Ernest Montaut died at the young age of 31. Prints continued to be produced after his death by his wife Marguerite Montaut.

Ernest Montaut could easily be considered the father of ‘motor speed’ and Mecanic Art. He has invented numerous artistic techniques, such as speed lines and the deliberate distortion of perspective through bending and foreshortening of the image, to capture speed and create the impression of movement in his paintings. Some of his techniques are still used by contemporary artists today.

Pete "Hot Dog" Finlan, is the one pinstriper and painter you probably haven't heard of, but should. His work was awarded a Ridler, and the Von Dutch Award (twice). No one else can claim that

He was the head painter at Monster Garage with Jesse James. And Jesse didn't work with anyone that wasn't tops.

I just love discovering a new artist, and new type of art, and then realizing it's vehicle related and I can share it with all of you. Particularly when it's a combo of things I dig, photography, Victorian retro Greco-Roman paintings, and this trains/busses/garages/scooters admiration I have

Alexey Kondakov imagined figures from classical paintings as part of contemporary life, in his ongoing series ‘The Daily Life of Gods’ where he sees classical paintings brought to everyday life, seamlessly integrated into the existing urban fabric.

Carefully photoshopped onto buses, down alleyways, and in stores, Caravaggio’s ‘David and Goliath’, William-Aadolphe Bouguereau’s ‘Nymphs and Satyr’, and Cesar Van Everdingen’s ‘bacchus’ — to name a few — seemingly become part of daily life in Kiev.

Perfectly-executed shadows and light between the two otherwise desperate images give the resulting pictures a painterly quality, forming the impression of a new era where mythological creatures and religious figures meet contemporary urban existence.

The idea came to Kondakov when a picture of people drinking wine on Tumblr caught his eye, and he had the urge to replace the group with his own entourage. "Then I thought, 'What if I invite these gods into our reality and imagine they are on streets of modern Kiev?'"

"Then I wanted to transform a noisy company of cheerful kids who gathered to spend time together in the city or go to the movies. And in these heroes I saw the work of other artists." Kondatov wants to be clear, though, Daily Life of Gods isn't a commentary on society or religion or art.

the above is one of my favorites of John Godward, Idleness (girl with a kitten) 1900

Yes, I'm a nut for Victorian paintings in the classical genre. Godward was good at marble, but absolutely amazing at fur. Alma Tadema was incredible with marble.

"Song Of The Angels" William Bouguereau 1881

They somehow look like they belong there, their forlorn expressions and sad demeanours matching the tatty seats of the bus or the floors of the subway. It’s very amazing, even if Alexey would have us believe it’s got a more serious undertone.

Ukrainian artist Alexey Kondakov takes scenes and figures lifted from classical paintings and drops them into modern-day life. Bouguereau’s Song of the Angels appears to take place on an empty subway car for example.

I just learned that Lars Erik Fisk was picked by Y&R, São Paulo, Brazil for Goodyear ads in 2012

Why do I bring this up? Lars Erik Fisk was one of the 1st artists that I posted, http://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2007/02/vw-bus-ball-lars-erik-fisk-sculptor.html  and I still think that VW bus ball is incredible

Mooney Warther, master carver, and his masterpiece. The Great Northern Mountain type 4-8-4 locomotive consisted of 7,752 individually carved pieces. Made from ebony, ivory and pearl.

Mooney was a mill worker who started a new career making knives, then became famous for the train engines he masterfully carved from walnut and ebony, mother of pearl and ivory.

the carving was completed in 1933 when Mooney was 48 and at the top of his form.

He lived in Ohio, and his hobby was carving steam locomotives in his spare time, and these are undoubtedly the finest things any man has ever refused to sell.

Each model locomotive is entirely hand carved by this extraordinarily gifted man using no lathe nor machine tools of any sort. The motion parts are all operable as well on each locomotive.

A front view of the Great Northern shows the detail of the drivers and pilot. Note also the thin ivory bell chain looping down the top of the boiler.

the locomotive's bell rope was carved only on Sundays -- so he wouldn't curse when it broke.

Nearly 8,000 pieces, many of them moving -- held together without glue. He carved it in seven and a half months.

He didn't sell his carved trains, he made a museum instead. Most of the carvings are steam engines, with 64 hand-carved, working train models made out of ivory and ebony. The product of Warther's lifelong hobby has been appraised by the Smithsonian Institution and deemed priceless.

One room features 40 years of carvings, carved when Mooney was 28 to 68 years old, includes his first 15 train models. There's also the history of the steam engine, with carvings of engines and trains from 250 B.C. to 1941.

With only a second-grade education, Warther was unable to work in the rail road industry he'd had a lifelong fascination with, because it required at least a sixth-grade education.

He was born and lived his entire life in Dover, Ohio. During his childhood a young Mooney found a small pen knife and began to whittle to pass the time while he was tending his neighbor’s cows. While still a young child a hobo showed him how to whittle a pair of working pliers from a single piece of wood. From these simple pliers would come the most amazing collections of hand carving in the world.

Mooney’s decision to carve trains really came about as a natural extension of his boyhood experience, according to Mark. “ He grew up around roundhouses, where he could see those great locomotives at work. When the railroad companies would toss out their old repair manuals, he would collect them and study how they were built. By age 18, he knew every nut, bolt and rivet that held them together.”

He was featured in the Feb 1946 Popular Mechanics

Dr Suess in advertising (in the 20s and 30s he worked for Standard Oil)

Smiling, toothy creatures such as Zero-doccus, Karbo-nockus, Moto-raspus and Oilio-Gobelus appeared in advertisements that warned motorists of the hazards of driving without the protection of Standard Oil lubrication.

“Meet the Zero-doccus. He is the first if a group of terrible beasts that are being turned loose in the advertising of Essolube, Standard Oil Company (New Jersey) products,” reports the December 8, 1932, Printers’ Insider, an advertising trade journal.
