New Models for 2017 (& their impact)

A Segment (City Cars)

Image result for Renault Twingo ZE
Renault Twingo ZE

With the five best selling models in this segment coming from China, the upcoming Smart ForTwo / ForFour ED models and Renault Twingo ZE will have a hard time to reach a Podium seat, let alone winning this class, so 2017 should be decided between the Chinese models, maybe between a Zotye model and the Chery eQ.

B Segment (Subcompacts)

Image result for 2017 nissan micra ev
Nissan Micra

The promised EV version of the new Nissan Micra will face stiff competition next year, starting with its Renault Zoe relative, with the current Best Seller, the BMW i3, expected to receive a facelift and yet another battery upgrade, the Japanese hatch won't be able to reach these two, but it could have a small shot at stealing the Third Place from the BAIC E-Series.

C Segment (Compacts)

Image result for toyota prius prime solar panel
Toyota Prius Prime

The heart of the market will be a hard fought battleground, with plenty of new models with Best Seller ambitions, like the Chevrolet Bolt/Opel Ampera-e (After a long thought, i have decided to place it here, as it is more than just an MPV and more spacious than B-Segment cars), the facelifted Nissan Leaf, the Toyota Prius Prime...Without forgetting the Chinese outsiders (BYD Qin, BAIC EU260).

With such strong competitors, one thing is certain, whoever wins this class, will surely win also the 2017 Best Selling EV title.

D Segment (Midsize)

Image result for tesla model 3
Tesla Model 3

The Next Big Thing, the EV that everyone is talking about, will land in 2017, but mass production will only start in the following year, so the Tesla Model 3 won't make a big impact this year. The Ford Fusion Energi will probably collect another Best Seller title in 2017, but it will have to keep an eye on the German midsizers, particularly the increasingly successful BMW 330e.

E Segment (Full Size)

BMW 530e

The German Autobahn-bruisers finally grew a (Small) plug, with the recent Mercedes E350e and future BMW 530e trying to put a fight to the all-conquering Tesla Model S, but if they reach one fifth of the sales of the American, it will be a job well done.

As for the big Volvo's, the S/V90 PHEV will be happy if they beat the German models.

F Segment (Full Size Luxury)

Porsche Panamera

A lot of new stuff here, we will have an upgraded Mercedes S500e, the recent BMW 740e, the new Porsche Panamera PHEV, Cadillac CT6 PHEV, the upcoming Audi A8 PHEV...

If this year the title is headed for the Mercedes, next year it will be an open question, please make your bets...

SUV / CUV

Image result for BYD Song ev
BYD Song EV

After a slew of new plug-in SUV's and Crossovers in 2016, this year seems quieter, the current leaders BYD Tang and Outlander PHEV will probably be beaten by a Tesla Model X in full swing, while the important BYD Song and Yuan Crossovers will also make an impact in the class, possibly running for a Top 5 spot.

MPV / Minivans

Image result for Chrysler Pacifica hybrid
Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

The Pacifica Hybrid has a huge sales potential, but will depend on the FCA will to sell and make it, if the oldtimer BYD e6 sustains momentum in 2017 (It has sold some 20k in '16), then the Chrysler won't reach the Best Seller status, but it should be enough to run head-to-head with the BMW 225xe Active Tourer for Second Place, all while leaving the Ford C-Max Energi out of the Podium.

LCV / Vans

Image result for Nissan e-NV200
Nissan e-NV200

In a segment dominated by just two models, the Renault Kangoo ZE and Nissan e-NV200 / Evalia, and with both receiving the same upgraded battery (Around 40 kWh), things should remain the same as in 2016, with both models running against each other for this class title.

Sports Cars / Convertibles

Image result for bmw i8 roadster
BMW i8 Spyder

After putting to shame the little competition it had over these last three years, the BMW i8 is almost synonymous with this category, for 2017 it is said to receive some upgrades, namely a 10 kWh battery, more power and the long awaited Spyder version.

Pick-up Trucks

Image result for Tesla Truck
Tesla Model T????

