The Honda Civic was Canada's best-selling car in 2016, the 19th consecutive year of passenger car leadership for the Civic. 

Despite arriving in newly launched tenth-gen form, despite the addition of a helpful hatchback bodystyle at the end of the year, Civic sales slid 1% in 2016.

Yet the top-selling Honda's share of the car market nevertheless increased as Canadian demand for cars continued to shrink. In 2015, 9.1% of the cars sold in Canada were Honda Civics. In 2016, that figure jumped to 9.8%.

Rare was the car that didn't sell less often in 2016 than in 2015. Among Canada's 20 top cars, only four bucked the trend. Only one of the top 14 cars – the Hyundai Elantra – generated greater sales activity in 2016 than in 2015. 

The Toyota Camry, ranked tenth overall, was Canada's top-selling midsize car. The 19th-ranked Mercedes-Benz C-Class was tops among premium brand nameplates. Ranked 24th, the Ford Mustang led all sports/sporty cars.

To be fair to the car sector, as a whole, it's useful to be reminded of the sharp decline in car sales at the Volkswagen brand, tainted in late 2014 by a diesel emissions scandal. Subtract Volkswagen from the equation and Canadian car sales in 2016 didn't fall 7.3% but rather dipped 6.5%.

Sales data for brands such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Rolls-Royce are unfortunately not broken down by model. ANDC estimates say sales for those brands in 2016 were 216, 175, and 86 units, respectively. It is believed that Tesla sold 2034 new vehicles during the first ten months of 2016.
