Canadian sales of midsize cars plunged 13% to 5456 units in February 2017, enhancing the likelihood that Canadians won't buy more than 85,000 intermediate sedans this year.
The Nissan Altima was Canada's top-selling midsize car in February – sales actually increased 11%, though Altima volume is down 2% so far this year.

The clearout of the discontinued Chrysler 200 has resulted in a 70% increase so far this year, but that's an increase that artificially masks just how bad the segment-wide decrease really is. 200-aside, midsize sales are down 17% through the first one-sixth of 2017. |

The American-built Korean fraternal twins, Sonata and Optima, are both on the upswing, but that's only in comparison with 2016, an awful year for both cars.
Last year, Sonata volume had fallen 38% from the Sonata's 2011 peak. Optima volume in 2016 was down 56% from 2012 levels, the fourth consecutive year of decline.

Despite a 12% year-over-year decline to only 705 units, the Toyota Camry was Canada's most popular midsize car in January 2017.
January also hosted the introduction of the all-new 2018 Camry at Detroit's North American International Auto Show. Is a new Camry enough to turn around a category that lost more than 11,000 sales in 2016 and more than 600 in January 2017? Besides the Camry's decline, Canadian sales of the Buick Regal, Chevrolet Malibu, Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata, Nissan Altima, Subaru Legacy, and Volkswagen Passat all declined at double-digit rates.
Only the ultra-low-volume Mazda 6 (Canada's 57th-best-selling car last month) and the discontinued Chrysler 200 (clearing out with steep discounts) posted improvements.
In fact, subtract the gains made by those two cars and their declining cohorts combined for a 19% decrease compared with January 2017.

2016 will not go down in Canada as the year of the midsize sedan.
It will go down as yet another year of rapid midsize sedan sales decline.
Canadian sales of midsize cars fell 11% in 2014. Then, compared with 2014's already lower levels, midsize car sales fell 8% in 2015. Them, compared with 107,000 midsize cars sold in Canada in 2015, sales fell 11% in 2016, a loss of more than 11,000 sales across the segment.
Nearly every contender, including the top-selling Toyota Camry – which claimed best-selling midsize car status for a second consecutive year and the third time in six years – reported fewer sales in calendar year 2016 than in the twelve months of 2015. |

The new Chevrolet Malibu, up 25% but still down 36% from the levels of a decade ago, was Canada's fourth-best-selling intermediate car in 2016.
The Nissan Altima reported a 6% increase to 7753 units, though after averaging more than 14,600 annual sales over the course of the decade ending in 2013, was hardly an overachiever.
