This exact intersection, the Main Street crossing, had 17 crashes, crashes in 2003 and 1983 involved fatalities, from 1975 through 2016
This makes it tied for 2nd of railroad intersections in Mississippi's Harrison County in that time frame, having train collisions according to Federal Railroad Administration data.
Now it has 4 more dead.
12 of those crashes happened from the 1970s through the '90s. Five involved vehicles that were stalled or otherwise stopped on the tracks.
The NTSB does not investigate all collisions involving trains. However, the fact that just two months ago a similar, non-fatal crash occurred at the same rail crossing led the agency to launch an investigation, NTSB board member Robert Sumwalt said.
Now, all trains are stopping at the Main Street crossing before proceeding, because of damage to the northbound crossing bar and safety lights.
The single track is the CSX mainline along the Gulf Coast, passing through densely populated areas of southern Mississippi. Federal Railroad Agency records show 10 trains a day typically use the track, with a maximum speed of 45 mph.
