Portugal February 2017

Image result for Renault Zoe portugal

Rise up, Renault!

EV Sales continue on the rise in Portugal, with sales in 2017 up 33% YoY to 339 units, and the Plug-in Share finally reaching the 1% threshold, an important step, especially considering that growth is coming from BEV's (Up 154% to 206 units), more than compensating the current PHEV drop (-24% YoY, to 133 units).

At this pace, we expect 2017 to end at some 2.500-3.000 registrations by year end, with the EV Share ending firmly north of the 1% barrier.

After years dragging their feet when it comes to EV's, Renault, possibly Portugal's most popular car brand, has finally risen to the occasion and by the time of the Zoe ZE 40 launch, decided to actively market its electric hatchback, promoting it in mass media and forcing encouraging their dealerships to sell the car, with immediate results, for the first time ever, the Renault Zoe is head and shoulders in front of the pack, with almost a third (31%) of the market, with the February performance (72 units) representing its best result ever.

The Second Place is in the hands wheels of its Alliance cousin, with the Nissan Leaf selling in enough volume (22 units last month) to be the runner-up, a significant feat for ageing nameplate, with Nissan now harnessing the fruits for spreading the word over the years, now making the Leaf synonymous with EV in Portugal.

Another popular plug-in here is the BMW i3, Third this year with 27 units, with the interesting factoid that all but one unit are 100% electric, possibly due to the 33 kWh effect...The longer range also helps the German hatchback to spread outside Lisbon and Porto metro areas, big time magnets for the BMW model.

Elsewhere, the best selling PHEV's are only Fourth, with the Outlander PHEV and BMW 225xe Active Tourer tied in #4, with 20 units, with the BMW model promising to be a strong contender for the category Best Seller title.

Finally, the VW Passat GTE registered a personal best of 11 registrations last month, pulling it to #6. Now imagine how high this model could be if the local importer actually supported their plugins and this model in particular...

In the manufacturers ranking, Renault is in the lead for the first time in years, with 31% share, followed by last year winner BMW (19%) and runner-up Nissan (17%).

Plug-Ins Versus Regular Hybrids

If we combine February regular hybrid sales with plug-ins, there is a small revolution at the top, with the usual two (Auris & Yaris) removed from the top two positions by their C-HR sibling, a runaway success everywhere, followed by the all-electric Renault Zoe, the only plug-in in this Top 5.

Portugal December 2016

Image result for Nissan Leaf no Porto

Nissan Leaf is the 2016 Best Seller

EV Sales continue on the rise in Portugal, with sales in 2016 up 50% YoY to 1.970 units, with the EV Share ending at a record 0.95%, an important step above the 0.73% of 2015, with the total fleet of plug-ins now surpassing the 4.200 units.

For 2017, some 3.000 registrations are expected by year end, with the EV Share finally crossing north of the 1% barrier.

After a five year drought, the Nissan Leaf, by far Portugal's most popular EV (Over 700 units fleet) was crowned again with the Best Seller title, with 328 units (New all time record), after winning the title in 2010 and 2011. To have a notion of the leap made since then, the total number of registrations made in 2011 was 212 units, which is less than last month (233) alone...

After a close race between them, the remaining podium positions went for the Mercedes C350e (289 units), the new runner-up, earning the first Silver Medal for the Mercedes model anywhere in the World, with the Bronze medalist being the Outlander PHEV, the 2015 Best Seller, with 285 units, that despite losing the leadership, it actually increased YoY sales by 24% (And representing 60% of all Outlander sales).

The BMW i3 benefited from a strong year end to post a record result, with 218 units, ending in #4, followed by the #5 V60 Plug-In, that after five years on the market, finally took off in Portugal, by registering 175 units, up four-fold, while representing 24% of all sales of the Volvo wagon. After years with this sales gem hidden somewhere, it seems the local Volvo importer finally discovered it...Well, better late than never, right?

The same can't be said about Renault, while the French brand is easily the Best Selling automotive brand in Portugal and having the European Best Selling EV in their lineup, one would think that the Renault Zoe would lead the EV movement here, right?

Wrong...In a case where 2+2=1, the Renault Zoe ended the year in Sixth, with 170 units, a personal best, but so far it has failed to reach a podium position since its introduction in 2013, a performance that pales when comparing with its European performance...Let's hope 2017 and the new ZE40 version spike sales up, but for that to happen we also need the local network of Renault dealerships to finally wake up to EV's and change the mindset of their sales force to actively sell their Zero-emission vehicles, instead of trying to detour potential customers to the Clio's they are running from.

Elsewhere, the #7 BMW 330e success (80 units and Rookie of the Year), underlines the growing importance of the company car segment (Mercedes C350e, Volvo V60...) in this market, thanks to the VAT benefits that companies enjoy. The Kia Soul EV finally took of in Portugal, hitting #11 and 31 units, this being another case of the local importer waking up late to EV's, let's hope sister brand Hyundai doesn't take also two years to realize the sales gem they have on the Hyundai Ioniq Electric...But by pricing the regular HEV Ioniq at Eur 33.056 (!), when in neighboring Spain the same model costs only Eur 19.600, it sure seems that way. Oh well, that will only make Portuguese buyers cross the border and buy in Spain...To the benefit of the Spanish Hyundai importer.

