Volvo XC90 wins Models, BMW the Manufacturers title


Finland registered 149 units in December, the second best result ever, behind the 161 of last February, tripling sales YoY, with the EV Share up again to a record 1.2%, doubling the result achieved in 2015.

Looking at the models ranking, the Volvo XC90 T8 was the undisputed leader in 2016, with 266 units, 100 more than the Second Placed VW Passat GTE.

The BMW 330e secured the last place of the podium, leaving its X5 PHEV relative in Fourth.

An interesting proof of the dynamics of the market, none of the current Top 4 models was in the Top 10 in 2015, in fact, last year leader, the Tesla Model S, ended 2016 in Fifth with 85 units, a 42% sales drop, that the Model X (#14, with 36 units) couldn't fill in completely.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, BMW (23%, up 1%) succeeded to Tesla, becoming the Best Selling in Finland for the first time, while Volvo (20%, down 2%) ended in Second. In Third, we have Volkswagen (16%, up 2%).

In the PHEV/BEV breakdown, the plug-in hybrid euro-trend is visible here, if in 2015 all-electric vehicles reached 37% share, this year they lost a lot of ground, ending the year with only 17% share, the worst result ever.

Bimmer Fest Edition

As of lately, Finland has become one of my favorite markets to report, because news are always good here, October confirmed that trend, with a total of 135 EV's were sold in Finland, up 155% YoY, with the EV Share up again to a record 1,1%.

Looking at the models ranking, the Volvo XC90 T8 is untouchable in the leadership, with 230 units, 19 of them last month.

The Second Placed VW Passat GTE is secure in its place, but the last place of the podium is still pretty much open to discussion between two BMW's, with the 330e (13 sales last month) surpassing its X5 relative (8 units), with only one unit separating them, it looks this will be a open race until the end .

The Audi Q7 e-Tron continues to deliver impressive numbers, having registered 17 units last month and jumping to #9 in the YTD chart, making it a serious contender for the 2017 title.

Underlining a positive month for BMW is the performance of its 740e flagship, that registered 6 units last month and now has only four units separating it from the class leader, the Mercedes S500e.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, BMW (22%, up 1%) is the new Top Dog, if only by eight units (257 vs 249), displacing Volvo (22%) to Second. In Third, we have Volkswagen (14%, down 1%), that is watching the Fourth Placed Mercedes (11%) approaching.

Cool Kids Edition II

In September a total of 146 EV's were sold in Finland, up 109% YoY, with the EV Share firmly north of 1%.

Looking at the models ranking, the Volvo XC90 T8 is untouchable in the leadership, with 211 units, just like the remaining top positions.  

In the #9 we have the first change, with the BMW 225xe Active Tourer rising one position to #9, just like the VW Golf GTE, up one place to #10.

There are two new Kids making waves in the market, the Audi Q7 e-Tron registered 20 units in September, being the Best Seller last month, while the Tesla Model X registered 14 units, looking for a Top 10 position.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Volvo is First, with 22% share (Down 3%), followed by the increasingly menacing BMW (21%, up 1%), with Volkswagen (15%, up 1%) in Third.

BMW's Cool Kids:The  330e and 225xe Active Tourer

Cool Kids Edition

In July a total of 106 EV's were sold in Finland, up 74% YoY, with the EV Share still north of 1%.

Looking at the models ranking, while the Volvo XC90 T8 is untouchable in the leadership, with 187 units, the Second Place changed positions, with the VW Passat GTE (17 units in July, Best Seller of the Month) displacing the BMW X5 PHEV to Third, while in the Fourth position, we also had a change, with the Tesla Model S recovering the BEV leadership from the Nissan Leaf, which had a blank month, its first this year.

In the remaining positions, the BMW 330e climbed two positions to #6, while at the same time surpassed its Merc C350e nemesis.

But it wasn't the only BMW to climb in the ranking, the 225xe Act. Tourer jumped three positions to #10, making it four Bimmers in the Top 10.

With all these cool new PHEV models (Passat GTE, 330e, 225xe AT...) climbing in the ranking, the BEV/PHEV balance is becoming increasingly less...Balanced. While last year plug-in hybrids had 63% of the market, now they own 84%.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Volvo is First, with 25% share (Down 1%), followed by the increasingly menacing BMW (20%, up 4%), with Volkswagen (14%, up 1%) in Third but Mercedes (12%) is still in the race for the Bronze medal.

Running Hot

A total of 682 EV's were sold until the end of June in Finland, already beating last year record of 661 units sold during the whole month of 2015, doubling sales regarding the same period last year, with the EV Share still north of 1%, at 1.04%.

Looking at the models ranking, the hottest seller is the Volvo XC90 T8, with 171 units (New all-time Yearly record), 32 of them last month, thus winning another Monthly Best Seller trophy.

In the remaining positions in the ranking, the BMW X5 40e climbed to Second Place, followed by the VW Passat GTE, while the Tesla Model S rose to Fifth, thanks to the usual last quarter peak (12 units).

