Portugal February 2016

Portuguese companies found a new love

Mercedes C350e #1 Edition

EV Sales continue on the rise, with 135 registrations, a 165% increase YoY, placing the EV Share at 0.81%, a new all-time record, with the bulk of the growth coming from Plug-In Hybrids, with this technology reaching 65% share, with 2016 being the first time PHEV's surpassed BEV's in this market.

This shift in buyers tastes is visible in the models ranking, with the Top 2 models being Plug-in Hybrids, the Mercedes C350e is now in First Place, dropping the Mitsu Outlander PHEV to Number Two.

The first all-electric vehicle comes in Third, with the Nissan Leaf registering 26 units, a 188% rise YoY.

Outside the podium, the Volvo V60 Plug-In (19 units, new record) has surpassed the BMW i3, which has collected an additional 11 units in February, all being of the BEV variety.

There are two newcomers to the ranking, both BMW's, the 225xe Active Tourer has registered its first three units, while the 330e landed with two units, considering the success of the Mercedes C350e in this market, the 330e might also have a bright future here.

In the manufacturers ranking, Mercedes (25% Share) is the new leader, being the first time that the german brand ascends to the Manufacturers Top Spot anywhere. Second in the ranking we have Mitsubishi (20%), with Nissan in Third (15%).

Plug-Ins Versus Regular Hybrids

PlModel  Feb. 2016
1Toyota Auris Hybrid72
2Toyota Yaris Hybrid59
3Mercedes C300 Hybrid44
4Mercedes C350e31
5Nissan Leaf26

If we combine February regular hybrid sales with plug-ins, the Toyota Auris Hybrid is #1, followed by its smaller brother Yaris Hybrid relative and the Mercedes C300 diesel hybrid, in surprising Third Spot.

In fourth we have another Mercedes C-Class, this time the gas plug-in hybrid version, followed by the all electric Nissan Leaf.

Portuguese companies found a new love

Mitsu Outlander PHEV Excels Edition

EV Sales had a great start in Portugal, with 114 registrations, a 256% increase YoY, placing the EV Share above 0.8%, a new all-time record, with the bulk of this growth coming from Plug-In Hybrids, with this technology reaching 68% share, being the first time PHEV's surpassed BEV's in this market.

This shift in buyers tastes is visible in the models ranking, the Mitsu Outlander PHEV started the year in #1, with 37 units, more than double than the sales of the runner-up, the Mercedes C350e, which, by the way, is another Plug-in hybrid...

The first all-electric vehicle comes in Third, with the Nissan Leaf registering 14 units, a somewhat disappointing result that might be explained by Nissan preferring to deliver the 30kWh version in larger markets.

Outside the podium, we have the BMW i3, with 12 units, all being of the BEV variety, followed by two Volvo's, the V60 Plug-In and the XC90 T8, with the swedish brand beating its volume record this month.

In the manufacturers ranking, Mitsubishi (32% Share) started the year in the leadership, followed by Mercedes (17%), this being the highest place for the german brand in the world, with Nissan and Volvo in Third (12%).

EV Distribution - Portugal January 2016

Last May, i made a small study regarding the distribution of EV's in my home country, based on used car websites and other sources, now i have updated it, remember this should only be seen as an indication of how electric vehicles are distributed across the portuguese territory.

For the information to be easier to understand for people not familiar with the local geography, i have divided the country in seven areas: Northwest (Porto, Aveiro, Braga and Viana do Castelo  districts), Northeast (Bragança, Vila Real, Guarda and Viseu), Center (Coimbra, Castelo Branco, Leiria and Santarém), Lisbon Metropolitan Area (Lisbon and Setubal), South (Portalegre, Evora, Beja and Faro), Azores and Madeira Islands.

Let's look at the distribution of the sample EV's:

Northwest

Following Lisbon Metropolitan area, this is the second area with most EV's, the Nissan Leaf is by far the most popular model, with 9 units, followed by the I-Miev triplets and Renault Zoe, with 4 units, and a big number of models with 3 units, half of them being of the PHEV variety, like the Volvo V60 Plug-In.

