the Jeffords AMX R with Rambleseat

Not the only Rambleseat AMX, which would cause me to think that there was a lot of desire around AMC to get a rumble seat back onto cars, which had been without them a really log time from a factory production car (T Birds had the "Birds Nest" aftermarket accessory) and I'll guess the last factory rumble seat production car was in the late 30s

this one is known as the Vignale AMX, worked on by the Torino Carrozzier for display at the 1966 New York Auto Show. It's now owned by Fred Phillips of Canada

But it's not the same as the top Jeffords AMX R obviously. The JAMXR had side glass, and a hood with much larger fake airscoops

Safety concerns doomed the Rambleseat idea as AMC's designers revamped the Vignale AMX into the production AMX. In September of 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, which required all new vehicles sold in the United States to have, among other safety items, seat belts, shatter-resistant windshields and energy-absorbing steering columns. If the Act didn't ban rumble seats in letter, it certainly did so in spirit.

Jim Jeffords, meanwhile, arrived at AMC as manager and president of the Javelin Racing Team, Inc., to take the Javelin Trans-Am racing after his great success at racing Corvettes, including the famed Purple People Eater 1958 Corvette, and took SCCA's B Production championship in 1958 and 1959. He also bought the SR2 that Jerry Earl raced in the 56-57 season . One of 3 SR 2s

Jeffords felt that the Vignale AMX promised a Rambleseat AMX, and if AMC wanted to carry that good reception by fans, he'd have some made and sold through AMC dealerships, and his AMX R was even in the Dec 67 Rod and Custom.

AMC didn't seem to be a big fan of Jeffords though, replacing him with Roger Penske for the 1969 racing season, but they did keep the blacked out hood (later called the Shadow Mask option) and the ducktail spoiler on the rear edge of the roof

1967 GT500 427 Drag car (1 of 1)

This car was built for a friend of Caroll Shelby, Clint Lunham, he was a banker in San Francisco at the time. clint wanted to drag race and asked shelby to build him a car.

Shelby wrote how he wanted the car built and what modifications. the engine was a Cobra S.C. lightweight 427; aluminum heads, water pump, balancer, Holman Moody 2x4 intake custom headers and exhaust system, heavy duty radiator, no p.s. cobra oil cooler, remote oil filter, C-6 modified by D and H hydro, 3000rpm stall converter, Ddetroit locker 411s, under ride traction bars,shock towers were cut just above a-frames and plated up to the top to make room for spark plug access and headers. the rear wheel wells lips were cut off, raised and spread a little over an inch and welded back on, still looks like a factory opening just bigger.

The first car to bear the King Ranch name (now an Ford truck high dollar trim level package) was a heavily modified 1946 Ford that sat on a lifted suspension, and could extricate itself with a P.T.O.-driven winch. Spare wheels hung off the back, and the fenders featured game forks and a gun well. It looked pretty much like what it was, though: A home-built attempt at building an SUV.

So, why was a Buick named after one ranch in Texas? The owner was a 7 term congressman, with connections that included Harley Earl, the ranch is bigger than Rhode Island, and it's the biggest ranch in Texas. Yeah, that is mighty big. It's in 6 counties.

King Ranch was founded 9 years after statehood by a New York jeweler’s apprentice who stowed away on a ship to Alabama, later becoming a pilot, and ended up making a fortune in the steamship business on the Rio Grande. But he bought land with the area’s only source of fresh water and coaxed an entire Mexican town (whose population included vaqueros) to move to Texas and work for him.

So, the inheritor of the ranch reached the design staff at Buick under the direction of Harley Earl, and his next ranch car was designed in a joint effort between Buick and the GM Styling Section.

 A Styling Section representative arrived at the ranch in 1949, and Kleberg took him out in the Ford. “He and the GM man took off across the mesquite, hog wallows and dry washes at 60 mph” read a seven-page article in Popular Science. “The visitor got his teeth jolted.” To get over sand dunes, Kleberg aired down the Ford’s tires, and reinflated them with a carbon monoxide fire extinguisher.

They made a 1949 Buick Roadmaster into an SUV. They increased the cooling system to 32 quarts, replaced the rear sheetmetal with 20 gauge, made the hood, doors and trunklid of aluminum, and cut out a fuctional air scoop behind the hood ornament.

a major stockholder once forced a car maker into making her a car in 1935, 17 years after they stopped making cars, and had it designed by Count de Sakhnoffsy

Dr. Tingley used her major stockholding in the White Company, and seat on the board of directors,  to convince the company to manufacture this one-of-a-kind car at a time when White was only manufacturing trucks, light commercial vehicles, and buses. 

Dr. Louisa Tingley on their board of directors, and she wouldn't settle for driving anything but a White. She drove this until 1952

This large, 4-passenger sedan, designed by Count Alexis de Sakhnoffsy, was fabricated using a reduced scale bus body mounted on White's  3/4 ton chassis.

if it looks new... it's because it was ever only used once, for about 14 minutes in 1969 when blasting up Pikes Peak

I posted about it 9 years ago, and the article from the magazine still is defintively the best I've read about it yet, but this is the first time it's been shown publicly in decades, and finally some new photos are available.

It was a win at all costs built car, and the gears in the axle cost $35,000 all by themselves.... in 1969. The Boss 429 was built by Smokey Yunick.

It was used the one time, then it was retired as Ford decided they were done with racing, and they paid for everything to get the best, and win without doubt.

So they hired the fastest guy to get up Pike's Peak, Bobby Unser, who had already won 10 times previous to 1969 (with open wheel cars 1956, and 1958-62 with the Unser Special, 1963 and 66 with a Chevy, (1964 with Sports Car), and 1968 with the Rislone Special) (He also won in 1986 with an "Unlimited" car)

Bobby Unser drove it the one time, and that run set a record (Super Stock Car 13 minutes 40 seconds) that stood for 5 more years until he broke it with a Dodge Dart.

a 1940 Ford cutaway chassis and running gear bought from Iowa state university in 1994, it was offered to the Henry Ford Museum who declined to accept it, thinking they already had one. They don't, they have an Oldsmobile.

a trainer and driver’s education instructor at the university that was employed by the school from the 1950’s well into the 1980’s claimed that he was very familiar with the chassis and that he had, in fact, used the chassis as a teaching tool starting in around 1957. They used the chassis for decades until sometime in the 1980’s.