With the end of the Mitsubishi Minicab Miev Truck, of which were made some 1.000 units over a four year span, this highly profitable class is now orphan of plug-ins, with the Best Selling Electric Pick-up Truck still dating back for the Dinosaur Era (Ford Ranger EV, with 1.705 units delivered from 1998 to 2002).

It seems we all have to wait for Tesla to shake things up with a Tesla Model T in 2020...

an ability we didn't have to pay to have designed into the F-17, that came in handy and saved lives, a sonic boom

in March 2003, two F-16 pilots were called to assist 52 British special operators surrounded by 500 Iraqi troops — meaning the friendlies were outnumbered almost 10 to 1.

The Iraqi troops were pressing the attack, pinning the Brits down and preparing to overrun them.

Thinking fast, one of the pilots climbed to high altitude and then went into a dive, quickly building up sonic energy around his plane as he neared the ground with the massive amount of sound energy surrounding his cockpit, he broke the sound barrier and pointed the bulk of the energy at the ground where he believed the Iraqi troops to be.

Lynch pulled up a mere 3,000 feet from the ground, sending the massive sonic boom against the troops below.

Veterans to Technicians Program

Veterans to Technicians aims to connect highly skilled former military personnel with challenging and rewarding new careers as Audi certified service technicians, service consultants, shop foremen and parts specialists in dealerships across the country.

Veterans with proven automotive skills are prioritized, though the program also provides opportunities for veterans with experience in power generation, aviation, welding, electronics, hydraulic systems and maritime systems.

Veterans are ideal employees for Audi dealerships because they are viewed as a natural fit for the brand: the skills, experience, maturity, integrity and work ethic they bring to Audi ultimately translates into a top-level service experience for the customer. These skills are especially valuable today as Audi seeks more technicians to match record product growth.

Sources differ on it's originality, but this Bengal Charger is a good reminder that in the muscle car era, dealerships made some of their own models cooler than the factory

this is Rich Grushinski from Scott Township, PA and Chrysler Power Magazine says it's an original, but the local newspaper says it is a tribute

The second generation Charger was all-new for 1968 and so were the Cincinnati Bengals. Dodge dealer Tom Kneer decided to create his own special edition Dodge Charger in the team’s colors and learned from the team HQ that the team’s uniforms would be black with orange and white stripes and helmets would be bright orange with black “Bengal” lettering.

So he placed the order with Dodge for 50 1968 Chargers. Tom scanned through the paint samples in Dodge’s color guide and discovered an orange used for Michigan state fleet vehicles that he dubbed Tiger Orange.

Black vinyl tops and dual black stripes around the trunk rounded out Tom’s specifications for his Bengal Charger. Most cars were ordered with the 318 or 383, none were ordered with the 426 Hemi.
He had a few 6 cylinder cars built for marketing purposes and an estimated 10 - 12 R/Ts.

Because Tom was purchasing so many cars, Chrysler agreed to throw in the black Sport Stripes for free. In 1968, Chrysler put Sport Stripes on the Charger R/T only. Since most of the Bengals were not R/Ts, obviously, an exception was made. For this reason and because they were free, the stripe does not appear on the broadcast sheet but instead was part of the special order processing along with the orange paint.

Tom ordered 100 chromed  “Bengal Charger” fender badges, but no other body modifications were made to the car. The fender badges were made in Cincinnati and were mounted on the cars when they arrived at the dealership.

The ad mentions that 30 cars are available out of the 50 that were built, as some were already chosen for specific customers, like the Bengals team owner Barry Buse and the quarterback received one to drive for a year.

An article in the January 2002 edition of Muscle Car Review states that only three of the unique Chargers have been accounted for in recent years. The simple way to see if a 68 Charger MIGHT be a Bengal, is to look at the paint code. It must be a 999.

Jeff Warner, a Central Ohio native, discovered the first one in 1992, his particular BENGAL is also uncommonly loaded with options. Galen stated; "This is one of, if not the highest optioned '68 Charger I have ever seen! Whoever ordered this car must have said, order everything on the list!"

https://tommyscarblog.com/2012/10/30/1968-dodge-charger/
http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,32703.0.html.I
http://www.hotrod.com/articles/giant-mopar-gallery-carlisle-chrysler-nats/104-1968-dodge-bengal-charger-front-profile/

Special Order "999" paint codes were codes assigned for a vehicle for paint colors that were not officially available for that model vehicle for a given year. When a car line was planned and introduced, a number of colors were designated as being available for that car. Dealer information and paint chips were distributed, assembly lines were readied with paint mixes and instructions for the paint departments for the identified set of paint codes.

