quite bizzare, but true, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway has some cool things that were donated, but never went into its museum, and they are finally tired of storing them, so it's auction time in 5 weeks

No, they don't seem to have any one with the motivation to take a single decent photo, even with a cell phone... but they are going to get these sold to go to a good home... so, there's that.

One old steam pumper, and a real 1826 praire schooner. The Consetoga wagon was prevalent in the east for heavy hailing, but the schooner was the choice of pioneers in the west for it's light weight when winching up mountains and crossing rivers... it was nearly a boat on wheels, an they sometimes had to float.

Digging a bit I find that the reason these are coming out of deep long term storage and getting sold is that the museum wants to double in size http://www.indyracingmuseum.org/news/  now that it has a new head honcho exec director who was realized the 1970s era museum that hasn't been ungraded in decades, and has 300 cars that can't get displayed because the museum is too small.

“The lighting, the technology, it’s vintage 1976,” said Betsy Smith, who is in her second year heading the nonprofit foundation that operates the museum. “We’re a racing museum, but nothing in here moves. Except the trophy.”

She nodded toward the Borg-Warner Trophy, the 5-foot tall Indy 500 winner’s trophy, which was rotating slowly on a lazy Susan. “I’d like to get some interactive technology in here and some video so that visitors could really experience racing,” she said.

Now, about 60 cars (1/5th of all their inventory) are displayed in the museum’s 30,000 square feet. The foundation owns 300 additional cars that for lack of space gather dust in the museum’s basement. “You never want to display your entire collection all at once,” Smith said, “but (with the expansion) we could display maybe 150 and rotate them more often.”

Instead of visitors simply inspecting parked cars, she wants to do a better job of telling the stories of the cars, possibly with video tablets placed around the vehicles that show the race cars actually racing or by other high-tech methods. “Like a hologram of Donald Davidson that you could ask questions to,” Smith said. Davidson is the Speedway’s encyclopedic historian who is known for having the most minute detail at his fingertips.

Visitors come from all over the world to see the Speedway’s museum, but total attendance, 127,000 last year, is 1/3rd the Indy Museum of Art and 1/10th of The Children’s Museum (about 1.2 million a year).

Doubling the size of the Speedway museum is a tall order of about $100 million, but unlike other museums, it has no endowment fund, no corporate sponsorship and until recently no members. It has relied on the Hulman-George family, which owns the track and allows the museum to stay in its building rent-free, and on gate receipts that amount to about $1 million a year.

Until now, the museum has never in its history tried to raise any money.  Seriously, how does it think it's representing 100 years of innovation in racing with 60 cars? No videos, no interaction, and nothing upgraded from the 70s? Hell, I've done a better job with this blog of telling Indy 500 history!

These items are being sold as non-collection assets unrelated to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Foundation's mission because they do not relate to racing or automobiles in any way, and were never intended to be displayed in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum.

"The spectacular items in this one-of-a-kind auction tell important stories about life in America in the days of our grandparents and great grandparents, and deserve to be displayed and used in an appropriate setting. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum was never intended to be that setting and it is time they find a home where they can be enjoyed as treasured examples of American life of 75 to 100 years ago, or more" said Betsy Smith, executive director of the nonprofit Indianapolis Motor Speedway Foundation that operates the museum.

he bought it and kept it for 32 years, then the Volare factory kit car was auctioned for $11,000

This Volare features the Street Kit Car Package and is one of 247 built by Plymouth.

Highly optioned, it is equipped with a 360ci 4V engine with automatic transmission. It features a two-tone paint package, power disc brakes, air conditioning and power steering.

It's had the same owner - a Mopar Club Member and enthusiast - since 1985. It sold new in Wisconsin but has been a meticulously maintained, garage-kept and rust-free Arizona car since 1985. He did get his picture taken with it and Richard Petty.

the four “hood pins” screwed to the Kit Car’s hood are totally bogus, the one-piece “hood pin” unit, was made to look complete with a vinyl-coated lanyard.

those wonderful people at Van Der Brink have scored another gold mine collection of cars (How the hell do they do that?) this time, a trucking company owner is auctioning off 700 cars (250 are Studes) he recently realized he will never get to restoring, nor making a museum

Hackenberger’s former trucking company used to deliver goods around the country and when the man himself was at the wheel, he’d always keep an eye open for interesting cars that he could haul back home with him.

Going to auction are a 23 window VW Bus, 2 BMW Isetta, a Crosley, and a Nash Metropolitan, a DeLorean, several Citroens including a DS, a Borgward, a Tatra, and a Darrin. Muscle cars include a ’65 Ford Mustang, a ’67 Plymouth Barracuda and a ’66 Dodge Charger. Tractors, motorcycles, etc are among the collection.

