, up 45% YoY, down from the three digit growth rates of last year, but with Q3 growing faster than Q2, one can say that, for the moment, Brexit wasn't a cause for alarm regarding EV Sales, in fact, since then  market share climbed to around 1.4%, a new all-time record.

Looking at the models ranking, there's really no surprises, Britain's most popular plug-ins remained in their seats, with the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV still holding the leadership, despite a 17% sales drop regarding the same period last year, with share dropping 4% over the last post, in June.

In the remaining podium seats, the Mercedes C350e lost a bit of momentum, dropping 2% in share, while reversely, the Third Placed Nissan Leaf recovered some stamina, recovering 2% share, to 11%, just 2% less than the Mercedes.

The BMW 330e is stable in Fourth and handicapped by production constraints (BMW doesn't even bother to make a 330e station wagon), so it is unable to go after the Mercedes midsize offering.

The Tesla Model S holds on to the Fifth Spot, but probably not for long, as the BMW i3 is profiting from the 33kWh version to jump positions and with less than 100 units separating them, it will be a question of time until the German Hot Hatch climbs to Fifth.

In the manufacturers ranking, Mitsubishi is still ahead of the pack, with 23% share, but the lead over the increasingly menacing BMW (17%) has been going down significantly, while Mercedes (14%) is defending its Third spot from Nissan (13%).

Premiums on the Attack Edition

Over 18.000 plug-ins were sold in the first Quarter of the year in the UK, up 30% YoY, down from the three digits growth rates of last year, but still firmly in positive territory and allowing the EV Share to climb to around 1.3%.

Looking at the models ranking, Britain's most popular plug-ins, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and Nissan Leaf, which in 2015 owned two thirds of the market, have lost momentum, if the Mitsubishi SUV still holds the leadership, despite a 24% sales drop, the Leaf not only lost the Second position to the Mercedes C350e, but is now seeing its Third Spot endangered by another Premium offering, the BMW 330e, that has jumped five places in three months, it will be a question of time until the Bimmer reaches the last place of the podium.

It wouldn't be surprising if, in a few months from now, the monthly leadership becomes an exclusive race between the Mercedes and BMW midsize offerings.

Despite dropping one position, the Tesla Model S saw their deliveries grow three fold, all while in the B-Segment/subcompact class, the Renault Zoe continues ahead of the BMW i3, but probably not for long, when the 33kWh version of the German hot hatch arrives, it will probably go on Hyperdrive mode and surpass not only the French product, but also a couple more in front of it.

In the manufacturers ranking, Mitsubishi is still ahead of the pack, with 27% share, but it is followed by the increasingly menacing BMW (17%) and Mercedes (16%).

A final reference for the seven Toyota Mirai registered, a car that sits beautifully the British landscape in places like Hull-upon-Haven.

UK All-Time Top 5 (Until July '16)

Outlander PHEV Kingdom

This was the market with largest time difference, as the last time i did this survey, it was December '13, and it shows, as at that time the Outlander PHEV fever had not yet landed and the Leaf was King, in fact, the Japanese hatch is the sole survivor of those seemingly archaeological times, when the Renaults Kangoo ZE and Twizy(!) were present.

Now, we have the BMW i3 in Third, with its Renault Zoe arch-rival running close, while in Fifth we already have the fleet-buyers new darling, the Mercedes C350e.

Turn the Tide Edition

Thanks to a new article on RAC Foundation, i can now post a ranking regarding UK's First Quarter of the Year.

Over 10.000 plug-ins were sold in the first Quarter of the year in the UK, up 23% YoY, down from the three digits growth rates of last year, but still firmly in positive territory and allowing the EV Share to stay above the 1% threshold. Now about that Brexit thing...

Anyway, looking at the models ranking, Britain's most popular plug-ins, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and Nissan Leaf, which a year ago owned two thirds of the market, they have lost share in a most significant way, now holding less than 30% of the market, inclusively with the Japanese hatch losing the Third position to the Mercedes C350e, all while the Tesla Model S saw their deliveries grow three fold, reaching the Fourth Position and becoming the surprise of the ranking, together with the Mercedes midsize offering, that beat all predictions to an amazing Second Place. It seems the tide is changing and Company/Fleet buyers have new favorites...

Regarding the rest of the ranking, two newcomers made an impact, the Volvo XC90 PHEV landed with an impressive #7, just like the 330e, which is now #9, not far from its i3 brethren, which dropped from #3 to #8. Did buyers preferred to go for the more normal 330e instead of the Star Wars-looking i3?

A final reference for the drop in sales of the BMW i8, down 48%, but despite this slowing down of sales, the UK is still the second largest market for the German Sports Car, only behind the USA.

Second Win for the Outlander PHEV

An amazing 28.000 plug-ins were sold in 2015, doubling the numbers of last year, with the EV Share now north of 1%, almost doubling the result of last year (1.07% vs 0.56%).

Looking at the models ranking, the Mitsu Outlander PHEV ended miles away from Second Place Nissan Leaf, itself also comfortably ahead of the Third Placed, the BMW i3, while the Renault Zoe ended in #4, resulting in 2015 repeating last year Top 4 positions.

