Japan January 2016 (Updated)

Second Life Edition

The Japanese EV market started the year on good note, with sales up 45% regarding January 2015, with the 3.500 units representing the best month since September '14, placing the EV Share at 0.93%, will this mean that the Japanese EV market is back on track?

The 30kWh version of the Nissan Leaf arrived in a big way and propelled Nissan's hatch to near record levels, with 2.503 units (Record was 2.593 units, made in Feb. '11), leaving behind the Outlander PHEV by a wide margin, Mitsu's SUV recorded 801 units, dropping 3% YoY.

Japan December 2015

Outlander PHEV Number One

For the first time ever, the Japanese EV market saw its sales decrease, with sales down 22% regarding last year, going back to the sales level of 2012.

Besides low gas prices, another reason for this is the late arrival of the 30kWh version of the Nissan Leaf, which leaded customers to wait for the new version, thus hurting sales (9.057 units, worst performance ever), leaving Nissan's electric hatch out of the leadership by a wide margin and allowing the Outlander PHEV to win its first Best Selling EV title in its home market, and for Mitsubishi to recover the Best Selling Manufacturer trophy (Its fourth, after those won in 2009, 2010 and 2013), after losing in 2014 to the arch-rival Nissan.

Below these two, the runout-mode Prius Plug-In won its third consecutive Bronze Medal, while Mitsu's pure-electric products have continued to see their sales slow down over the years, with the I-Miev, Minicab Miev and Minicab Miev Truck sales dropping 75% regarding their all-time highs.

On the contrary, the foreign models are slowly climbing positions and it won't be surprising to see the BMW i3 reach #3 in 2016.

Japan October 2015

Outlander PHEV Number One

Another month in the red, with sales down 30% YoY to 1.785 units, and the EV Share at a paltry 0.52%, a long way down from the 0,98% of last year.

Besides low gas prices, another reason for this poor performance is the 30kWh version of the Nissan Leaf, only set to arrive in December and leading customers to wait for the new version, until then, Nissan's electric hatch is left with slow sales, like the 359 units recorded last month, down 69%(!) regarding October '14, On the other hand, the Mitsu Outlander PHEV is now firm in #1, and unless the Leaf pulls out a record-breaking performance in December, Mitsu will see its plug-in SUV finally be crowned as the Best Selling EV in its home market, after two previously failed attempts and recover the Best Selling Manufacturer Trophy, after losing in 2014 to the arch-rival Nissan.

Japan July 2015

Outlander PHEV Bounces Back

After several months in the red, sales bounced back in July, growing 23% YoY to 3.501 units, making it the best selling month in tem months.

This sudden bump in sales is due to the launch of the restyled Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which sold 2.383 units, a number that sets a new monthly record for a single model and places it in #30 in the general ranking.

With the Leaf selling half (694 units) of what it did a year ago, the Outlander PHEV is back at the race for #1, it is still 875 units behind Nissan's hatch, but if the current leader doesn't rebound (The rumoured 30kWh...), Mitsu will take its restyled plug-in SUV to the leadership before year end.

Looking at the brands ranking, Nissan (44%) lost share over Mitsubishi (41%), and next month might even see a leadership change.

A final mention to the FCEV Toyota Mirai, 41 units were registered last month, not much, but it's a starting point, let's see how things develop from here.

Mitsu Minicab Miev Truck: Best Selling Electric Pick-Up Truck. In the World. Respect.

Waiting for Better Days

Another negative month (The third in a row), with sales in June down 49% YoY, and only 11k sales YTD, you have to go back three years to see such low numbers in this market.

Looking at the YTD models ranking, the positions are stable, with the Leaf once more in #1, with sales down just 34% regarding March '14, while the #2 Outlander PHEV in Japan was down 87%(!), to just 221 units. Mitsu is hoping the restyled plug-in SUV can rebound sales and end a 16 month leadership of the Nissan Leaf. Hopefully the new Outlander can sign the beggining of a recovery soon...

