New Models for the Rest of 2015

New Models for the Second Half of the Year

Pure electrics have been resisting quite well to the new wave of PHEV's, mostly thanks to Tesla and the Nissan Leaf, but in the second half of year more Plug-in Hybrids will arrive, and PHEV Share should rebound, not only the refreshed Chevrolet Volt will make its impact, but there's a bundle of new PHEV's coming, particularly SUV's, and only one pure electric to help balance the numbers:

BYD Tang - The manufacturer claims this SUV has even more demand than the Qin, so the chinese  EV leadership should belong to it in the future. Sales target for this year: 15.000.

Chevrolet Volt II - Pushing the plug-in sales boundaries (only) in America, the second generation of the Volt could reach some 10.000 units this year and then step up in 2016.

Tesla Model X - Its production has been pushed back so many times that people wonder if it will land this year, after all there isn't still an official picture of the Real Deal, but having faith that deliveries do start as promised, in September, expect small numbers in the beginning, as Tesla will watch closely how the Falcon Wings Doors behave. Sales target for 2015: 4.000 units.

Volkswagen Passat GTE - There hasn't been many plug-ins in this particular segment, but the recent arrival of the Mercedes C-Class PHEV is just the first of many new players preparing to enter the game, the Passat GTE is another addition, based on the success of the regular Passat and of the Golf GTE, i think this has all the ingredients to replicate their success and reach some 3.000 units.

Hyundai Sonata Plug-In - The Korean automaker has arrived late to the plug-in train, is it ready to pick-up on the lost time? The Sonata PHEV is the first model on which we can evaluate if the Korean brand is going plug-in for real or not. Kia has only sold 1.500 Soul EV this year, so we'd better not expect a lot from these guys...Sales target: 1.500 units

BMW X5 Plug-In - The fourth plug-in of the BMW stable, it will be a strong contender for the Premium SUV PHEV trophy, but the Cayenne has already a big lead for this years trophy. Sales target: 1.500 units.

Volvo XC90 Plug-In - The regular XC90 is having an overwhelming reception and the T8 (PHEV) version waiting list is getting longer and longer...If Volvo can make them fast enough, i would say that some 1.500 units could be registered this year.

Audi Q7 e-Tron - Another addition to the Premium barge large SUV niche, Audi is looking to replicate the plug-in A3 in a XXL format. Sales target: 1.500 units.

BYD Song and Yuan - These smaller plug-in SUV's were shown earlier this year and the question remains: Will they arrive in time to land this year? If so, will they sell in significant numbers? My guess is a December launch, just in time to enter this year ranking.

Markets Roundup December 2014 (Special Edition)

I. A Year Ago - Hits and Misses

A year ago, i made some forecasts regarding 2014, let's see how they worked out:

USA

* Leaf will be #1 - Hit;

* Ford will fight for #1 in the brands ranking - It was #2, slightly ahead of Chevrolet, but 7% behind Nissan;

* 130-150.000 sales for the US EV market - 119.804 units, slightly below the prediction boundaries.

Japan

* Close fight between Nissan Leaf and the Outlander PHEV - Not really, Mitsu as a brand stayed 2.000 units behind Nissan's hatch;

36-39.000 units - 32.418 sales, big disappointment.

France

* Renault Zoe #1 - How hard could it be to forecast this one?

15-18.000 units - 16.294 sales, the final push allowed this one to hit the spot.

Germany

* BMW i3 and VW e-Up! and e-Golf running for #1 with the Smart ED - The i3 won the Best Seller trophy, but the other two stayed behind Smart, all while being also outrun by the foreigner Renault Zoe.

* 10.000 sales for the German EV Market - 13.242 sales, (finally) well above expectations.

Netherlands

* Volvo and Mitsubishi will fight for #1 - The Outlander PHEV was responsible for 50% of all plug-in sales here, while Volvo was Second with 21% share. Big difference;

* Somewhere between 15-19.000 units sold in the Dutch EV market - 15.270 sales, not a disappointment, but nothing to brag about...

