the last vintage hand-hewn granite cobblestone street in Los Angeles from 1913, Bruno Street, from Alameda to Main.

at least two more sites - Werdin Place north of 3rd Street and a nearby alley - were discovered to have granite-block paving in 2004.

Some cars are known for a variety of things, and others, for just one. The 1971 Dodge 3700GT of Spain is known for being blown up during a 1973 assassination

The political career of Luis Carrero Blanco reached its zenith in June 1973 upon being named the Prime Minister of Spain and made a top deputy to Franco.

It seemed he would succeed the ailing dictator.

6 months later the seperatist group ETA (Basque community left wingers) supplied by the USA military with explosives, bombed the road from the church he attended mass at.

The car was instantly regarded as armored, but it isn't, for it's remarkable rugged endurance of the explosion... the left turn signal still works. 100Kg of dynamite, and several anti tank grenades, exploded under it. 2 of the 3 occupants survived the initial blast, for a little while.

The car was lifted over 20meters off the round

A movie film recorded 4 days before the 1906 San Francisco disaster, from the front of a streetcar during filming on Market Street from 8th, in front of the Miles Studios, to the Ferry building. Your coffee and donuts morning video

thanks Jeff!

From the you tube video notes:

The origin of the film was an enigma for many decades, and it was long thought to have been shot in September of 1905, after being dated as such by the Library of Congress based on the state of construction of several buildings. However, in 2009 and 2010, film historian David Kiehn, co-founder of Niles Film Museum in Niles, California, dated the film to the spring of 1906 from automobile registrations and weather records. Kiehn eventually found promotional materials from the film's original release and dated the film to April 14th, 1906, and finally gave credit to the filmmakers, the Miles Brothers.

Accuracy: Automobile sounds are all either Ford Model T, or Model A, which came out later, but which have similarly designed engines, and sound quite close to the various cars shown in the film. The horns are slightly inaccurate as mostly bulb horns were used at the time, but were substituted by the far more recognizable electric "oogaa" horns, which came out a couple years later. The streetcar sounds are actual San Francisco streetcars. Doppler effect was used to align the sounds.

the oldest vehcile repair shop in the USA? Probably. The Fitzpatrick Brothers in Dorchester/Boston Massachusetts still located on the same spot since 1894

Founded in 1894 by Thomas and Martin Fitzpatrick.

In 1919, and in 1929 their sons joined, and then the grandsons Harry and Frank, began in 1954 and 1956 respectively. Finally, greatgrandson  Neale began working full time for the company in the late 1980s.

They transitioned from a horse-drawn wagon repair shop working long hours and instead of body techs they had blacksmiths, wheelwrights and carpenters back then, to a technically advanced collision repair center in 1926, when they became the first auto body repair shop to use spray guns, and they stopped using a paint brush. They are now Mon - Fri, 630am to 330pm

When they celebrated the business' 100th year on September 8, 1994, the Fitzpatricks mailed over 1,000 thank-you cards to all the names accumulated in their database, which was only 6 years old, no one had thought to keep track of the customers for the first 100 years.

To put some perspective on how long Fitzpatrick Brothers has been in business, in 1894 the sport of basketball was only three years old, Dwight Eisenhower was four, the camera was six, the Statue of Liberty was eight, Einstein was 15, and Grover Cleveland was president then.

How did they survive the great depression?  From 1931 to 1937, that generation of Fitzpatricks stayed afloat through a community bartering effort. Cash was almost non-existent, weekly salaries averaged $5, and if you could sweep the floor for a quarter you were doing pretty well for yourself. If they needed groceries, they repaired the grocer's truck. Need some hardware supplies? Surely the store owner was in need of a paint job. When the electrician needed some work done on his car, he'd offer to rewire your building.

It wasn't until the '50s that the business would see its most significant transformation since gasoline. No longer would insurance companies simply acknowledge a claim and send a check. They wanted to see the work now. "The business became really tough," said Franny. "Insurance companies began insisting on negotiating. You had to deal with an agent and present him with your bill. And those were days when $200 and $300 jobs were major operations."