The way a 999 car was order was that any one with a fleet account (dealerships, or large purchasing agents) could order any Ditzler color for any vehicle for some additional small fee ($75-100). When the 999 order was placed, some notation as to which actual color was written on the order. The factory would have sent the car down the assembly line with papers that also reflected that special paint color.

While the parameters of the 999 special order paint mean that there were probalby some unique orders that mades a "one off", for some years, there were common 999 orders. 1968-1969 999 Orange cars would be one of these commonly order special colors. There were probably a few hundred 999 Orange cars built in 1968 and 1969. For 1968 and the beginning of 1969, these were Omaha Orange which is the same orange used to paint early 1964 race hemi's (Ditzler code DRA60436). At some point in the 1969 model year, the special order 999 Omaha Orange became the EK2 Vitamin C Orange which would be standard color for 1970. The is per a 4/7/69 TSB stating that begining approx. Feb 1, 1969, EK2 "Vitamin C" Orange would be available for Belvedere models. http://www.autohobbydigest.com/999.html

4 of the known 999 cars that were not Bengals were painted silver, a Petty Blue, a Rallye Green and Bahama Yellow.

Clair says:
I own the 1968 Bengal R/T. I found it just outside of Hazard Kentucky in 1993. It was made to look like a Dukes car; when I went to look at it, it had little football helmet stickers in the back window and had the Bengal Charger emblems on the fenders. When I popped the hood and seen the 999 code, I knew there was something special about the car, I just found the only R/T that was known to exist. It had the build sheet behind the back seat. It coded out as 440 with AC, automatic with white interior, and the sheet said SPECIAL HANDLING JOB at the bottom of it.

The other 3 Bengals all have black interior. I took it to the Nats right after I bought it (1993)  and then tucked it away for thirteen years while raising kids and building a house. Then had the car disassembled and bead blasted but ran out of motivation and it's just sitting waiting for NOS parts since 2006. As for the other 3, the 383 car was recently restored and is in Texas, the 318 car with the low miles was sold to a guy in Missouri, and the 318 car in Saskatchewan Canada was nicely redone into a R/T clone. That's the one next to the jet.

These badges are for the 1972, and the 1968 Bengals, and were pulled out of the trash by a dealership employee in 1976 when the dealership had a thorough going over before getting sold.

did you hear about the automatic transmission they tested on the M38 Jeep during the 50s for the civilians? It had a push start ability

the Borg Warner T 90 was found to not be civilian friendly, so an effort was made to develop an automatic trans that would mount into the small Jeep.

The available space was one big problem, but Allison ( a division of GM since 1929) wanted to be the supplier for potential millions in profits if they snagged the contract to supply the transmission.

Their prototype was named the "Allison Automatic Torque Converter", and the 2nd oil pump at the rear of the trans allowed for it to be push started.

The prototype Jeeps were sent to Aberdeen Proving Grounds, but the auto trans was terrible, and broke down a lot. A quart of oil was leaking, on average, every 800 miles.

Can Am 1966, it's easy to understand why those who were winning the series, were in the lead

After Riverside and onto Las Vegas (5 down 1 to go)  it was clear that the driver/engineers were the only ones in contention for the championship.

How about that, engineers that were into racing. Phil Hill, Dan Gurney, Jim Hall, John Surtees, Bruce McLaren, and Mark Donohue.

I wonder if anything similar has happened in any other race series in one year, that the best in the field were all full time professionals in the same other career field outside racecar driving?

the only driver I ever heard of that owed the team driver to not drive!

Roger Penske was smart, and experienced, and put a buy out clause in the contract he signed drivers up with... and when Chris Amon bailed before the 1966 season started, as he was a driver for Scuderia Ferrrari in F1as a second stringer, when Bandini was killed in Monaco, and Enzo called him up to primary. Amon had to bail on Penske, but not without paying for the inconvenience.