Norway

* Close fight between the Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model S, VW e-Golf and Mitsu Outlander PHEV - The Leaf (7 times monthly Best-Seller) proved to be pretty resilient, resisting the Model S (3 times Best Seller) and the e-Golf (2 times) attacks and ending in the leadership, with 24% share, 4% ahead of the american car and double the sales of the e-Golf. As for the SUV, it was the best-selling PHEV, but only #6 in the ranking, plug-in hybrids still have a long way to go in Norway;

* Volkswagen will win the Manufacturers Title - Hit;

* EV Share between 12-14% in Norway - 13,93%, coming along the best expectations.

China

* BYD Qin #1 - Only Kandi could threaten the Qin leadership, and even then, it didn't scared too much;

* Somewhere between 23-28.000 units sold in the Dutch EV market - Some 60.000 units, the Big Forecast Miss Of The Year, did anyone saw this coming?

II. Engines of Growth

* By EV Share

One of them is pretty easy to discover, after all, the Norwegian EV performance is profusely documented (13,93% in '14 vs 6,10% in '13), but there were other surprises, like Sweden (1,66% in '14 vs 0,71% in '13) or Estonia (1,57% vs 0,68%). But the most impressive market is Iceland, with the EV Share in Iceland jumping from 0,21% in 2012, to 0,94% in '13, to 2,71 last year! With all the hydro-thermal energy they have and the small distances associated to an island, EV sales in Iceland should continue to grow exponentially and maybe become something like a Second Norway...

* By Volume

EV Share is important, but even more fundamental is the volume increase, and in this case China made all the headlines, with 40.000 more units being sold in 2014 than in the previous year...

The USA progress (A 20K increase) looks small by comparison, but it was still the Second largest, ahead of Norway (From 9 to 20K), and the surprising UK (4 to 14K!), even Germany progressed significantly, with an increase of Seven Thousand units.

III. 2014 vs 2013

Let's compare #1's of this year with the ones of 2013:

Volt - Canada (Winner since 2011)

Leaf - USA (In '13 - Volt); Japan (Like in 2011 and 2013); Norway (Like in 2012 and 2013); Spain (Like in '13); Denmark (Like in '13); Italy (Twizy in '13); Estonia (Leaf in '13); Iceland (Leaf); Ireland (Leaf since 2011).

Outlander PHEV - Netherlands (Like in 2013); UK (Leaf won in 2013); Sweden (V60 Plug-In in '13); Australia (Leaf in '13); Finland (V60 Plug-In); New Zealand (I-Miev).

Zoe - France (Like in 2013); Austria (Like in '13).

BMW i3 - Germany (In '13 - Smart Fortwo ED); Hong Kong (Fluence ZE in '13); Portugal (Twizy); Czech Republic (Leaf); Poland (Leaf).

Model S - Switzerland (In '13 - Zoe); Belgium (V60 Plug-in).

Renault Samsung SM3 ZE - South Korea (Like in '13).
BYD Qin - China (In '13 - QQ3 EV).

Examining this, we can that Chevy Volt only resists in Canada, losing the USA for the Leaf, but the japanese hatch loses the UK and Australia for the Outlander PHEV, Mitsu's SUV also steals two of the three trophies the V60 (Sweden(!) and Finland), with the other (Belgium) being lost for Tesla, which also collected the Swiss #1, the Renault Zoe resisted in France and Austria, while the Twizy simply disappeared from the map. Finally, the BMW i3 has won its domestic market, while also collecting some secondary markets.

IV. Other Markets

For some reason (Low volumes, rare data, etc) some markets have been left-out, here is a chance to know some of them:

Israel: 6 Nissan Leaf sold in 2014, while last year, there had been 436 Renault Fluence ZE sold, as well as 24 Nissan Leaf. This market is the sole market where EV's are having a bad time.

Slovenia: Tesla Model S - 13(!) units; Opel Ampera (2); Peugeot iOn (1); BMW i3 (1). Brilliant performance by Tesla, something that Nicola Tesla would be proud of...The existing Tesla Supercharger in Slovenia should also help, of course. Anyway, 0.05% EV Share is how this small market currently stands, with talks that VW will finally join it, things could only get better in 2015!

Brazil: Renault Twizy - 34 units; BMW i3 (30). These are the first steps of a market with tremendous potential, will 2015 be the Year Zero?

Turkey: Renault Twizy - 18 units. Far from the 92 Renault Fluence ZE registered in 2012, the Turkish EV slowly rebounding from the 2013 sales slump (Only one unit sold then).