Finally, the Mercedes GLC350e landed with a bang in December, registering 10 units, so Mercedes might have here another podium contender for 2017.

In the manufacturers ranking, after a close race, BMW took the trophy for the first time, with 19% share, followed closely by Nissan (19%) and Mercedes (17%).

The BEV/PHEV breakdown shows plug-in hybrids winning the majority for the first time, with 53% share, 15% above the result of 2015 and a whole 44% above the share they had in 2013, when only 9% of the plug-in market was PHEV.

VAT benefits for companies, started in 2015, has helped to expand the plug-in market, let's just hope they do not fall in the Dutch and Belgian exaggerations, where some 80% of plug-ins are PHEV's and most of them are company cars where many end users just drive them as regular hybrids...

If we combine regular hybrid 2016 sales with plug-ins, the usual two (Auris & Yaris) are in front, followed by the diesel HEV Mercedes C300h (A testimony for diesel still being popular here), with 410 units, while the all-electric Nissan Leaf ended the year not far behind (328) ,the PHEV version of the Merc C-Class, the C350e (289), and the Outlander PHEV (285) rounding up the top positions.

In fact, we would have to go to the Eighth spot to find another HEV, with the Toyota C-HR registering 190 units in just two months (Will this be the 2017 HEV Best Seller?), thus becoming the Fourth Best Selling HEV in Portugal, proving also that only Toyota and Mercedes actively market Hybrids here.

Who said the Leaf wasn't fit for taxi duty?

Nissan Leaf back at #1

EV Sales continue on fire, with sales up 96% to 229 units, with the EV Share now at a record 0.87%, with YTD sales counting 1.382 units, already beating last year record of 1.305 units, AND with an extra three months to go, we could witness this market reach 2.000 units in one year, for now the total fleet of plug-ins is close to 4.000 units.

With four five six leadership changes this year and three different models passing by the leadership, this is turning out to be one of the most entertaining rankings to look at, with September being no exception, due to a record month from the Nissan Leaf (53 units, stock selloff?), Portugal's favorite EV (240 units this year, new yearly record, in a total of almost 700 stock) returned to the leadership, displacing the Mercedes C350e (18 units) back to #2, with the Bronze medalist Outlander PHEV also off to a good result (36 units, best score since January, representing 80% of all Outlander sales), the podium places are still open to discussion.

The BMW i3 also had a brilliant result, with 27 units, all of them being BEV's, while the BMW 330e has beaten (Again) its personal best, registering 19 units, while the V60 Plug-In registered 16 units, representing 38% of all sales of the Volvo wagon.

In the manufacturers ranking, there's also a close race, with Nissan (19%, up 1%) once again rising to the leadership, followed closely by BMW (18%) and Mercedes (17%).

If we combine regular hybrid sales with plug-ins, the usual two (Auris & Yaris) are in front, followed by the all-electric Nissan Leaf and the Outlander PHEV.

An interesting quirk of this market is the good acceptance of the Mercedes C300h diesel-hybrid, ending the month in Fifth.

Portugal August 2016

Image result for Mercedes C350e Portugal
Expensive (51k  €) and with a small electric range (31 kms NEDC), this Merc is one of the least
interesting PHEV's on the market, but fleet owners  in Portugal love them. for the wrong reasons

Mercedes C350e #1

EV Sales continue on a healthy pace, despite August being a slow selling month (Locals flock to the Algarve beaches), sales were up, to 108 units, keeping the EV Share above 0.7%.

With four five leadership changes this year and three different models passing by the leadership, this is turning out to be one of the most entertaining rankings to look at, with August being no exception, due to a sales slump from the Nissan Leaf (8 units, worst result of the year), the fleet-favorite Mercedes C350e (18 units) rose to #1, with the Bronze medalist Outlander PHEV also off to vacations (9 units, worst result in 2016), the Merc won a precious advantage over its two direct competitors.

Besides Mercedes, there was another German automaker with reasons to be happy, the BMW i3 tied with the Merc C350e in the August Best Seller trophy, with 18 units, while the BMW 330e has beaten its personal best, registering 12 units and climbing to #7 in the YTD ranking. Were not the Bavarian sedan production constrained and it would probably outsell its Mercedes arch rival...

In the manufacturers ranking, there's also a close race, with Mercedes (18%) rising to the leadership, but Nissan (18%, down 1%) is still dangerously close, while the Third placed Mitsubishi (14%, down 2%) has BMW (13%) closing in.

Portugal June 2016

"Oldtimer? Who? Me?!? Finished what?!?! I'll show you who's old and finished..."
 - This seems to be the Fado of the Nissan Leaf in Portugal

Leaf Returns to #1

EV Sales continue growing, with 167 registrations last month, a 27% increase YoY, with the EV Share down slightly to 0.74%.