In the manufacturers ranking, Mitsubishi (41% Share) won its second consecutive manufacturers title, followed by Nissan (21%) and BMW (11%).

Below, you will find the 2015 Trophy Room:

Best Selling Small Car: BMW i3, 2.213 units. After another close run with the Renault Zoe, the Bimmer hot hatch managed to win once again the Best Selling Small Car title, with their sales growing 59% YoY;

Rookie Of The Year: Volkswagen Golf GTE, 1.500 units. As expected, the german model had a warm welcome in hot hatch land, shooting to #5 in the Final Ranking.

In 2016 the VW GTE relatives (Golf & Passat) will try to dent the front-runners domination, while at the same time luxury SUV's will be on the high. As for sales predictions, i would say that growth will continue, albeit on a more moderate pace, so my guess will be some 40.000 units.

New Kids Edition

Thanks to a new article on RAC Foundation, i can now post a ranking regarding UK's First Half of the Year sales.

An amazing 13.000 plug-ins were sold in the first half of the year in the UK, trouncing the 4.000-something of the same period last year, and is less than a thousand units away from breaking the record result set last year, like, in the whole of 2014!

As a result, the EV Share is now at around 1%, almost double of the 0,56% of last year...

Looking at the models ranking, the top two continue miles ahead of the competition, together own two thirds of the market (49% for Mitsu's SUV, 18% for the Leaf), with the BMW i3 still in Third, but it has been assisting to a sales slowdown, which might have to do with a couple of new models, like the #6 Audi A3 e.Tron and its sporty cousin, the #7 VW Golf GTE, two cars that have everything to succeed in the Old Albion.

Regarding the rest of the ranking, the BMW i8 dropped one position to #5 (Still, is its highest position in the Top 8 markets), to the benefit of the Renault Zoe, now #4, while the Model S also dropped one position to #8.

In this more detailed ranking, a reference for the good performance of the Mercedes models: The S500e plug-in hybrid is #10 with 124 units, the Mercedes B-Class ED is now #15 and looking to reach a Top 10 place until year end, and finally the C350e plug-in hybrid has just landed to register its first 19 units.

UK May 2015 (Draft)

UK Edition

Thanks to an article on Inside EV's (Hat Tip), i can now post a draft ranking of the UK.

The UK EV Market continues to impress, with almost 12.000 sold this year, it's  now the second largest market in the Old Continent, only behind Norway (And not by much, only 1.000 less), the EV Share holds steady above the 1% threshold (1,06%, to be more precise), well above the 0,56% of last year, or the paltry 0,16% recorded two years ago...

This stratospheric growth is mostly due to the continuous success of the Outlander PHEV and Nissan Leaf, but the market is growing even faster than them, with both losing some share points, as new models spread the spectre of new clients for EV's (Audi A3 e-Tron, Golf GTE, Porsche Cayenne Plug-In...) and buyers (Both private owners as fleet managers) across the several segments realize the benefits they can have by buying a brand new plug-in.

Springtime Records - UK Edition

Thanks to a new article on Fleet World (Hat Tip to Mario), i can now post a more accurate ranking regarding UK sales.

An amazing 8.557 plug-ins were sold this year in the UK, with 6.114 of them being sold in March alone, not only it has broken its monthly record by a mile (The previous record was around 2.800 units, scored last September), but it is only the second country in Europe to pass the 5.000 units/month barrier (The Netherlands was the first in December '13), and only the fourth in the World to reach such heights (Besides the aforementioned Netherlands, the others were the USA and China), as consequence of this explosive growth, the EV Share jumped to 1,16%, well above the 0,56% recorded last year, or the paltry 0,16% two years ago...

Oh, and by the way, the UK is currently the largest market for plug-ins in Europe, ahead of France, Netherlands or Norway!

This growth event is mostly due to the arrival of the Outlander PHEV, which has sold an historic 3.180 units last month, and some 4.500 in this First Quarter. And now a couple of facts to understand the importance that the plug-in SUV has in Mitsubishi's general performance: The japanese carmaker sold a total of 5.609 units in the UK last month, and 7.970 YTD, making the Outlander PHEV their most successful product by a long shot...

The Nissan Leaf also did its best performance last month, selling near the four digit area (986 sales), for the first time ever in a single european market.

Regarding the rest of the ranking, the numbers are way smaller than the top two contenders, but the BMW i3 is a bit further ahead of the pack, in #3, with 652 units in the First Quarter, followed by its big brother BMW i8 (The highest position of the bavarian sports car in any major market), and the Renault Zoe.

A final reference for the good performance of the Audi A3 e-Tron, #6 with 234 sales, something that might grow significantly in the next few months.

Going Up

Outlander PHEV dethrones Leaf Edition

Apart from the Leaf and Outlander PHEV numbers, i don't have accurate data for the UK, but the numbers were so high, that i just had to publish something.

