Small SUV Sales In America - December 2016 & 2016 Year End

America's four best-selling utility vehicles, small crossovers all of them, each reported all-time record U.S. sales in calendar year 2016.

The Honda CR-V, at the end of its fourth-generation's tenure, rose 3% to 357,335 units. The Toyota RAV4, for much of 2016 the top-selling utility vehicle in America, jumped 12% to 352,154 units.

The third-ranked Nissan Rogue, which topped the sector thanks to a 53% uptick in December, jumped 15% in 2016 to 329,904 units. And the Ford Escape, the last SUV/crossover to take the best seller's crown from the CR-V, posted a modest 0.2% uptick to 307,069 sales.

Together, the quartet added 92,000 sales to the U.S. auto industry's ledger in 2016, a hugely meaningful improvement given the industry's overall 56,000-unit increase.

Seemingly, the rapid growth of subcompact crossover sales hasn't impeded their bigger brethren from making meaningful gains. 

Subcompact CUVs, led by the Jeep Renegade and GM's Buick and Chevrolet twins – Encore and Trax – jumped 27% to 537,609. 

Keep in mind, on their own, the CR-V and RAV4 sold more than 700,000 copies in 2016.