UAE: Renault Twizy - 33 units; BMW i8 (1). Yes, plug-ins have arrived here, and the i8 should sell like hot cakes here, thanks to its appealing design.

Slovakia: Nissan Leaf - 24 units.

Morocco: Renault Twizy - 35 units. Building on the 7 units registered in 2013, the french thingy is creating a small market for it here, maybe Renault should invest in promting the Twizy in warmer-climate countries, where the lack of real windows don't impact so much.

V. Predictions for the G8

USA - 150.000 units/year, Leaf #1;

Japan - 32.000 units/year, Leaf #1;

France - 19.000 units/year, Zoe #1;

Netherlands - 19.000 units/year, Outlander #1;

Germany - 20.000 units/year, German Car #1;

China - 120.000 units/year, Qin #1.
Norway - 25.000 units/year, Leaf #1.

UK - 20.000 untis, Outlander PHEV #1.

Spain December 2014

It has the home advantage here, but can it win away too?

1-2 Win for Nissan

We start our round for December with Spain, which has the added bonus of new data regarding LCV's and a surprise win there, but more on that later...

The year ended on a strong note, with 287 units sold, second best result of the year, placing the YTD sales at 1.956 units, a new record for the Spanish EV Market, and a 53% improvement over 2013. The EV Share also had a small jump, establishing itself at 0,228%, above the 0,176% of 2013.

Looking at the December models ranking, the Nissan Leaf collected another monthly trophy (Fifth in a row), with 71 registrations (Second Best Result of the year) and 465 YTD, the best yearly performance in Spain by any model not named Renault Twizy.

But the real news came in Second, with Nissan's utilitarian e-NV200 registering 46 units in December and 184 YTD, placing the japanese offering ahead of the LCV sales champion Kangoo ZE (164 units YTD), sure, being built in Barcelona gives the e-NV200 a home advantage, but nevertheless, it is a warning sign for Renault and an indication that Nissan might have another winner here.

On the YTD ranking, the undisputed leader was the Nissan Leaf (24% share, 3% more than last year), which repeated this year the Best Seller title won in 2013, while the Renault Zoe ended in the runner-up position, with 289 units, a 53% increase over last year, and the last position of the podium was for the first time for a plug-in hybrid, the Mitsu Outlander PHEV surprised everyone and ended in #3, tripling at the same time the global PHEV share to 15%.

By brands, after winning in 2012 and 2013, Renault (34%) got again the title, but this time it had to sweat to remain in front of Nissan (33%), while BMW (12%) took the Bronze medal from Mitsubishi (12%) in the final stage, thanks to another brilliant performance from the i8 sports-car (5 units in December, #10 YTD, ahead of the Panamera Plug-In and Tesla!). As a whole, the Renault-Nissan Alliance as a group got 67% share, so this is a market that is deeply-in-Alliance turf.

A final reference for Volkswagen, while it was the Best Selling Brand in the global market, regarding plug-ins it only got 2%(!) share. Those EV prices have to come down, VW...
After a accurate preview of 2014, 2015 should continue to see the Spanish EV Market growing, with sales reaching at least 3.000 units (If incentives continue, of course), while the Nissan Leaf will try to defend its crown from the competition, both form the inside (Renault Zoe) as from the outside (Outlander PHEV).

World Top 20 December 2013 (Special Edition)

Models - Leaf has met his opponent

With a massive 28.000 plug-ins sold in December, the global market for electric cars continues to grow at a healthy rate, ending the year with more than 210.0000 units, with record sales from several models, like the Leaf (4.960 units), Outlander PHEV (6.887 units!), Volvo V60 Plug-In (2.004) or the Tesla Model S (2.803).

Looking at the full year ranking, the first position was for the Nissan Leaf with a record 47.549 units, followed by the Chevy Volt (28.252).

In #3 the Prius Plug-In finally won over Tesla's Model S, with a difference of just 989 units between them.

Behind them we see the #5 Outlander PHEV, running at warp speed and being the only model to give Nissan a run for its money on the monthly ranking. This particular fight will go on in 2014, making the race for the Best Selling EV just a bit more interesting.

In Seventh YTD, the Volvo V60 Plug-In achieved yet another record in December, being with the Outlander the two biggest surprises of the year.

