Large Luxury SUV Sales In America - February 2017

Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class sales doubled to 2467 units in February 2017, one year after sales plunged during the transition from GL to updated GLS. The GLS was America's large luxury SUV chart topper in February 2017, finishing the 28 days with one more sale than Cadillac produced with its Escalade lineup.

Year-over-year, Escalade sales dropped 15% in February and are down 5% so far this year. The Lexus LX570 has likewise fallen to a slightly slower sales pace than it managed one year ago. Lincoln Navigator sales continue to decline, albeit marginally, as the company prepares to reveal a new model in New York next month.

But across the spectrum, the biggest and most costly luxury SUVs have seen their sales rise 16% so far this year. 

Largely, the Mercedes-Benz GLS is deserving of credit, but the Toyota Land Cruiser, Land Rover Range Rover, and Infiniti QX50 are to be thanked, as well. Bentley has also added 123 sales from the Bentayga, which wasn't on sale at this stage of 2016.

Full-size luxury SUV sales jumped 20% in January 2017 thanks to continued growth from the Cadillac Escalade and particularly successful starts to 2017 for the Infiniti QX80, Land Rover Range Rover, and Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class.

For the QX80, it was the best Q1 performance in the nameplate's history. Range Rover sales, after averaging fewer than 1200 units in the Januarys of the last half-decade, jumped to 1833 units last month. The Mercedes-Benz GLS, meanwhile, reported its tenth consecutive year-over-year improvement.

For the Escalade, the joint 10% improvement across the regular-wheelbase and ESV long-wheelbase variants translated to 2197 total sales. 

General Motors sold 18,870 full-size SUVs in January 2017, 10% of the automaker's total U.S. volume. Better than one out of every five Cadillacs sold in January was an Escalade.

U.S. sales of the regular-wheelbase Cadillac Escalade increased in 2016 to the highest level seen since 2008. The long-wheelbase Escalade ESV enjoyed a boost to the highest level since 2007.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, the Toyota Land Cruiser's U.S. sales volume reached an eight-year high.

Across the full-size luxury SUV segment, sales grew 10% in 2016, year-over-year. Credit isn't only owed to the high-volume Cadillac and low-volume Toyota.

2016 was the best year ever for the Infiniti QX80. The Toyota Land Cruiser's Lexus LX570 sibling climbed to an eight-year high. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class grew its U.S. sales for a seventh consecutive year. The Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, formerly known as the GL, reached an all-time high.

Hugely profitable when not selling at record levels, these flagship luxury SUVs are presumably far more lucrative now that sales are shooting through the roof.

Cadillac's Escalade sales surge continued in the United States in November 2016, with total Escalade and Escalade ESV sales jumping 17%, year-over-year, to 3492 units. 

Mercedes-Benz's biggest SUV, the GLS-Class, likewise posted improved November volume. Infiniti QX80 sales grew by a single unit. Lexus also reported a year-over-year increase with the LX570, its sixth consecutive and twelfth in the last thirteen months.

At the upper end of the scale, Land Rover Range Rover sales tumbled 22% in November, the third consecutive decrease for Land Rover's flagship. After jumping out to a hot start with pent-up demand for a 223-unit result in August, the Bentley Bentayga has averaged a more realistic 140 monthly sales ever since.  

Since its late summer launch, 47% of Bentley's U.S. volume has been produced by the Bentayga.

3441 total Escalades were sold in the United States in October: 1453 long-wheelbase Escalade ESVs and 1988 regular-wheelbase Escalades. October was the ninth consecutive month of four-digit figures from the ESV, which outsells the whole Lincoln Navigator range – long and short-wheelbase iterations — by more than 300 units per month.

The October 2016 sales gains reported by the Escalade, Lexus LX570, Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, and Toyota Land Cruiser were essentially counteracted by sharp losses from the Land Rover Range Rover, the aforementioned Lincoln Navigator, and the Mercedes-Benz G-Class.