1947 Indian, 1949 Harley, tractors from IH to John Deere, 8 & 6 door Checker limos, Divco Milk Trucks, early Hondas, Jaguars, Porsche, Henry J’s, Desoto, Plymouth, and even COE Trucks

Hackenberg and VanDerBrink Auctions will be hosting the sale over the weekend of July 15 and 16, including preview event on July 14, which will be attended by the owner himself. All vehicles on offer will be sold at no reserve, increasing the odds of scoring a project car at a bargain price.

Collector of Ariel liquidates 30 unrestored motorcycles at auction this year

After many years of collecting German WW2 machinery including Kettenkrads he returned to his first love and built up this collection of Ariels. “I searched out those bikes that were going to be broken up for scrap and rebuilt them. My idea was to save them for posterity.” Now the time has come to pass them on to others.

The Duemila Route (2000 Wheels) collection, once the pride of Italian private security magnate Luigi Compiano, was seized by Italy and sent to auction in forfeit of unpaid taxes. The largest single automotive collection ever offered for auction in Europe

The collection was the property of Italian Luigi Compiano and was confiscated by the Italian Government to recoup around €14 million owed in back taxes.

Compiano was quite the Porsche fan – he had more than 70 examples – as well as over 60 Jaguars, nearly 50 Ferraris, and dozens of Lancias, Alfa Romeos, and Maseratis.

430 cars, 150 motorcycles, 60 boats and racing hydrofoils, 117 bicycles, bobsleds,

Steven Tyler, has a Hennessey Venom Spyder, and is auctioning it for charity this Friday (Jan 20th 2016)

The 1,451-horsepower twin-turbo V8 sold for 1.3 million USD new, and is one of only 12 to Venom to exist, but the only convertible

Janie's Fund aims "to bring hope and healing for many of our country's most vulnerable girls who have suffered the trauma of abuse and neglect."

When “Janie’s Got a Gun” – which touched on the theme of child abuse – was released in 1989, Tyler was overwhelmed and inspired by the thousands of letters he received from his fans – fans who had experienced neglect and abuse themselves. It prompted him to launch Janie’s Fund – a program to support girls who have been abused and neglected, giving them the resources they need to heal and, as Tyler puts it, “the tools they need to get on in this crazy world that we’ve got.”

As bidding soared past a half-million dollars, the rock-and-roll legend took the microphone to add a few extra perks to the bid package: a weeklong stay at his mansion in Maui and a guitar signed by every member of the Aerosmith band. The crowd roared in excitement as the bidding war escalated.

probably the best collection of muscle cars and spare parts we are going to hear of, the Don Fezell collection

On April 13, 2012 during the Four-Wide Nationals at the zMAX Dragway, Don became the first racer ever to run an NHRA Stocker in the 8s, posting an 8.954 ET at 153.88 MPH in his 2008, 5.4-liter AA/S Cobra Jet Mustang.

A racer – both on and off dragstrips – since the mid-Fifties, Fezell had a healthy first-hand appreciation for factory-built drag cars of the Sixties after losing to the likes of Grumpy Jenkins. So in 1975 when he started his car collection, he decided to focus on some of the best high-performance machines Detroit built.

Four Z11s of the 57 ever made, are in Fezell’s collection, plus three factory Cobra Jet lightweight Mustangs, a couple lightweight Mopars, a Ford Thunderbolt, and a Super Duty Pontiac.

And then there’s the muscle cars – a Hemi ‘Cuda, an R-code Fairlane 500, and a Camaro RS/SS convertible among them.

1985 VW Beetle, bought but never used. Sold at Sotheby's aution for $21,000

The Jubilee Edition Beetle, or 50 Jahre Käfer, celebrated the model’s 50th anniversary in 1985. Also a Germany-only model, it featured Zinkgrau (Pewter) Metallic paintwork, green tinted glass, chrome bumpers and trim, a silver “50 years” badge on the left front quarter and engine lid, twin white side stripes, 4.5Jx15 sports wheels with 165SR15 tyres, a Braunschweig Brunswick radio, padded dashboard, cloth upholstery with grey and red stripes, head restraints in cloth and leatherette, a four-spoke sports steering wheel, grey headlining, grey carpet on the sills and rear luggage compartment, and a heated rear window. Just 3,150 were built.

Without question, that offered here must be the most original Jubilee Edition in existence. Showing just 25 kilometres, it still wears its shipboard transport wax coating and wrapped bumpers. The exhaust is still wax-sealed to avoid any corrosion. Purchased in 1985 by its first owner, it was rolled off of the truck and immediately put away for nearly three decades. It has all its original equipment and features, including the Braunschweig Brunswick radio, sports steering wheel, and heated rear window. The car has never been started since arriving in Europe, though the fan belt has been manually turned to keep the pistons from seizing. Furthermore, the car has only been pushed around when necessary, and as the consignor notes, neither he nor the original owner have ever sat in the car. The 25 kilometres showing on the odometer were accumulated during testing after it left the assembly line in Mexico.