Northeast

Known for having the harshest conditions for EV's in mainland Portugal, with snow falling cold winters, 30ºC-something  summers and lots of big mountains to cross, it would be expected that PHEV's and especially the Outlander PHEV would be popular here, that's not the case, the most common EV is the Nissan Leaf, with 3 units, followed by the Renault Twizy(!), with two units and one Citroen C-Zero.

Center

There isn't a model of preference in this transitional North-South area, with several models collecting 3 units: Nissan Leaf, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Tesla Model S and Renault Zoe.

Lisbon Metropolitan Area

Lisbon is not only the nation's capital, but also the only place where with no effort you find EV's around the corner, with 40% of the total fleet of EV's being found in this small area. The most common EV is the Nissan Leaf, with 11 units, followed by the Renault Twizy and BMW i3, with 5 units. Lisbon also has the most heterogeneous offer, with 16 models represented, including an imported Think City.

South

In this area most ost EV's are concentrated in the tourist-friendly Algarve, with two Leafs and a number of models in single numbers, like the Renault Zoe, Twizy, Tesla Model S, or the Outlander PHEV.

But the scorching-hot (We are talking of 40ºC-something summers) Beja district also registers two EV's, one Nissan Leaf and a Mitsubishi I-Miev, so the most common EV in the South is the Nissan Leaf, with three units.

Azores and Madeira Islands
There is little info on these markets, there seems to be little reception to EV's, which is a shame, as mild climates and shorter distances are good conditions for plug-ins. Anyway, the most common EV here is the Renault Twizy, with 3 units (2 in Madeira, 1 in Azores), with a BMW i3 founding the way to the Azores (São Miguel Island, to be more precise).

Conclusions

If the Nissan Leaf might be considered a success story across mainland Portugal, there are a couple other cases worthy of mention, unlike what one might think, the Mitsu Outlander PHEV is more popular in the southern areas, where ice and snow are not a problem, Teslas are starting to be scattered across the country, but the reality is that small difusion EV's tend to be concentrated in Lisbon and in the NW (Braga-Porto-Aveiro) industrial belt.

Portugal December 2015

Has the Zoe finally reached its full potential?

Outlander PHEV Conquers #1

EV Sales are smoking hot in Portugal, with sales reaching 250 units in December, up five fold regarding the same month last year and selling more in one month than in the whole year of 2013...

With YTD sales ending at 1.305 units, up 260% regarding 2014, the EV Share ended at 0,61%, a significant departure from the 0,25% of last year, a rise not so spectacular as total sales, because the general market also grew in double digits.

Looking at the models ranking, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV was the surprising winner of the Best Seller title, growing from #4 and 39 units in 2014, to the current #1, with 229 units.

The remaining podium seats were for the Nissan Leaf (Second) and BMW i3 (Third), both of them benefiting from sales pushes by their respective brands in December, an aspect that local importers finally seem to have dedicated themselves to do.

The most flagrant example of this is the Renault Zoe, which has sold a record 63 units last month,a new all-time monthly record in this market, collecting only its third Monthly Best Seller trophy (The previous were in Dec. '14 and Oct. '15), an odd fact for a model that has been on sale for over two years, especially considering that Renault has the largest dealership network in Portugal and is the best selling automotive brand.

An interesting case is the Mercedes C350e, Rookie of the Year, ending the year in #5, meaning that fleet/company managers are finally adhering to the substantial company incentives.

In the manufacturers ranking, Nissan (19%) recovered just in time to win its third manufacturers title (2010, 2011 & 2015), reaching Renault (Best Seller in 2012, 2013 & 2014) as the brand with most trophies here.

Renault also took the profit from a great December to reach Second Place (18% share and 238 units), dropping Mitsubishi (18% and 235 units) to Third Place.

After 2015 having been the Year One AT (After Troika), it looks that the EV market has finally to grow significantly, so i would say some 2.500 units will be sold during 2016, with the EV Share staying firmly north of the 1% barrier. Regarding models, the Zoe finally looks poised to run for the leadership, looking to outsell the Outlander PHEV, BMW i3 and Nissan Leaf, while the Mercedes C350e and VW Passat GTE might play the dark horse card that Mitsubishi did so well in 2015.

