Every Auto Brand In America Ranked By 2016 SUV/Crossover Sales

Jeep sold 153,709 more SUVs and crossovers in 2016 than the next-best-selling auto brand in America, Ford.

While Ford benefited from far more pickup truck and car sales – Jeep sells neither trucks nor cars – Jeep was the top-selling utility vehicle brand in the United States in 2016.

Ranked eighth, GMC likewise does not sell any cars but does produce more than half its volume with pickups and vans. GMC sold 266,892 SUVs/crossovers in 2016. Land Rover, which markets utility vehicles but no cars, trucks, or vans, ranked 21st overall in SUV/crossover sales and eighth among premium brands. 

Lexus, with 195,174 RX, NX, GX, and LX sales, sold more SUVs/crossovers than any other premium brand. For a fifth consecutive year, the Honda CR-V was America's top-selling utility vehicle in 2016. The CR-V accounts for 64% of Honda's utility vehicle volume. Traditional body-on-frame SUVs accounted for 11% of the 6.9 million utility vehicles sold in the U.S. in 2016.

Overall, U.S. SUV/crossover sales jumped 8%, year-over-year, to generate four out of every ten U.S. new vehicle sales in a record year for America's auto industry.

Small And Midsize Luxury SUV Sales In Canada - December 2016 & 2016 Year End

The Audi Q5 was Canada's top-selling luxury utility vehicle in 2016, the second consecutive year of Audi leadership among premium brand utility vehicles. 

At the end of the long-running first-gen Q5's tenure – a new model is arriving for MY2017 – sales rose 1% even as Audi boosted Q3 sales by 7% and saw Q7 sales nearly triple.

Sales of numerous Audi Q5 rivals grew at a far faster rate. The Acura RDX, BMW X3, Land Rover Discovery Sport (new in 2015), and Porsche Macan reported superior percentage growth. Jaguar also added 1289 F-Pace sales to help make 2016 the best year ever for Jaguar Canada, which grew faster on year-over-year terms than any other multi-vehicle brand in Canada.

Up a notch in size and/or price, the Lexus RX jumped 15% to 8147 units, only 166 sales behind the Audi Q5.

Just as BMW's X models and Mercedes G, GLA, GLC, GLE, and GLS models and Audi's Q models helped those brands set Canadian sales records in 2016, Lexus relied on the RX and smaller NX for nearly two-thirds of the brand's sales. 

With record annual volume, Lexus was Canada's fourth-ranked premium brand for a second year running.

But the Mazda CX-9 remains an exceptionally low-volume family crossover, selling just once for every six Ford Explorers. We, of course, believe the CX-9 deserves better. But until more Canadians recognize the depth of its merits, key CX-9 rivals are selling far, far more often.

2016 was the best year ever for the Toyota Highlander, sales of which jumped 25% to 12,964 units. Among three-row utility vehicles, only the Explorer sold more often. 

Hyundai Santa Fe XL sales jumped 22%. The Dodge Durango was up 69%. Even at the end of their first-gen tenure, Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse sales were on the rise. Dying in the near future, Ford Flex sales rose to a four-year high.
