Surprises Edition

Two abnormalities this month in Italy, possibly derived from fleet deals, the Smart Fortwo Jumps to #1 YTD with 74 units in May (Personal Best), while the thought-dead Renault Fluence ZE also scores record sales, with 16 units, allowing it to climb to #7.

Numb Edition



After 190 units sold in March, the Italian EV market went back to two-digits in April, with the EV Share stuck at 0,09%. But all is not bad, the total amount of sales this year are at 439 units, way above the 274 registered a year ago.


There wasn't any real surprises in the ranking, with only three models (Twizy, Leaf and BMW i3) scoring significant sales.



In the YTD ranking the Twizy is #1 and the last place of the podium changed hands, with the BMW i3 (28 sales in April) rising to #3 and the Renault Zoe dropping to #4, the french hatch had an horrible month, selling just 4 units, its worst result ever.

Is it just me or the i3 will suit really well in the italian streets?

Market Wakes Up Edition

After two below-par months, in March the Italian EV market doubled last year result to 162 units, with the Nissan Leaf (54 units) presenting the best sales result of the year and making it rise to the YTD leadership.

The rest of the YTD podium is made by two Renault, with the Twizy in Second and the Zoe (#2 in March) in Third.

The surprise of the month was the BMW i3, winning the last place in the podium, with 26 units sold, beating the Renault Twizy and the Model S(!) from Tesla, the american star had a good month, selling 11 cars and rising to #6.

Final mention for the arrival of the VW e-Up!, registering its first 4 units.

Fortwo beats Twingo

Italy used to be a safe haven for the Renault Twizy, but not anymore, after the Nissan Leaf and Volvo V60 winning monthly #1's last year, now in February it's the Smart Fortwo ED beating the french ev at the top of the table, selling 30 units (Fleet deal maybe?).

The other ev with decent sales is the japanese Leaf, with 13 units, while the Volvo V60 is just #6, pulling the PHEV share down four points to 7%.

The Twizy once again was #1 in Italy. But the competition is getting closer...

Something In The Air Edition

The Italian EV market had its second best month of the year, with 188 units, ending 2013 with the EV share at 0,11%, 0,02 behind last year score.

On the monthly ranking we see something unheard in small-car-loving, pure-electric-friendly Italy: The midsize, plug-in hybrid Volvo V60 Plug-In climbed to #1 with 79 units sold! This is one of the strongest signs that something is changing in Euro-EV-land...

The YTD chart crowned the Renault Twizy for the second year in a row as the Best Selling EV in Italy, but this time sales were a lot less (432 units in '13 vs 1.545 in '12) and the competition were a lot closer.

Second place went for the Nissan Leaf, which sold twice as much as last year (323 vs 146) and finishing the podium we have the Renault Zoe.

PHEV grew from just 3% last year to 12%, thanks to the surprising V60 Plug-In, #5 in the ranking and Best Selling PHEV in '13.

Speaking of PHEV's, 2014 might witness many changes in the top places, not only the V60 will be a regular customer of the #1 spot, but Tesla and the VW boys (e-Up! and e-Golf) could be strong contenders here. And one must always count on the Mitsu Outlander PHEV to surprise everyone...

Mahindra intends to sell its E2O EV in Europe, and city-car loving Italy would be a nice place to start

The Italian EV market had its best month of the year, with 189 units, pushing the EV share to 0,10%, the best score since...Last year.

On the monthly ranking, two newcomers are making themselves noticed, while the Nissan Leaf secured another #1 (The fourth of the year), in the remaining podium positions we have two new players, in #2 we find the Volvo V60 Plug-In, selling 35 units and achieving the best position ever for a PHEV here, it seems that the swedish wagon found a way to crack and succeed in the BEV-small-car-friendly Italy.

In third came the BMW i3 with 29 units, a great start for the bavarian car and surely one of the candidates for #1 next year.

The YTD chart had changes at the lower levels, with the Renault Fluence ZE losing two positions in favor of the aforementioned V60 Plug-In (Now #5) and the Citröen C-Zero, which had a strong month, selling 14 units, although "strong" can be relative, if we remember that a year ago it was #3 in the monthly chart and now those 14 cars were only enough for #6...

Is this the first Plug-In Hybrid to succeed in Italy?

Twizy Again Edition

The Italian EV market grew for the second month on a row to 116 units, with the Renault Twizy (48 units) presenting the second best sales result of the year.

In second came the Nissan Leaf, with 25 units, enough to cement its #2 place in the YTD chart.

The surprising Volvo V60 Plug-In won the last place in the podium, with 15 units sold, beating the usual suspects Smart Fortwo ED and Renault Zoe, both having sold 12 units.

No changes in the YTD chart, with the exception of the rapid rise of the V60 in the ranking (It's now #6), leading to a curious fact: The swedish wagon only needed three months to beat the Opel Ampera (#7) as the Best Selling PHEV in Italy.

Will this be the first Plug-In Hybrid to sell significantly here? Only time will tell...

Twizy Recovers Some Mojo Edition

After a terrible month of August (Just 52 units sold), italian EV sales bounced back to a more usual 96 units, with the Renault Twizy presenting the best sales result since last May, with 38 units, breaking two months of monthly leadership of the Nissan Leaf, which came in second with 33 units.

The last place in the podium went for the Renault Zoe, which sold 13 units, keeping the #4 Smart Fortwo ED at a safe distance.

The Renault Zoe crossed the Alps in April to become a major player there

After 80 units sold in May and 45 in June, the Renault Zoe sales in Italy dropped to just 18 in July, helping the total EV sales to drop 46% regarding last month, totaling 100 units in July, albeit still enough to keep the EV share at 0,09%, 0,04% behind the 2012 score (0,13%).

The Nissan Leaf profited from the lowering form of the Zoe to consolidate its #2 in the YTD chart.

Looking at the brands ranking, Renault still rules with 58% share, but it has lost 19% share regarding '12, to major benefit of the second placed Nissan, up from 6% to 23%, and third placed Smart, up from 2% to 14%, by the way, Smart already sold 3 times more electric cars this year than it did in all 2012.

Just when it looked that Italy was going to be Zoeland, when in May the french electric car delivered the best performance of the year with 80 sales, in June the Nissan Leaf surged to beat Zoe's performance by selling 83 units, leaving it 37 units behind, with 45 Zoe sales.

This surprising fight, together with solid months of the Twizy (#3 with 32 sales) and the Smart Fortwo ED (#4, with 16 units), enabled this month to beat May as best sales month with 182 units sold and recover the EV share to 0,083%.

These June events allowed for the Nissan Leaf to jump two positions to second place and push the Zoe and Fortwo ED down one position.

The Rise of Zoe - Italian Edition

Finally a good month for the Italian EV market, with 165 units sold it's the best month this year and one of the best performances ever, which lead their share to improve to a still shy 0,07%, almost half of what was in the end of last year (0,13%).

The Renault Zoe jumped to #1 in May and #2 YTD, making this one of the countries where the french supermini got a warmest welcome.

In third comes the Smart Fortwo ED, climbing five positions on the '12 performance, relegating the Nissan Leaf to the fourth position.