Another reason to respect the Chaparral in 1967

Unlike the other car makers, the Jim Hall racing operation wasn't based in the middle of a race car building center. (think Los Angeles, Indianapolis). It was a small outfit in Texas, where there was no racing infrastructure, or resources.

It was competing with Ferrari, Lola, etc... and here is the part to be impressed by... the 2F Chaparral was the fastest lap at Sebring, Nurburgring, Spa, and Daytona. Plus it took the pole position at Monza and Nurbrgring

But though it was the fastest, it was doomed by a lousy Chevrolet bearing in the tourque converter transaxles.

2016 in Review

2016, also known as  Year Six of the Modern Age of Electric Cars is about to end, so i took the time to review some of the most important facts this year:

Image result for Tesla Model 3
Model 3: 9 months away from hitting the roads, but already the most important EV in History

The EV Future will be bright (But it's not here yet)

If there is a phrase that sums up the general feeling in the Plug-in scene in 2016, it's the one above, starting with the production-spec Chevrolet Bolt Detroit presentation in January, the Tesla Model 3 earthquake in March, 31st, and ending with several announcements of long range EV's throughout the year, the fact is that buyers had a taste of the Second Generation EV's, but all they could buy during 2016 were First Generation BEV's / PHEV's and a couple of 1.5G models (Chevrolet Volt II, Hyundai Ioniq Electric), which lead to a Osborne effect in many western markets, with buyers preferring to wait for the upcoming models, leading to a drop in sales of First Generation electric cars.

BYD Song plug-in: Announced for 2016, now scheduled for 2017

BYD Remained Number One (But failed to amaze us)

After watching BYD sales surge three-fold and reaching the Best Selling plug-in manufacturer status in 2015, one would think that sales would at least double in 2016, but this wasn't the case, with around 100.000 units sold this year, or 64% growth, it felt like when Messi won the Pichichi Trophy with 45 goals, yes it was impressive, but the previous year he had scored 50...

Having won seven Monthly Best Seller Trophies (January, April, May, June, July, August, October), and with a 30.000 units lead over the Second Placed Tesla, the Best Selling Manufacturer trophy is more than deserved, but this was more due to regularity (Five consecutive months at 10.000-something) than outlandish results, with the two most impressive results of the year going to Tesla (13.394 units last September) and Zotye (12.318 in October). Using the Messi analogy, it was like despite the 45 goals, not once did the Argentinean player scored a poker during the whole season.

The model diversification (Tang, e5, etc) occurred in 2015, didn't followed in 2016, with only the BYD Qin EV300 reinforcing the lineup, while the Song and Yuan Crossovers and the T3 Van remained in the sideline.

Will they appear in 2017? They'd better do, as 2017 in the Chinese EV Market will be even more fierce, with foreign carmakers forced to join the local EV party and on a global level, there will be other OEM's (Tesla, BMW, BAIC) targeting 100k or more EV's for 2017.

You'll better step up, BYD...

Image result for baic eu260
BAIC EU260: A rising star
China is Rising - Third Chapter

2016 was Year Three for the Chinese EV market, with foreign makers still neglecting the Chinese EV market, where the local brands have 95% of this booming market to themselves, this allowed the Chinese EV makers global share to rise from 31% in 2015 to 43% in 2016, with China rapidly becoming the place to be, not only it is the largest EV market in the World, but also the fastest growing one, volume-wise.

Even mentioning EV Share, China is making giant steps, their plug-in share is now at 1.4%, an important improvement over the 0.9% of 2015 and already above markets like the USA or Europe, both close to 1%.

If BYD and BAIC are frequently mentioned here, others are also contributing for this unstoppable wave, like Zotye (#6 in the global manufacturers ranking), SAIC Roewe (#12), Zhidou (#13) or Chery (#15).