Plug-Ins Versus Regular Hybrids

If we combine regular hybrid sales with plug-ins, only the Auris Hybrid and Yaris Hybrid, both from Toyota, are outselling plug-ins. If the Auris seems out of reach
for the moment, the Yaris Hybrid might see its second place in danger, especially if Renault starts to market the Zoe in a serious fashion.

Portugal October 2015

Has the Zoe finally reached its full potential?

Renault Zoe Excels Edition

EV Sales are rising in Portugal, something that is particularly visible in Lisbon's Metropolitan Area, with sales doubling regarding the same month last year, and with YTD sales now at 872 units (Will we reach 1.000 by year end?), the EV Share is steady at 0,57%, a significant departure from the 0,25% of last year.

Looking at the models ranking, the Mitsu Outlander PHEV stayed #1 in the YTD chart, but the surprise of the month belonged to another model...

The Renault Zoe sold a record 19 units, just the second time it reached the two digit area, collecting only its second Monthly Best Seller trophy ever (The first was in Dec. '14), an odd fact for a model that has been on sale for over two years, especially considering that Renault has the largest dealership network in Portugal and is the best selling automotive brand.

Does this mean Renault's sales force is finally willing to sell the Zoe?

As the song says: "Que sera, sera / Whatever will be, will be / The future's not ours to see / Que sera sera..."

In the manufacturers ranking, Mitsubishi (24% Share) is first, followed by Nissan (20%), Renault (19%, up 1%) and BMW (14%).

Portugal September 2015

Outlander PHEV New #1 Edition

EV Sales are rising fast in Portugal, with 99 units sold last month (Up 350% YoY!), and with YTD sales now at 803 units, the EV Share jumped again to a record 0,58%. With the projected final numbers of the year at around 1.100 units, plug-ins will sell more this year than all the previous years combined!

With such a high level of sales the ranking is bound to have several changes, the most important of them being the Mitsu Outlander PHEV reaching #1 both in the monthly ranking (For the fourth time in a row, by the way...) and also in the YTD chart, signaling the first time that a PHEV ever reaches such heights in Portugal.

A curious fact, considering the diferente EV history(1) that the neighboring Spain has, is that not only the japanese SUV also reached #1 in spanish lands last month, but currently both countries share the same top 4 positions (Outlander - Leaf - i3 - Zoe).

Looking at other changes, the VW Golf GTE climbed one position to #7, the Renault Kangoo ZE got its mojo back, jumping to #9, enabling it to recover the LCV Best seller title, but the Nissan e-NV200 / Evalia twins remain close, so this should be a thrilling race to the end.

The Audi A3 e-Tron was down to #13, while below it the Porsche Cayenne Plug-In climbed two positions to #15.

In the manufacturers ranking, Mitsubishi (25% Share) kicked out Nissan (20%) from the leadership, enabling the japanese carmaker to reach #1 for the first time ever, followed by Renault (18) and BMW (14%).

(1) - #1's in Portugal (Spain) throughout the years:

2011 - Nissan Leaf (Mitsubishi I-Miev);
2012 - Renault Twizy (Renault Twizy);
2013 - Renault Twizy (Nissan Leaf);
2014 - BMW i3 (Nissan Leaf);
2015 - Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV).

Portugal June 2015 (Full Ranking)

Records Edition

Government incentives for EV's are pulling the EV market to record heights, last June there were a record 129 EV's sold (Up 291% YoY), and with YTD sales tripling to a best ever 466 units, the EV Share jumped to a record 0,46%.

With such a high level of sales it's not surprising that June has brought a number of records, it was the first time that more than 100 units were sold in a single month, the Mitsu Outlander PHEV registered 44 units, surprisingly breaking the monthly volume record for a single model (It was also the first time a PHEV was best-seller), while the Pre-Troika volume record of 99 units set by the Nissan Leaf in 2011 has been broken by the same Leaf this month, with six months left to increase the new record...