But the real surprise this month was the BMW 330e, registering 19 units (New pb), allowing it to be the Second Best Selling model in June and jump to #8 in the YTD ranking.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Volvo is First, with 26% share (Up 1%), followed by the increasingly menacing BMW (16%, up 2%), with Volkswagen (13%) in Third but with Mercedes only five units behind (91 vs 86), its Bronze medal could be in danger next month.

Running Hot

A total of 567 EV's were sold in the until the end of May in Finland, doubling sales regarding the same period last year, with the EV Share still north of 1%, with 1.05%.

Looking at the models ranking, the hottest seller is the Volvo XC90 T8, with 139 units, but last month the BMW X5 PHEV managed to steal the Monthly Best Seller status, with 15 units, with the Swedish SUV only selling 7 units.

In the remaining positions in the ranking, two additional surprises, the Nissan Leaf is still Second Placed, with 53 units, followed closely by the BMW X5 40e, Third with 51 units, so it won't be long for the Bimmer to reach the runner-up position.

Further down in the ranking, we see an important landing, the Mercedes GLC350e registered its first two units, considering the success that PHEV SUV's have in this market, it won't surprising if this models becomes the Best Seller of the brand, even a podium position in certain months.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Volvo is First, with 25% share, followed by the increasingly menacing MW (16%), which has already displaced Volkswagen (14%) to Third.

Running Hot

A total of 390 EV's were sold in the first three months in Finland, up an amazing 162% regarding the same period last year, with the EV Share jumping to 1.18%, a significant departure from the 0.61% of last year.

Looking at the models ranking, the hottest seller is the Volvo XC90 T8 PHEV, with 111 units, at this rapid pace, the swedish SUV will beat the all-time yearly record of 146 units by May...

In the remaining positions in the ranking, two additional surprises, with the Nissan Leaf in the runner-up position, with 42 units, followed by the VW Passat GTE rookie, being warmly received by Finnish buyers.

Further down in the ranking, we see the good performance of the BMW X5 PHEV (#6, with 25 units) and of its Mercedes rival, the GLE500e (#10, 16 units), while on the other hand, the Volvo V60 Plug-in, Best Seller in 2013, is down to #15, with only three units, is the XC90 PHEV, stealing sales from its older brother?

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Volvo is First, with 29% share, followed by Volkswagen (15%) and Nissan (12%).

Looking at the BEV / PHEV breakdown, this traditionally PHEV-friendly market has seen this trend increase even more, with plug-in hybrids currently at 80%, vs 63% of last year.

Another Trophy For Tesla

A total of 661 units were sold in Finland, up 45% regarding the previous year, with the EV Share ending at 0.61%, a significant departure from the 0,42% of last year.

Looking at the models ranking, Tesla succeeded to win the Best Seller title this year, relegating last year winner, the Mitsu Outlander PHEV, to the runner-up position, followed by the Porsche Cayenne Plug-In, in Third.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Tesla also won the title, with 22% share, winning its first title in Finland, while the former crown bearer, Mitsubishi, ended in Second with 16%, followed by Volkswagen in #3, with 13% share.

Looking at the BEV / PHEV breakdown, this traditionally PHEV-friendly market has seen their plug-in hybrids increase share even more, ending the year at 63% vs the 57% of last year.

Tesla Leads Edition

For the first time this year, YoY sales were down in Finland, with October showing a 13% decrease, but with YTD sales at 571 units, sales are already 30% above last year result (440 sales), with the EV Share at 0,63%, a significant departure from the 0,42% of last year, if somewhat still lagging behind their scandinavian neighbors, all above 1% share.

Looking at the models ranking, if the podium remains the same, with the Tesla Model S leader, followed by the Mitsu Outlander PHEV and the Porsche Cayenne in #3, the rest of the ranking has seen two significant changes:

- The VW Golf GTE climbed one position to #4, displacing the Nissan Leaf;

- Instant success for the Mercedes C350e, already in #7.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Tesla leads with 23% share, looking to win its first title in Finland, while the current crown bearer, Mitsubishi, is Second with 16% and leading a group of four brands running close to each other: Volkswagen is #3 also with 16% share, Porsche is #4, with 14% and Nissan is #5 with 12%,

Looking at the BEV / PHEV breakdown, this traditionally PHEV-friendly market has seen plug-in hybrids increase share regarding last year, it is now at 61% / 39% vs the 57 / 43 of last year.

A new Sales Champ?


Tesla Leads Edition

We have updated numbers from Finland up until August, with 447 units sold until now, sales are already above last year, and only 9 units behind the all time record of 456 units, set in 2013, thus showing a market in rapid growth.

Looking at the models ranking, a lot has changed since the last article in March, the Tesla Model S is now leader, followed by the Mitsu Outlander PHEV, while the Porsche Cayenne has found success here, now in #3. That's three AWD models in the podium...

Looking at the rest of the ranking, the VAG cousins Audi A3 e-Tron (#6) and VW Golf GTE (#5) are replicating here the success achieved in other markets, all while the Volvo XC90 Plug-in made its first registration, can the swedish SUV aim for the top next year?