Because this is a full year edition, the ranking includes cars from #11 to #20, where we can see some interesting facts, like the Smart Fortwo ED in #13 and looking for a Top 10 position in '14, just like the #20 BMW i3, that has been slowly increasing sales. The e-Up! will surely feature in the Top 10, with strong initial sales (#8 in December) and still expanding to new markets.

Manufacturers - Mitsubishi #3

In the Manufacturers ranking, Mitsubishi is going from strength to strength, selling a record 7.042 units, climbing again and ending the year in #3.

Above it we've got Nissan in #1 with 23% share, followed from a far by #2 Chevrolet with 14% share.

Tesla ended in #5 with 11% share, surpassed by Mitsubishi in December, but comfortably ahead of a troubled #6 Renault and a steady #7 Ford.

Looking below the #10 Smart, we assist two rising powers: VW in #13 and BMW in #14, both of them with Top 10 ambitions in 2014.

Nissan Edition

Looking at the models ranking, the Nissan Leaf won the Best Selling EV title in Japan, repeating the 2011 title, but next year it will have to deal with the Outlander PHEV, ending the year on a strong note.

UK December 2013 (Draft Edition)

Nissan Leaf feeling at home in the UK

Leaf #1 Edition

After many solicitations asking for this post, i've decided to publish a draft with the current data.
3.739 plug-ins were sold in the United Kingdom, a 26% over last year with the #1 Nissan Leaf carrying the bulk of the sales, with 1.812 units sold, almost three times more(!) than it did last year, you can say that the "Sunderland" factor did its magic here.

The rest of the podium is the same as last year, with #2 for the Prius Plug-In, followed by the Vauxhall Ampera, that keeps its third spot but it's threatened by the Renault Zoe, in #4, and the Volvo V60 Plug-In, in#5 .

Many newcomers at the second half of the ranking, with the BMW i3 being the one to watch for in 2014, probably going for the podium in the in end of '14.

Speaking of the future, Volvo, with the V60 Plug-In, and Mitsubishi, with the Outlander PHEV, are strong candidates at the podium,  just like the aforementioned BMW i3, pressuring both Renault and Toyota, while Nissan will keep on growing without caring on what goes behind it.

All this must push sales to some 5.000 units/year.

Markets Roundup December 2013 (Special Edition)

Ford C-Max Energi: Miss

I. A Year Ago - Hits and Misses

In the end of last January, i have made some sales predictions regarding 2013, let's see how they worked out:

USA

* 15.000 sales for the C-Max Energi - Not even half (7.154), miss;

* 6.000 sales for the Fusion Energi - 6.090 units sold, right on target;

* 12.000 sales for Tesla - 17.650 sales, Tesla consistently outpaced predictions, including their owns;

* 90-110.000 sales for the US EV market - 96.034 units, comfortably within the prediction boundaries.

Japan

* 6.000 units for the Outlander PHEV - Some 10.000 sold this year, with production problems. Not  even Mitsu was this expecting such a sales success;

* 29.000 sales for the Japanese EV Market - Around 30.000 units, hit;

France

* 2.000-4.000 sales for the Renault Zoe - 5.511 sales. Looking back, i was surprisingly skeptical of the Zoe, i mean, the french supermini wasn't a sales success, but it also wasn't as bad as i predicted;

*14-16.000 sales for the French EV Market - 14.905 sales, right in the middle of the prediction boundaries.

Germany

* 10.000 sales for the German EV Market - 6.714 sales, well behind expectations. Miss.

Netherlands

* 2.200 sales for the Prius Plug-In - 2.364 units, saved by the last quarter sales. Hit;

* 3.500 sales for the Opel Ampera - With 2.208 units sold, even the sales from the last quarter weren't enough to reach near the prediction. Big miss;

* 9.000 units sold in the Dutch EV market - 23.170 sales, 9.311 of them in December. Who would of thought?

Norway

7.000-8.500 sales in Norway - 8.669 sales, slightly above the best expectations. At the time i was speaking of 6% EV Share like something amazing, as it turns out, the EV Share in Norway is now at 6,10%...

Global EV Sales

200.000 units - Still with data coming in, the number already exceeds 208.000, so 2013 was a good year for plug-ins.

