For the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Chicago to Aurora, Illinois line, the Chicago Burlington and Quincy 5632 was painted gold for fan rides, and reached speeds of 90 mph
Chicago Burlington and Quincy 4-8-4 5632 blasts under the Santa Fe at Bucklin, Missouri, November 1, 1964.
The 5632 was on a roundtrip excursion between Kansas City, Kansas, and Bevier, Missouri. The steamer was painted gold in honor of Kansas City Union Terminal’s 50th Anniversary.
The CB and Q started using 5632 on fan trips when she was hauled out of retirement for a November 2, 1958 re-enactment of the run of the Aristocrat from Chicago to Galesburg.
Occasionally, the CB and Q ran doubleheaders. During one trip the 6315 had a mishap where she lost both of her eccentric rods. 5632 saved the day by pushing the crippled 6315 to Galesburg while towing the 18-car train.
By 1961 she needed a major overhaul. The superheater coils were reworked, the firebox was rebricked, the boiler was relagged, 97 staybolts were replaced, and she received a new paint job. All of this was done at the Galesburg Shops.
In 1964 5632 was painted with temporary (water-based) gold paint to help commemorate the 100th anniversary of the CB and Q's suburban service.
Chicago - Aurora runs were made on May 20, 1964 (a mid-week trip - on the actual day) and on May 23rd. The May 23rd trip consisted of a record number of passengers (about 3500) for a CB and Q fan trip (22 coaches were used).
By June, 5632 was once again painted black. However, 5632 was again painted gold to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the opening of Kansas City Union Station with a trip to St. Joseph on October 31, 1964 and a trip to Bevier, Missouri on November 1.
The trip on November 1, 1964 proved to be 5632's final (CB and Q excursion) trip for when she returned to Galesburg, she was stored unserviceable with no further extension on flue removal. In 1965, a class 3 overhaul was authorized by retiring president, Harry C. Murphy. The CB and Q shop forces at West Burlington had removed the flues and fire brick. However, the CB and Q was unable to recruit the 14 men that were required to put 5632 back into service and in 1966, new president Louis W. Menk ordered the repairs to be stopped.
after storage and neglect, it was sold for scrap to pay the storage fees

it has a wheel and its an engine and its the largest of it's kind in the world.... the Laxey Wheel
The triskelion on the front of the wheel is backwards. This happened by accident when transferring the image onto the wall; they forgot to reverse it, so, it's actually a mirror image of the symbol of Mann.
The heraldic device of the triskele has been associated with the Isle of Man for centuries. In 1405, Henry IV, King of England gave the Isle of Man to John Stanley. The latter gave Henry two peregrine falcons, and was to provide the same to every future English king on his coronation.
The symbol is closely associated with Sicily, and is attested there as early as the 7th century BC. In 1250, the Holy Roman Emperor died after having ruled Sicily for 52 years. Four years later, the papal legate invested the Sicilian kingship in the young son of King Henry III, of England and for about ten years afterwards Edmund was styled "King of Sicily".
The island was ruled by King Alexander Of Scotland, whose wife was King Henry III daughter, and this familial connection between the English and Scottish royal families could account for the introduction of the triskeles as a symbol of the Isle of Man.
Or, the appearance of the 'triskele' on coins of the tenth century Norse King, Anlaf Cuaran, whose dominion included Dublin and the Isle of Man; and it is probable that the later Manx Kings were a branch of the same dynasty. All the early examples of the Manx 'Legs' show them as if running sunwise (i.e. clockwise) and to that extent the heraldic symbol of the Island still retained an essential feature of the ancient pagan sun-symbol.
Why did I tell you all of that instead of posting about cars? I've always wanted to know about that 3 legged thing, and so, as I was learning about the Isle of Man TT, this kept coming up.
It was built in 1854 to pump water from the Great Laxey Mines, which also has a pair of steam locomotives, very small ones, named Ant and Bee
A water-powered wheel was used because the Isle of Man does not have a supply of coal for a steam-powered pump.
250 imperial gallons of water a minute from the Laxey mines some 200 yards away and 1,500 feet below ground
The mine employed over 600 miners at its peak, producing lead, copper, silver and zinc, until it closed in 1929. In 1965 the Manx Government bought the wheel and site. The wheel was restored; in 1989,
The head of the government is the Queen of England, but the island is like Bermuda, it's an internally self-governing dependent territory of the Crown which is not part of the United Kingdom, even though it's located off the coast of England.
The island takes a holiday for the TT Senior Race Day... and that... THAT is cool. Tell me of any other country taking a holiday for a vehicle race!

When Union Pacific began looking for ways to reuse its obsolete steam locomotives, the company began experimenting with the iron horses.
The Union Pacific 844 is the last steam engine the American Locomotive Company’s (Alco) factory built in December 1944, and it represented the epitome of steam locomotive technology.
The result of seven years of development focused heavily on efficiency and speed to combat the new diesel-electric locomotives that were on the rise with their unrelenting fuel economy and reduced downtime.
The bed of the firebox and boiler were cast with the chassis as one piece instead of building the locomotive on a riveted frame—much like the difference between a stiff supercar monocoque and a floppy pickup ladder frame. This not only strengthened the 844 as a whole but also reduced its weight significantly, because portions of the drive cylinders and valves, various air channels for the firebox, and the cab floor were integral to the chassis.
This was built to hustle passengers all throughout the Midwest, anywhere from Chicago to Los Angeles, at speeds up to 110 mph. The engine and tender of the 844 weigh almost 1-million pounds (454 tons) along with the added weight of the passenger cars behind it.
By 1960 the diesel-electrics had taken over the passenger routes, and UP attempted to use the 844’s massive boiler as an experimental snow-melter, redirecting steam to jets in front of the locomotive to blast and melt snow off the tracks.

Tasik Madu on the island of Java
Tasik Madu was (and is) the flagship mill of the Yogya/Solo area, being built in grand style for the then Sunan (Sultan) of Solo. Steam survives in quantity here for yard work and the tourist operation but the field lines and the main line connection are long gone.

Bridges... the fastest way to make them used to be just dropping a log across a cleft. This is the only untrussed log bridge I've ever seen with a train on it, made of just two logs.
the Minnetonka was the Northern Pacific Railroad's Locomotive No. 1.
Built in 1870, it was first used in northern Minnesota, then brought to the the Olympic peninsula for use in logging.
Photo taken in the mid 1880's
The bridge is just two long logs spanning the river with sufficient structural strength to support the track, locomotive and railcars full of big logs.
http://www.blackdiamondnow.net/black-diamond-now/2016/10/the-minnetonka-circa-1885.html
David just sent me a link to the Van Atta Brothers logging museum and website... cool stuff!
No rail cars, just loooong logs between bogeys
hard rubber tires, probably no seat cushion for the tractor operator and passengers either
Above, a Shay type locomotive
But the angle on the drive shaft in the above photo, that's a bit unusual
D8 Caterpillar dozers used an arch to get one end of a log off the ground, reducing the drag from the log, and below is something I've never seen before, a trailer arch. I'm surprised, because I grew up in the logging areas of Northern Michigan, and thought I'd seen most everything about logging