In order to streamline their appraisal and billing process, they purchased a $4,500 computer from Radio Shack in 1979

What made a difference, the brothers say, is that nobody in the family was ever mandated to work for the family business. Harry and Franny's father and uncle never asked them to give up their accounting and radio engineering degrees respectively. They chose the family business like their father and his brother. Harry's two sons, Neale and Scott, have continued the tradition. "It's funny how things work out," Franny philosophized. "We have always had two Fitzpatrick brothers running the business with two more stepping in. We have all wanted to be a part of this. In this day and age when families are falling apart, it's nice to see this kind of longevity."

“It wouldn’t have worked the same way anywhere else, we’re probably the only body shop in the whole world surrounded by residential houses,” Fitzpatrick said. “And 90 percent of those houses are out customers, even when someone gets married and moves to Milton or Quincy, they tell their kids to come by the shop to get work done.”

Fitzpatrick said that while he appreciates his business’ history, his real pride comes from what lays ahead.  “It’s a funny thing, but we’ve been here now for more than 100 years. You won’t become a millionaire doing this kind of work, but it’s satisfying knowing you’re doing the same work as your father, as your grandfather. You know it’s the work you can keep on doing.”

hat tip to Repaint Reporter v75.2, the PPG company magazine

You know how companies like bars seem to have a tradition of framing the first dollar earned for good luck? Don't you wish this company had an 1894 dollar of some type, bank note, silver dollar, whatever... framed? I think that would be awesome, don't you?

History has some completely astonishing stories that we never have heard of. Rarely does it intersect with this auto hobby, and the coachbuilders, but

The book, the Kellner Affair tells the fascinating story of how some people in the French luxury car business who fought bravely against the Nazi occupation force in Paris.

Because you've never heard about Mont Valérien, the prison fortress and Nazi place of execution.

One early morning, the condemned had been transported to the place of execution. The firing squad made ready. The famous coachbuilder Jacques Kellner and Georges Paulin, the gifted designer of gorgeous aerodynamic cars, were dead.

For the Gestapo-controlled court that had handed down the death sentences and the German conscripts who fired the bullets, it was a case of finishing the business, once the culprits had been caught and “justice” metered out. Some names to cross off a list. For France and the nascent French Résistance, it was the loss of heroes who had been willing to give their lives to fight the Nazis and paid the price. For their relatives and loved ones, it was the unbearable loss of what they held dearest in the world.

The author had this to say:

"We started out wanting to tell the story of Joseph Figoni’s life and the story of the marvelous designs he created – that will be a large work: Joseph Figoni, le Grand Couturier de la Carrosserie Automobile (the book is in English). It will be published simultaneously with The Kellner Affair. But as with our previous book about Jacques Saoutchik, we also wanted to set that story into relief against the backdrop of important events that transpired in the protagonist’s lifetime. Since Joseph Figoni became involved—albeit peripherally—with the Phill reseau that counted his colleague and competitor Jacques Kellner and the designer Georges Paulin among its members, much of this backdrop necessarily concerned the fall of France in 1940, the subsequent occupation by the Germans, the formation of the resistance group and what happened to it. First we were going to write it into the body text of the Figoni book. We soon realized that was no good, so we decided to write about Kellner, Paulin and Phill as a series of interludes inserted in the Figoni biography – sort of like a novel with two parallel storylines, and structured in such a manner that they could be read independently. Then the number of interludes started growing. Every time a new dossier came our way, it was clear that the hunt could not stop until we were reasonably sure there were no more to be found. With the dossiers that will be reproduced in an appendix in the back of this book, it became clear that the parallel storyline route also would not work. So we have decided to bite the bullet, and The Kellner Affair will now be a stand-alone book. The Kellner Affair will both be included as a fourth volume with the Figoni book, and published on its own."