Looking at the models ranking, the Nissan Leaf has seen its lead reduced (28 units vs 37 last month), with a new and ambitious runner-up in the shape of the Outlander PHEV ready to question Nissan's hatch leadership in the near future.

Despite record sales in June, the BMW i3 was down to Third, while below it the surprising Toyota Prius Plug-In is having its best year ever in Portugal, it is #6 with 21 sales, already above its personal best set in 2013 with 14 units, is Toyota's portuguese importer secretly doing generous discounts?

In the manufacturers ranking, Nissan is on the podium with 25% share, followed by Renault (20%) and Mitsubishi (18%).

Looking at sales as a whole, it would be interesting to compare the several categories of plug-ins with the general performance of the auto market, as such, in a general market with a 33% growth rate, Passenger BEV's are growing 146%, electric LCV's 220% and Passenger PHEV's 293%(!), while regular hybrids have a less spectacular but still satisfying 75% growth rate.

Following a reader suggestion, i made a small study regarding the distribution of EV's in my home country, this is a small sample (70 units) of the 1.300-something EV's registered in Portugal, based on used car websites, so this should only be seen as an indication of how electric vehicles are distributed across the portuguese territory.

For the information to be easier to understand for people not familiar with the local geography, i have divided the country in seven areas: Northwest (Porto, Aveiro, Braga and Viana do Castelo  districts), Northeast (Bragança, Vila Real, Guarda and Viseu), Center (Coimbra, Castelo Branco, Leiria and Santarém), Lisbon Metropolitan Area (Lisbon and Setubal), South (Portalegre, Evora, Beja and Faro), Azores and Madeira.

But let's look at the distribution of the best selling EV's:

Nissan Leaf

From the snowy mountains of the Northeast to the scorching hot South, the most common EV in Portugal is present across mainland Portugal, being the only EV present in the harsh climate (Cold winters and hot summers) of the Northeast.

Here's how the japanese car is distributed: NW - 4 units; NE - 3; CT - 2; LIS - 4; SO - 2.

Mitsubishi I-Miev triplets (Includes Peugeot iOn and Citroen C-Zero)

It's also spreaded across the mainland, but in this case it is visible the concentration in the major cities, with half of the 10 units concentrated in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, with an additional three distributed among the NW Braga-Porto-Aveiro industrial cluster and the remaining two distributed by the Center and South.

Renault Twizy

The french quadricycle is quite popular among the more tourism-friendly areas as a rental car, that's why it's present across the seaside areas and in the Azores and Madeira islands.

Here's the sample distribution: LIS - 3 units; CT - 2; MAD - 2; SO - 1; AZ - 1; NW - 1.

BMW i3

Having just two i-dealerships in Portugal (One in Oporto and the other in Lisbon), it isn't surprising that these hot hatches are concentrated in those areas, with three i3 in Lisbon (And the two existing i8's) and two in the northern capital.

There is also one i3 confirmed in the Azores islands, in Ponta Delgada (Regional capital), probably imported from the mainland, and it should be a blast to drive there, with that territory being fertile on narrow mountain roads, a place where the little german car excels.

Renault Zoe

Another car concentrated in the two larger metropolitan areas, with three in Porto (NW) and two in Lisbon, with the last one living further South, in the tourist-friendly Algarve.

It should be noted that the french carmaker has the largest dealership network in Portugal and the fact that these cars are concentrated in urban areas only reinforces the feeling that most of their dealerships aren't really prepared/willing to sell electric vehicles to the general public.

Others

In the more recent arrivals / smaller diffusion models, there are a couple cases worthy of mention, the five Outlander PHEV are more popular in the southern areas (two in the Center, one in Lisbon and two in the South), while the two V60 Plug-In are concentrated in the Northwest, but the reality is that EV's sold in small numbers tend to concentrate in Lisbon, like is the case of the  Smart Fortwo ED, with three out of four living in the Capital's Metropolitan Area and the remaining unit living up in the Northwest (Braga).