An interesting trend is the steady climb of chinese cars in the global ranking, if in 2013 the best positioned chinese model was outside the Top 10 (#11 - Chery QQ3 EV), in the following year there were two (#7 - BYD Qin & #10 - Kandi EV) in the Top 10, 2015 witnessed three models in the Best Sellers ranking (#4 - BYD Qin; #6 - Kandi Panda EV; #8 - BYD Tang), while in 2016 there are four (#3 - BYD Tang; #7 - BYD Qin; #9 - BAIC E-Series EV; #10 - BAIC EU260) models, with the Tang becoming the first Chinese model to reach a Podium seat.

Expect for 2017 to reinforce this trend, maybe with five Chinese models in the Top 10?

I'm Too Sexy (To Surf the Wave)

Sometimes Tesla behavior reminds that of a certain Right Said Fred hit, with a near cult-like following from its fans and a Model 3 success that surpassed Elon's wildest dreams, it would be more than enough to keep every other OEM happy and they would just surf the wave and prepare for the Model 3 goldmine.

Not Tesla. During 2016, they did a Model S facelift (Ok, they had to do something about that nose), improved their P90D/90D versions, replaced the 70 version for the 60/75 units, which together with the QA issues of the Model X, created unnecessary production constraints in Q1 & Q2.

As the year progressed and the Q3 was turning out to be memorable, they thought: "This is becoming boring, we haven't presented anything awesome in the past couple of months, so what can we do? I know, the P90D is passé, let's do the P100D! And add the Second Gen. Autopilot!"

With another two jaw-dropping additions, they managed to increase even further their sexyness-awesomeness, with the minor detail of screwing up the production plan of Q4...

With all this, the new Power packs and all the rest that's going on (Gigafactory, Model 3 tooling...), being COO of Tesla must be one of the toughest jobs on Earth.

Then again, Tesla has to keep their cult followers happy, right?

BMW steps up from other German Automakers

Following on the Volkswagen Dieselgate and Tesla's increasingly larger appetite for premium customers, German automakers joined the EV bandwagon with both feet, announcing big plans for the future, but the fact is that in 2016, only BMW made the necessary step-up.

In the BMW i-line models, the i3 model finally received a decent battery, with 33kWh, pulling sales to record levels and making it the cornerstone of its plug-in strategy.

The German automaker also launched the 740e plug-in hybrid, which was an instant hit in its class, helping BMW to have the most extensive plug-in lineup of all, while all other PHEV's were also beating sales records, which allowed it to become the Third Best Selling Plug-in maker in 2016, the first among established OEMs;

German automakers global share remained stable at 19%, with BMW (8% Share) surpassing Volkswagen (5%) as the major Teutonic EV maker, with Mercedes in Third, with 2% share, Audi in Fourth (2%), followed by Porsche (1%) and Smart (0%), with BMW being the only brand to win share (+2%) regarding last year.

Global Sales Continue to Grow

After a slow start, EV sales picked up pace, now expected to surpass the 750.000 units, after the 140k of 2012, low-200k in 2013, 320k in 2014, and 550k last year.

Growth Is All Around

While Norway continues to be the poster-child for EV Share (29% Share!) and China the King of Volume (Over 100.000 units more than in 2015!), others are also making themselves noted, like Belgium (1.76% in '16 vs 0.78% in '15) or Austria (1.6% vs 0.6%), while several countries in the Scandinavian region, probably inspired by the Norwegian case-study, are growing at surprising rates and reaching high market shares, like Sweden (3.7%), Iceland (4.2%) on Finland (1.2%).

Other markets finally had their Year One in 2016, like Luxembourg (0,61%), Lithuania (0,40% vs 0,04% last year) or Romania (0.14%).

Despite the general positive trend, there were some slowing markets this year, with the largest being Japan, that for the second consecutive year is falling significantly, with its current market share (0.45%) far from the 2014 peak, when it was flirting (0.98%) with the 1% barrier.

Other two markets dropping significantly regarding 2015 are the Netherlands (3.4% vs 9.3%) and Denmark (0.6% vs 2.3%), but in these cases the culprit is easy to identify, as fiscal changes made EV's less appealing to local buyers.

Also of importance is the dissemination of plug-ins into countries not associated with EV's, like Malaysia (Some 106 units), UAE (283 sales), Sri Lanka (993 units!) or Ecuador (20 Twizzies).