33 cars who set out to tour New Zealand in January 1917, to survey the roads to get improvements made, only 10 made it

100 people including MPs, Roads Board members, business managers, telegraph operators, photographers, an ambulance man, three land scouts, a biographer, and a handful of reporters were in 33 cars set out on the tour in January 1917.

Only 10 cars completed the journey, such were the Northland roads and conditions.

Back then the roads North from Auckland were the worst in the country - so when rain began to fall, the dust clouds that had covered everyone were replaced by mud and slush. Cars capsized or became bogged, axles broke and tires burst, making the two week journey arduous and unpleasant.

Many of the cars had to be towed out by teams of ox, and so many became fed up with the conditions they resorted to shipping their cars back.

In spite of these atrocious conditions it was not until 1936 the road became an all weather route through the Waipu Gorge and the main road didn't pass over the Brynderwyns until 1938.

Construction of the coastal road north of Wellington, 1939.

Yesterday they finished a centennial with 100 year old cars, and some people were in period correct costumes, and where possible they took the original route, but avoided areas where they would hold up traffic

railroad tycoons paid off congress to pass the Pacific Railway Act of 1864 it doubled the size of land grants awarded to railways

As you can see from the above map, the total number of acres granted to the railroads was enormous. In total, the railroads received more than 175 million acres of public land

If the Homestead Act was Exhibit A of congressional and Government Activism, the Pacific Railway Acts were "Activist Government on Steroids".

origin of the term Rummage Sale history lesson, 1898

Modern day yard sales have their origin in rummage sales that first emerged in port cities around the docks. Derived from a nautical term that dates back to the late 16th century, the word rummage referred to the storage of items such as rum casks in the hold of a ship. After a ship put into port, damaged or unclaimed goods would be hauled out and put up for sale on the docks - hence the term rummage sale.

Bridges... the fastest way to make them used to be just dropping a log across a cleft. This is the only untrussed log bridge I've ever seen with a train on it, made of just two logs.

the Minnetonka was the Northern Pacific Railroad's Locomotive No. 1.

Built in 1870, it was first used in northern Minnesota, then brought to the the Olympic peninsula for use in logging.

Photo taken in the mid 1880's

The bridge is just two long logs spanning the river with sufficient structural strength to support the track, locomotive and railcars full of big logs.

These are civil war vets. It's odd to think about the civil war, 150 odd years ago, and then realize the survivors lived into the 1930s....

George Van Natta (by the front tire) was one of the best known Civil War veterans in the Ashland Oregon area, he was connected with the Ashland city police for a number of years and served as county road commissioner. He came west shortly after the end of the Civil War and for 40 years resided in Ashland, engaged in the fruit growing business.

When but 17 years of age Mr. Van Natta responded to Lincoln's call to fight for the preservation of the Union, enlisting in August 1862 in Company E. 99th Indiana Infantry, and serving under Sherman from the battle of Vicksburg to the close of the Civil War, participating in the Grand Review at Washington D. C., before President Lincoln at the close of the conflict.

Born In Tippecanoe, Indiana April 20, 1846, Mr. Van Natta was aged 85 years, six months and nine days at the time of his death.

L.L. Whitman at the wheel of a Franklin in 1904 after driving from San Francisco to NYC in 33 days.

In 1903 L.L. Whitman drove a Curved Dash Olds on that route SF to NYC in over 60 days...
along with John Hammond. There is a book about it https://www.amazon.com/1903-Curved-Dash-Oldsmobile-Horseless-Carriage/dp/B0006EIGKG and they went on to Boston, and Portland Maine,  and then drove that Olds on the 1903 Endurance Run up through the Catskills.

The Olds had a single cylinder engine mounted horizontally under the seat.

Then he went cross country on a Franklin, which had a 4 cylinder transverse front mounted air cooled engine driving the rear wheels through a long chain. Went across in 33 days, half the time it took with the Olds

Supposedly the 1904 Franklin Type A Roadster which set the SF to NYC cross-country record of 33 days beating Packard's 64 day record. the 99s

Aviators in Early Hollywood By Shawna Kelly

The organization was founded November 2, 1929, at Curtiss Field, Valley Stream, Long Island, New York. All 117 women pilots at the time were invited to assemble for mutual support, the advancement of aviation and a central office to keep files on women in aviation. Louise Thaden was elected secretary and worked to keep the group together as they struggled to establish themselves and to grow.