Looking at the brands ranking, Nissan (50% Share) has a large advantage over Mitsubishi (32%), and is most certain to win the manufacturers title for the fourth time, the third in a row (Nissan won in 2011, 2013 and 2014).

Japan March 2015

Mitsu Minicab Miev Truck: Best Selling Electric Pick-Up Truck. In the World. Respect.

Back to 2012

Despite a positive March (Up 32 units regarding the same month last year), YTD the Japanese EV Market is down 23%, far not only from the 10k units registered in the same period last year, but also in the first quarter of 2013, you have to go back three years to see such low numbers in this market.

Looking at the YTD models ranking, the positions don't change much, with the Leaf once more in #1, recording more or less the same number of units of March '14, while the #2 Mitsu Outlander PHEV in Japan is suffering from Mitsubishi's production constraints.

Looking at the brands ranking, Nissan (50% Share) is winning valuable advantage over Mitsubishi (35%), looking to revalidate the manufacturers ranking

Japan February 2015

This one is missing from the chart, let's it won't be for long...

The Exception

Unlike the upbeat trend going on in most of the major EV markets, the Japanese is down a harsh 44%,  with 2.934 units sold last month, which is the worst February since 2012, this is even more significant since it usually is one of the best selling months of the year...

The consequence of all this is that the EV Share has plunged to 0,63%, far from the 0.98% held by the end of 2014, considering that the Toyota Terminator Mirai FCV has been warmly received in Japan (At least 1.500 orders, when Toyota expected to deliver just 400 units in the whole year of 2015), can this mean that the local EV market will be the first/only to be threatened by the arrival of FCV's?

Anyway, looking at the YTD models ranking, the Leaf is once more in #1, while the #2 Mitsu Outlander PHEV disappointed, selling only 603 units, the explanation should be found next month, as it isn't the first time that its local market is sacrificed to place more units in more profitable markets ("UK, anyone?").

Japan December 2014

This one is coming to back-up Nissan's race with Mitsubishi.

Leaf Again

An average month, with 2.513 units sold last month, which is 22% below the previous year, but nevertheless the YTD numbers ended with 32.403 units, a 2.000 units increase over the previous record.

Looking at the YTD models ranking, the Leaf ended again in #1, achieving its Third Best-Seller Title (2011, 2013 and now 2014), with a new yearly record (14.177 units), while the #2 Mitsu Outlander PHEV disappointed, only improving slightly its performance over last year (+456 units to 10.064 units),The rest of the models have small numbers, but the Mitsu Minicab Miev Truck saw its sales dip to just 177 units.

Looking at the brands ranking, Nissan (44%) won over Mitsubishi (37%), and with the addition of the e-NV200 coming soon, things can only get better for Nissan.

Japan October 2014

This one is coming to back-up Nissan's race with Mitsubishi.

Back to Normal Edition

After record sales in September, the Japanese went back to its usual self, with 2.573 units sold last month, pulling the EV Share up again to 0,98% (Will we see this market end the year at 1%?).

Looking at the models ranking, the top two models had different performances, with the Leaf again #1 (Fourth in a row), with an average result (1.162 units), while the Mitsu Outlander PHEV only registered 538 units, considering the known production constraints of Mitsubishi, it looks that it is sacrificing its home market to benefit others abroad, and with the year end sales peak coming soon, it wouldn't be much of a surprise such decision.

The rest of the models are in cruise speed, with the big question mark being Tesla, how will consumers react to it?

Looking at the brands ranking, after a tight race throughout the year, Nissan (44%) has finally left Mitsubishi (38%) behind, and with the addition of the e-NV200 coming soon, things can only get better, in order to recover the Best Selling Manufacturer Title won in 2011 (Mitsubishi won it in 2009, 2010 and 2013, while Toyota had it in 2012).

Japan update: ADAS, wearables, integrated cockpits, and autonomous cars

Yoshiki Chubachi
Yoshiki Chubachi
Will the joy of driving be a design criterion for tomorrow’s vehicles? It had better be.

