The Sun is Shining Edition

Great month for the japanese EV market, there were 2.777 sales in Japan last month, selling a massive 1.000 units more than the same month last year, leading the EV Share up to 0,94%.

The Outlander PHEV (1.300 registrations) won for the first time since January the Best Seller Of the Month title.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Nissan (46%) continued ahead of Mitsubishi (45%), but the margin is now minimum.

Nothing To Declare Edition

There were 1.553 new plug-ins in Japan last month, selling 229 more units over the same month last year, with no relevant changes in the ranking, the Nissan Leaf (743 units sold) was Best Selling EV for the fourth consecutive time, increasing some 200 units its advance over the #2, the Outlander PHEV (563 registrations).

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Nissan (47%) continued ahead of Mitsubishi (45%).

Japan All Time Top 5 (Up to April'14)

The Nissan Leaf is a distant leader thanks to a consistent sales rhythm of 10.000/year since it went on sale and the Prius PHEV is profiting from a good 2012 to remain in second place, but the Mitsu Outlander PHEV is rising and it could reach #2 this year still.

#1 in Japan for the third month in a row

Off Month Edition 

Japan is a highly seasonal market, with April and May being the worst selling months of the year, but this April reached only 985 units, the worst performance of the last two years, for the record, in April '13, there were 1.364 units. An Off month? Let's wait and see. 

All models suffered, but the Nissan Leaf (508 units sold) was the least affected, increasing some 300 units its advance over the #2, the Outlander PHEV. .

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Nissan (47%) surpassed Mitsubishi (45%), but 2% share is nothing between these two, so it looks like the race will hard untill the end.

Mitsu I-Miev as a japanese police car

Leaf and Butterfly Edition 

With 2.421 units registered, sales were a little behind expectations, especially if we look back a year ago, when sales reached 3.466 units, the main responsible for this less than stellar performance is the Outlander PHEV, scoring just 736 registrations, if we believe in the butterfly effect, this bad result could mean that the Mitsubishi SUV will have a super-month in April, somewhere in the world (Netherlands maybe?). 

Looking at the models ranking, the Nissan Leaf (1.201 units sold) is now head and shoulders in the leadership, with some 700 units above the #2, the Outlander PHEV.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Mitsubishi (47%) is still ahead of Nissan (46%), but 1% share is nothing between these two, so it looks like the race will be to the end.

Japan February 2014

Duel in the (Rising) Sun Edition 

Just a little bit late, i can now report the February numbers in Japan, which is one of the the best selling months and this year continued the trend, with 4.085 units registered, 10% behind last year, but still the second best selling month ever for plug-ins, leaving the EV Share at 1,28%. 

Looking at the models ranking, the Nissan Leaf is fighting a hard race with the Outlander PHEV for the Best Selling EV title in Japan, with one monthly win for each (January for the Mitsu SUV, February for the Nissan Hatch) this year, and just 216 units separating them on the YTD chart.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Mitsubishi (49%) benefits from the Miev family to win those extra sales and stay ahead of Nissan (42%).

Japan November 2013 (Updated)

It will be interesting to see how japanese welcome Tesla on their shores

Outlander Edition 

Ending November countries roundup we have the japanese market, with 3.278 units sold, it's profiting from the sales of the Outlander PHEV (1.705 sales) are in full swing, rising 53% regarding last month, and 30% if we consider a year ago. The EV Share is now at 0,82%, the best score since last February.

Looking at the models ranking, the Nissan Leaf had a solid month (1.306 units), but it wasn't enough to steal the monthly #1 from the Outlander PHEV, the strong favorite for the 2014 crown

Fourth and third are separated by just two units in the YTD chart and with the #4 I-Miev losing every time for its stablemate Minicab Miev since June, December should crown the little LCV with the #4.

Looking at the brands ranking, Mitsubishi (43% share) is again breathing on Nissan's neck (44%), anticipating a thrilling fight in December between these two.

These Nissan NMC remind me of something...But i just can´t remember what that is.

Nissan Edition 

Ending the October month roundup, we get Japan, that with 2.145 units sold, it dropped 25% regarding last month and it's 224 less than a year ago.

Looking at the models ranking, the Nissan Leaf continued in the four digit area (1.257 units), while the #2 Outlander PHEV registered just 560 units, a small number explained by Mitsu's focus on foreign markets.

Finally, we assist the landing of the Renault Twizy Nissan NMC, with the first 45 registrations of  a presumably short number of units.

Japan September 2013

With more than 30.000 units, the Leaf is the most popular EV in Japan

Out of the Woods Edition 

Before starting the October Editions, let's look at Japan in September, with 2.690 units sold, this was the fourth month in a row of growth, continuing the upward trend and making September the third best month of the year.

Maybe spiked by the return of the Outlander PHEV, the Nissan Leaf posted its best performance in two years(!), selling 1.565 units, securing even more the YTD #1 spot and allowing for Nissan to recover again the #1 manufacturer title from Mitsubishi. 

With the rise in sales, the EV share is ever so slightly back in positive numbers, with 0,773% share, 0,003% above 2012.

Slowly Recovering Edition 

Now that the Outlander PHEV sales are active again, both Mitsubishi and the japanese EV market as a whole are in the upward trend, with Mitsu already recovering the #1 spot on the brands chart with 48%.

September should see the Plug-in SUV get to #1 and start to challenge the YTD leadership of the Nissan Leaf.

With the extensive reservations backlog of the Outlander now ready to be fulfilled, it looks that Mitsu will end this year in #1 and recover the japanese crown after all...

Two Generations side-by-side, the newbie Outlander PHEV and the veteran I-Miev

Waiting for Better Days Edition

This title refers to two different, but connected situations, the first is the horrible summer that Mitsubishi is experiencing, due to the battery problems occurred last Spring. With just 175 units sold this month, Mitsu lost another 4% share to 48% and sees a bullish Nissan right behind (47%), looking to recover the Best Selling Brand title, after winning it in 2011.

The second event refers to the below average sales that the japanese EV market is registering, this month the tally ended in 1.309 units, the best monthly result since March, but well bellow the 4.500 units registered in February, resulting in another drop of the EV share to 0,75%, now 0,02% down on 2012 hallmark (0,77%).

To the rescue of both situations comes the Outlander PHEV, which resumed production in the end of August, after months of zero production, this will help greatly on the recovery of Mitsubishi and the japanese EV market as a whole, and with an expected production of some 2.000 units/month, it's just in time to put pressure on the Nissan Leaf for the Best Selling Model Title...