With over 150 chapters in the United States and Canada and another 17 offshore Sections located on five continents, nearly every member can feel connected to a nearby group. These groups work with their local communities to support the mission of The 99s: promote the advancement of aviation through education, scholarships and mutual support. Chapters and Sections sponsor and teach educational sessions for youth and adults. With youth, they use aviation to bolster STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) classes for youth, interesting them in the possibilities that STEM fields offer, for adults, they offer seminars for the companions of light aircraft pilots.

Ever hear about the sabotage in the garages at the 1969 Can Am race at Riverside?

Controversy surrounding the 12th Riverside Grand Prix.

According to one documented account, the Group 7 unlimited horsepower cars driven by Chris Amon and Lothar Molschenbacher "had been tampered with" prior to the $70.000 Oct. 26 Canadian-American Challenge Cup race.

Amon, veteran Formula 1 pilot from New Zealand, was assigned to a factory Ferrari which encountered numerous mechanical problems prior to the race. Amon's crew discovered, in a routine check before the staging on the grid, that the cotter pin had been removed from the balance bar, a vital part of the braking system. Another pin was inserted.

Although the 700-horsepower Ferrari started after the rest of the 36-car field had been led away by the Barracuda pace car, it was blackflagged off the track three laps later for a push start by its crew.

All cars must be started internally, according to SCCA rules. Soon after the start the new brake lining worked itself loose, forcing a pit stop which put the crimson-and-white car out of contention. It finished 16th.

Although the saboteur or saboteurs were never caught, one fact remains: They had easy access into the garage area, enabling them to perform such an act. Motschenbachcr. a German-born mechanic-driver from Beverly Hills, discovered a left rear flex line of his McLaren MK-12 Chevrolet had been cut, presumably with wire cutters. The Molschenbacher crew changed the flex line and bled the brakes, arriving 10 minutes late at the pre-grid.

Unlike other sanctioning bodies such as the United States Auto Club (USAC) and the National Assn. for Stock Car Racing (NASCAR), the SCCA does not enact stringent security measures to bar non-participants from the pits and garages.

Anyone (child, girlfriend or grandmother) can purchase a $5 paddock pass which allows free reign in the working garages. A milling throng of 80,200 attended the Riverside Grand Prix. It seemed they all had paddock passes. At 10 a.m. on race day, it looked like Times Square on V-J Day. Drooling babes in arms, girls wearing that blank expression of "What's going on here?" and the perennial camera buff loaded down with $2,000 worth of equipment, strolled through the garages.

One mechanic, working on Dan Gurney's McLeagle Chevy, had to push his way through a layer of. six bodies to reach the car. As soon as he bent down to work on the left rear wheel hub, the young man found himself entombed by spectators leering over his head. Under such conditions it would be a simple matter to drop a foreign object, like a bolt or rock, down the engine stacks of the intake manifold. The cutting of a fuel line or brake lining would pose no special problems.

Riverside president Les Lichter denied any connection between the spectators and the tampering. "Although they (the spectators) may cause some inconvenience to the workers in the garages." said Richter. "It is very doubtful that sabotaging of cars occurs because of them. I think it would be unfortunate to make a rule and just say, 'No, you can't come in here anymore.' For many of these fans, the garage activity is more interesting than the ' race."

Sometime between 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday, the tampering was rumored to have occurred. Whether it was a crew member of a rival outfit or a 'sadistic spectator,' no one seemed to know. But can the racing fraternity afford to shun the incident? Racing is inherently dangerous without adding the specter of sabotage. More stringent laws, limiting access lo the garage area lo drivers, crew members and working press, should be enacted by the SCCA. A novelty for spectators can hardly be an adequate excuse for endangering a driver's life.