With four leadership changes this year and three different models passing by the leadership, this is turning out to be one of the most entertaining rankings to look at, with June being no exception, due to a sales slump from the Outlander PHEV (14 units, worst result of the year), the all-electric Nissan Leaf went back to #1, with the Mercedes C350e also taking the chance to overcome the Japanese SUV, thanks to a record 41 deliveries in June, displacing the Mitsubishi to #3, its worst placement in over a year.

Besides the Merc, there were two additional models breaking their own personal records, the newcomer BMW 330e had its first real sales month, delivering 10 units and shooting 16 positions to #10, while the Kia Soul EV registered four units, its best result ever since it landed in 2014, does this mean that the local Kia importer is finally serious about distributing the model?

In the manufacturers ranking, there's also a close race, with Nissan (19%) still in the leadership, but Mercedes (18%, up 1%) is breathing in the Japanese brand neck, having just surpassed Mitsubishi (16%, down 2%) in the race for Second Place.

If we combine regular hybrid sales with plug-ins, the customary two (Auris & Yaris) are in front, followed by the plug-in hybrid version of the Mercedes C-Class (C350e), two units ahead of the regular diesel-hybrid version of the same car (C300h), an important sign that buyers are preferring plug-ins in this diesel-addicted market

Outlander PHEV returns to the Leadership

EV Sales continue with a fast pace, with 140 registrations last month, a 51% increase YoY, with the EV Share down slightly to 0.75%.

The all-electric Nissan Leaf just couldn't resist to the might of the Mitsu Outlander PHEV, with this SUV removing the japanese hatch fron the leadership, while the Mercedes C350e kept just enough pace to the Bronze Medal.

A significant score was made by the Renault Zoe, with 29 units,  its best result this year.

In the manufacturers ranking, Nissan (19%, down 2%) stayed a float,  with Mercedes in Third (17%), and Mitsubishi (18%, up 1%) is a close Second.

Portugal April 2016

Leaf Confirms Leadership

EV Sales continue with a fast pace, with 123 registrations last month, a 86% increase YoY, with the EV Share steady at 0.77%. Year-to-date sales are now at 572 units, up 136%.

The all-electric Nissan Leaf held the leadership, with 25 registrations in April, while the Mitsu Outlander PHEV surpassed the Mercedes C350e and is the new Second Place.

A significant jump was made by the Renault Zoe, up three positions to #6, closer to the Fourth Position claimed last year.

Good month for the LCV segment, with both the Renault Kangoo ZE and Nissan e-NV200/Evalia registering 5 units, a year best, while the Citröen Berlingo EV had its first delivery of the year.

In the manufacturers ranking, Nissan (21%) managed to distance itself from Mercedes (19%), while Mitsubishi (17%) is a close Third.

Plug-Ins Versus Regular Hybrids

PlModel April 2016

3Mercedes C300 Hybrid32

If we combine regular hybrid sales with plug-ins, the two Toyota Best Sellers, the Auris Hybrid (#1) and the Yaris Hybrid (#2), continue to rule the ranking, with this month the Mercedes C300 diesel hybrid overcoming the Nissan Leaf, in the race for the Third Spot.

In Fifth we have another plug-in, the Renault Zoe, two units ahead of the Sixth Place, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

Portugal March 2016

Nissan Leaf Back To #1

EV Sales continue with a fast pace, with 188 registrations last month, a 111% increase YoY, placing the EV Share at 0.77%, with BEV's reversing in March the most recent supremacy of plug-in hybrids.

This change is visible in the ranking, with all-electric models climbing positions, most notably the Nissan Leaf, that jumped from Third to the First position, thanks to a record 48 units performance, this is the first time in eight months that the japanese hatch leads the YTD ranking, a curious fact on the Leaf, is that despite being the most common plug-in model in this market, 2011 marked the last time it won the Best Seller trophy...Will 2016 finally be the year that consecrates Nissan's hatch as Best-Selling EV?

Other all-electric vehicle to climb is the Renault Zoe, now in #9, but still far from the Fourth Position claimed last year, while the almost all-electric BMW i3 managed to climb one position to Fourth, with the mix between versions of the german hot-hatch is now favorable to the pure-electric version, something that didn't happened in previous years.

With springtime coming, the Renault Twizy reappeared in the ranking, ready to serve rentals in some tourist-friendly areas.

There is a newcomer, the VW Passat GTE landed with its first two registrations, looking to replicate the success that Mercedes is experiencing with its C350e in the market.

In the manufacturers ranking, the race is even closer than in the models, with Nissan and Mercedes tied in First Place, both with 92 units, while Mitsubishi is not that far, only 12 units behind, so this is currently one of the most entertaining markets to watch.

If we combine regular hybrid sales with plug-ins, the two Toyota Best Sellers, the Auris Hybrid (#1) and the smaller brother Yaris Hybrid (#2), continue to rule the ranking, but this month the Nissan Leaf managed to overcome the Mercedes C300 diesel hybrid, in the race for the Third Spot.

In Fifth we have another plug-in, the BMW i3, only one unit behind the Mercedes, so with exception of the top two (For now...), it seems that plug-ins are overcoming regular hybrids in Portugal too.