It would be interesting to have data on the Plug-In Porches, but looking at the general picture of other high-end EV's (The two BMW i8  reside in Lisbon and there also two Teslas in Lisbon, while the other is registered the Center of the country), it is possible to extract that the expensive plug-ins are also concentrated around Lisbon.

Together with the data above mentioned, this means that the NW industrial belt (Braga-Porto-Aveiro) is behind the curve regarding Lisbon in EV acceptance (16 EV's in NW vs 27 in LIS).

Portugal May 2015 (Full Ranking)

"Oh Happy Day...."

Back to the Good Old Days Edition

After the end of the Troika Years (2012-14), government incentives for EV's have returned and it shows, there were 322 EV's sold this year, with a record 94 registrations set last month, pulling the EV Share north of 0,4% for the first time ever.

With sales tripling regarding last year, it's not surprising that May already presents comparable numbers with the whole of 2014, both in total numbers (322 vs 362) as with single models, with the current Best Seller having 79 registrations, while last year #1 only sold 72, while the Pre-Troika record of 99 units set by the Nissan Leaf in 2011 is only a couple of months away of being beaten. As a side note, this is the oldest record of its kind in the world...

The EV Share doesn't show such a significant increase (0,42% vs 0,25%), because the overall market is also growing fast.

Looking at the models ranking, the Nissan Leaf is back at its Glory Days (It was Best Seller in 2010 and 2011), leading the ranking and already selling more in five months than in the whole of 2014. The BMW i3 was pushed down one position to #2, with 42 sales YTD.

In #3 we have a surprise, the Mitsu Outlander PHEV registers an impressive performance, selling 16 units last month, a record for a Plug-In Hybrid allowing it  a Second Place in the May ranking, a first for a PHEV. This kind of technology is making important progresses in Portugal, and with the recent arrival of the A3 e-Tron and Golf GTE cousins, expect the 29% share of plug-in hybrids to grow even higher.

Looking at slow sellers, the Smart Fortwo ED is suffering from the Generation Change (12 units last year vs 3 now), while the Panamera Plug-in has seen its sales migrate to its Cayenne brother (3 vs 1).

In the manufacturers ranking, Nissan is first, with 25% Share, up 5%, making it the manufacturer to benefit most with the government grant (4.500€), with the japanese manufacturer offering an additional 4.500€ discount on the Leaf, currently it is possible to buy a brand new electric Leaf starting at 16.990€(!).

With this kind of aggressive pricing, one wonders why portuguese buyers aren't taking the chance to buy them massively...

In Second on the manufacturers ranking, we have Renault (24%), while BMW dropped to #3, with 15% Share.

Portugal March 2015

"Aleluia!" Springtime Records- Portuguese Edition

Finally the 4.500 euro government grant seems to be working, as well as the companies tax exemptions, after two so-so months, March brought a record 61 EV's sold, with more than half being Nissan Leaf's, which it isn't a surprise, given that the japanese brand is agressively pushing its electric toddler (It's now 4 years old), with prices starting at 16.990€! *

Looking at the rest of the models ranking, there are two electric stars fighting for Number Two (i3 and Zoe), while the Mitsu i-Miev shows up in the ranking for the first time this year, registering three units, as much as it did in the whole of 2014...

Looking at the brands ranking, Nissan jumps to the leadership (It finished Third last year), with 41% share, followed by BMW (17%) and Renault (16%).

* - Including Government Grant

Portugal February 2015

Leaf back at #1

There were 26 EV's sold last month, mounting the full year numbers to 54 units, which is a bit of an anti-climax, because although sales are up 46% regarding last year, i hoped that with the new 4.500 euro government grant, sales would skyrocket and put this market among the stars of this year. It doesn't seem to be the case.

Looking at the models ranking, the two electric stars of the Renault-Nissan Alliance cars (Leaf and Zoe) benefited the most with the subsidy, with the japanese dethroning the BMW i3 from the leadership and the french car reaching the Third spot.

A final reference to the Opel Ampera, it has sold in February 2 units, which the same amount of sales it had in the whole of 2014...