Some 14.000 plug-ins were sold last year in the UK, not only it has shattered the previous yearly record to bits (The previous record was around 4.000 units), but it also rose the UK to the fourth largest EV market in Europe, surpassing Germany(!). As consequence of this, the EV Share made an historic jump to 0,56%, miles above the 0,16% recorded in 2013.

Besides the sudden sales surge, the big news in 2014 was the brilliant and somewhat unexpected career of the Mitsu Outlander PHEV, shooting right to Number One in its debut year, with 5.370 units, outselling the perennial leader (#1 since 2011) Nissan Leaf, which, despite doubling sales, couldn't resist the tidal wave made by the plug-in SUV.

This dutch-like performance of the Outlander made the UK the third largest market for Mitsu's SUV, only behind Japan and Holland, while at the same time made the UK's PHEV share double from 22% in 2013 to 47% now.

Looking at the top positions in general, we can see a majority of new models filling up the top spots, while the two resistants from 2013 saw their sales double, which is a good sign for the upcoming months.

Looking for 2015, the top two will continue to run for #1, while the EV market as a whole will continue to grow, although with slower growth rates. I'm predicting some 19.000 units in the end of 2015, what do you think?

UK September 2014 (2nd Update)

Record Edition

Thanks to an article on Inside EV's (Hat Tip), i can now post a more complete and accurate article regarding UK sales.

3.093 plug-ins were sold last month in the UK, not only it has broken its record by a mile (The previous record was around 1.000 units), but it is only the third market in Europe to reach such heights (The others were Norway and the Netherlands), as consequence, the EV Share jumped to 0,42%, well above the 0,16% recorded last year.

The Leaf sold 851 units last month, its best performance ever in any european market, while the Outlander PHEV made a dutch-like performance, selling in the four digits area.

Regarding the rest of the ranking, the BMW i3 had an expected warm welcome, with brits preferring the assurance of Rex to avoid range anxiety, Tesla is already #4, while the Renault Zoe is also selling well.

Behind these newcomers, in #6 we have the Vauxhall Ampera, which is experiencing something of a second youth, with three months to go, it is already outselling its 2013 score (260 units) and it's closing in on its personal best score (455 sales) achieved in 2012. Ironically, the Ampera is living its last moments before crossing the Hades of the Auto Industry...It will be missed, especially in this market.

Who is showing some wrinkles is the Prius Plug-In, it was #2 last year, but for the moment is only #7, with half the sales it had last year.

A promising start for the Nissan e-NV200, already in #8, it looks that Nissan feels at home in this market.

Finally, in #9 we have the expensive Volvo V60 Plug-In and in #10 the BMW i8, a car that has a waiting list that exceeds one year...

I finally got access to second quarter numbers from the UK and despite the abysmal difference between the Leaf and everybody else, this last quarter saw the arrival of the Outlander PHEV, which has sold 542 units in just three months, placing it Second in the Quarter, and #3 YTD.

As if that wasn't enough, in July the Mitsu SUV was the best selling plug-in in the UK, with 399 units, making this the first time since 2011 that a car other than the Leaf wins the monthly Best Seller title.

Finally, the Tesla Model S is still absent from this Top 5 ranking, although not for long, as it is expected to rise to #4 by the end of the next quarter in September.

The Leaf still Rules Britannia. For how long?

BMW i3 Has a Warm Welcome Edition

This is a draft edition of how the first quarter of the year behaved in the UK, with the only real news being the BMW i3 selling like hot cakes and shooting to #2, although still far from the leader Nissan Leaf.

The second quarter ranking should be more interesting, with the arrival of the Outlander PHEV and Tesla Model S surely changing the current status quo.

ps: One of these two dethroned the Leaf from the sales leadership in July...

UK All Time Top 5 (Up to December '13)

The Nissan Leaf is miles away from the competition, being the Best Selling Car ever since it arrived, the Plug-In Prius is surprisingly ahead of the Vauxhall Ampera and the last two places are for Renault, with the Kangoo ZE still being the most common EV from the french manufacturer.

Nissan Leaf feeling at home in the UK

Leaf #1 Edition

After many solicitations asking for this post, i've decided to publish a draft with the current data.
3.739 plug-ins were sold in the United Kingdom, a 26% over last year with the #1 Nissan Leaf carrying the bulk of the sales, with 1.812 units sold, almost three times more(!) than it did last year, you can say that the "Sunderland" factor did its magic here.

The rest of the podium is the same as last year, with #2 for the Prius Plug-In, followed by the Vauxhall Ampera, that keeps its third spot but it's threatened by the Renault Zoe, in #4, and the Volvo V60 Plug-In, in#5 .

Many newcomers at the second half of the ranking, with the BMW i3 being the one to watch for in 2014, probably going for the podium in the in end of '14.

Speaking of the future, Volvo, with the V60 Plug-In, and Mitsubishi, with the Outlander PHEV, are strong candidates at the podium,  just like the aforementioned BMW i3, pressuring both Renault and Toyota, while Nissan will keep on growing without caring on what goes behind it.

All this must push sales to some 5.000 units/year.