A couple of weeks ago, QNX Software Systems sponsored Telematics Japan in Tokyo. This event offers a great opportunity to catch up with colleagues from automotive companies, discuss technology and business trends, and showcase the latest technology demos. Speaking of which, here’s a photo of me with a Japan-localized demo of the QNX CAR Platform. You can also see a QNX-based digital instrument cluster in the lower-left corner — this was developed by Three D, one of our local technology partners:

While at the event, I spoke on the panel, “Evolving ecosystems for future HMI, OS, and telematics platform development.” During the discussion, we conducted a real-time poll and asked the audience three questions:

1) Do you think having Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will augment a vehicle brand?
2) Do you expect wearable technologies to be integrated into cars?
3) If your rental car were hacked, who would you complain to?

For question 1, 32% of the audience said CarPlay and Android Auto will improve a brand; 68% didn't think so. In my opinion, this result indicates that smartphone connectivity in cars is now an expected feature. For question 2, 76% answered that they expect to see wearables integrated into cars. This response gives us a new perspective — people are looking at wearables as a possible addition to go with ADAS systems. For example, a wearable device could help prevent accidents by monitoring the driver for drowsiness and other dangerous signs. For question 3, 68% said they would complain to the rental company. Mind you, this raises the question: if your own car were hacked, who would you complain to?

Integrated cockpits
There is growing concern around safety and security as companies attempt to grow more business by leveraging connectivity in cars. The trend is apparent if you look at the number of safety- and security-related demos at various automotive shows.

Case in point: I recently attended a private automotive event hosted by Renesas, where many ADAS and integrated cockpit demos were on display. And last month, CEATEC Japan (aka the CES of Japan) featured integrated cockpit demos from companies like Fujitsu, Pioneer, Mitsubishi, Kyocera, and NTT Docomo.

For the joy of it
Things are so different from when I first started developing in-car navigation systems 20 years ago. Infotainment systems are now turning into integrated cockpits. In Japan, the automotive industry is looking at early 2020s as the time when commercially available autonomous cars will be on the road. In the coming years, the in-car environment, including infotainment, cameras and other systems, will change immensely — I’m not exactly sure what cars in the year 2020 will look like, but I know it will be something I could never have imagined 20 years ago.

A panel participant at Telematics Japan said to me, “If autonomous cars become reality and my car is not going to let me drive anymore, I am not sure what the point of having a car is.” This is true. As we continue to develop for future cars, we may want to remind ourselves of the “joy of driving” factor.

Japan September 2014

Now, That's More Like It!

To finish a positive month for plug-ins around the world, good news from the japanese market: 3.897 units were sold last month, the second best month of the year, pulling the EV Share to 0,94% (Will we see this market end the year at 1%?), while the top two models also had their second best result of the year, with the Leaf again #1 (1.756 units), probably benefitting from the Outlander PHEV (1.450) production constraints, as such, it looks that the Leaf will be again the Best Seller of the Year.

Good result for the Prius Plug-In, with 358 sales, securing a comfortable Third Spot YTD, while the #6 BMW i3 is looking to pass the Miev duo above it.

Three new models appear on the ranking: Tesla registered its first 8 units in Japan and BMW sold its first i8, and a new model shows up here, despite being on sale since last year: The Accord Plug-In joins the ranking in #8, hoping to pass the Minicab Miev Truck and reach #7.

Japan August 2014 (Updated)

Leaf -  6 Outlander - 2

With 1.917 sales last month, the japanese market was down 22% regarding the same month last year, dragging down the EV Share to 0,90%, less than the 0,92% set last year.

The Leaf won again its duel with the Outlander PHEV, which has sold just 457 units last month, are buyers already waiting for the new model?

Good result for the BMW i3 in Japan, with regular three digit sales, making itself noticed on this difficult market.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Nissan (45%) extended their lead over Mitsubishi (40%), and it looks set to recover the Best Selling Brand title.
