The majority of mainstream three-row crossovers posted meaningful Canadian sales gains in February 2017, with the class-leading Ford Explorer juping 41% and gains of ore than 30% reported by the Chevrolet Traverse, Dodge Durango, Ford Flex, and Mazda CX-9.

Down a semi-notch in size and price, the two-row Hyundai Santa Fe Sport tumbled 15% and Ford Edge sales slid 21%. Aside from January, when Santa Fe Sport sales dipped below 1000 units for the first time since December 2011, the 1222-unit performance from the Hyundai was its worst performance in the same time period.
For the Ford Edge, attracting only 944 buyers in February represented a 14-month low. |

Among the three-row family crossovers, 2017 is a year of great change.
The new Chevrolet Traverse will arrive at dealers soon. A new Buick Enclave will be unveiled soon.
And Volkswagen's Atlas is undergoing its media drives, with consumer editions set to hit dealers by summer. The Atlas is priced just under $36,000 before fees.

Canadian sales of midsize SUVs and crossovers – a widely varying group described here as including vehicles as disparate as the Hyundai Santa Fe XL, Subaru Outback, and Jeep Wrangler – rose 1% in January 2017.

Mazda CX-9 sales more than doubled in Canada in 2016.
In fact, 2016 was the Mazda CX-9's best year ever.

But the Mazda CX-9 remains an exceptionally low-volume family crossover, selling just once for every six Ford Explorers. We, of course, believe the CX-9 deserves better. But until more Canadians recognize the depth of its merits, key CX-9 rivals are selling far, far more often.  |

2016 was the best year ever for the Toyota Highlander, sales of which jumped 25% to 12,964 units. Among three-row utility vehicles, only the Explorer sold more often.
Hyundai Santa Fe XL sales jumped 22%. The Dodge Durango was up 69%. Even at the end of their first-gen tenure, Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse sales were on the rise. Dying in the near future, Ford Flex sales rose to a four-year high.