II. Engines of Growth

* By EV Share

Two of them are easy to discover, after all, plug-in performance were profusely documented in Norway (6,10% in '13 vs 3,12 in '12) and the Netherlands (5,55% in '13 vs 1,10% in '12). But the third market is something of a surprise, with the EV Share in Iceland jumping from 0,21% in 2012 to 0,94% in '13! With all the hydro-thermal energy they have and the small distances associated to an island, EV sales in Iceland should continue to grow exponentially and maybe become something like a Second Norway...

* By Volume

EV Share is important, but even more fundamental is the volume increase, and in this case we had the USA as the main contributor, with more 41.084 units sold regarding 2012, the Netherlands, with more 17.587 sales, and...China, even with a miserable 0,08% EV Share, what matters here is volume and 0,08% of 22 million cars is still a lot of cars, and plug-ins sold more 4.851 regarding last year.

III. 2013 vs 2012

Let's compare #1's of this year with the ones of 2012:

Volt - USA (In '12 - Volt); Canada (Volt)

Leaf - Norway (In '12 - Leaf); UK (Leaf); Spain (Twizy); Denmark (Fluence ZE); Australia (I-Miev); Estonia (I-Miev); Iceland (I-Miev)

Outlander PHEV - Japan (In '12 - Prius Plug-In); Netherlands (Opel Ampera);

Zoe - France (In '12 - Kangoo ZE); Switzerland (Twizy); Austria (Twizy)

V60 Plug-In - Belgium (In '12 - Twizy); Sweden (Prius Plug-In); Finland (Prius Plug-In)

Twizy - Italy (In '12 - Twizy); Portugal (Twizy)

Fortwo ED - Germany (In '12 - Twizy)

Fluence ZE - Hong Kong (In '12 - Leaf)

QQ3 EV - China (In '12 - QQ3 EV)

Examining this, we can see North America as a Volt stronghold, the Leaf stealing trophies from the I-Miev, the Outlander and V60 doing the same at the Prius, the Zoe cannibalizing #1's in Central Europe and the Twizy resisting extinction in the south of the continent.

IV. Other Markets

Europe December 2013

The Nissan Leaf was this year Europe's favorite frog EV

Deceiving Edition

Another month, another sales record, with 14.057 units sold, making this the fifth straight month of growth for the European EV market, but these are deceiving numbers, because they are highly influenced by the last freak months in the Netherlands. If we discard those sales, we see more usual numbers (4.748 sales), but still 85% above last December, so yes, europeans are more into plug-ins, but unlike the Dutch, they are not feverishly rushing into dealerships to buy EV's...Anyway, the 67.000 plug-ins sold in 2013 represents a 51% rise over last year, positive numbers indeed.

Looking at the models YTD ranking, December made plenty of changes to it, thanks to new models and the inflated dutch market, the most important change was the Outlander PHEV climbing three spots to #3, thanks to a record-setting sales month (5.003 units!), just behind the Renault Zoe (#2) but still some distance away from the 2013 Best Selling EV in Europe, the Nissan Leaf, which more than doubled sales from one year to the other, selling 10.885 units in 2013. What a price drop can do to improve sales...

But changes in this dynamic market didn't stopped there, the Model S rose to #7, the Opel Ampera benefited from the dutch fever to climb two positions into #8 (But last year it was #2...), the VW e-Up! jumped six positions to #11 (VW, if doesn't get greedy, might have a winner here), beating the BMW i3 (Up one position to #12) in their private duel.

On the flip side, December was horrible for the Renault Twizy, selling just 149 units (Worst selling month ever) and losing three positions to end the year in #10, with 2.990 units. And to think that just last year it was #1 with 9.013 units sold...And the Ampera was #2 with 6.631 sales! How things have changed...

Looking at the brands ranking, Renault is still #1, with 27% Share (Last year it was 37%), followed by Nissan (16%) and Mitsubishi (14%).

Guessing for the '14 trends, discarding possible freak events, we will see sales reach some 60-70.000 units, with Mitsubishi headlining VW, Tesla and Volvo as the new contenders for the best selling title, and Renault and Nissan trying to stay ahead of all that competition. One thing is for certain, if the last few months were entertaining in the Europe ranking, 2014 promises to be even more interesting to follow.
