Race for #2 Edition

With 228 plug-ins sold to date, the explosive growth registered last year in NZ has slowered to much slower rate, up only 16%, with the EV Share at 0.24% vs 0.20% last year.

Looking at the models ranking, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is the undisputed leader, although sales are down from the 159 units of last year to the current 110 sales, were buyers waiting for the restyled model?

Below the japanese SUV, there is an interesting race developing between the BMW i3 and Nissan Leaf, with the japanese trying to recover the runner-up position won last year.


Finally, the Tesla Model S climbs to #5, thanks to 4 sales last month, its best performance here.

Outlander PHEV #1 Edition

With 160 plug-ins sold to date, the explosive growth registered last year in NZ is down to a slower rate, up 15% regarding the same period last year, with the EV Share now at 0.25% vs 0.20% in '14.

Looking at the models ranking, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV continues to lead, although sales are down 42% regarding last year, is this the real demand for the japanese SUV or are buyers waiting for the restyled model?

All other models (Except the soon dead Holden Volt) register sales increases, with the Nissan Leaf recovering last month the Third spot from the Audi A3 e-Tron.

A final note on the Holden Volt performance, numbers were never significant (5 units in 2012, two in '13, 9 last year), high prices and small consumer awareness lead to these disappointing results...But now that the EV market is gaining visibility and there's a new, improved (and cheaper) Volt right around the corner, what does GM do? They cancel the Holden Volt Mk2!!! But, why?!?!? All it was needed was to change the logo!!! And i thought OLD GM had gone away for good...

Party Crasher Edition

With 95 plug-ins sold to date, the NZ plug-in market continues to grow at an impressive rate, doubling the number of registrations regarding the same period last year (With the EV Share now at 0,29% vs 0.20% in '14).

This time it's not only the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV pulling the market up, but also the recent landing of the German Armada, comanded by the #2 BMW i3 (19 units), and helped by the Porsche Cayenne Plug-In (4 units), but the car that might steal the show away from the japanese SUV is another german car, the newbie Audi A3 e-Tron landed with a bang (13 units in its first complete sales month), if these first signs are to be trusted, then the Outlander might have found a serious contender for the Best Seller party trophy.

The Nissan Leaf (10 units, none of them in March), isn't handling very well the pace of their new direct competitors, while the Holden Volt...Well, with the killing of the Opel Ampera in Europe, the Holden version of the Volt might also be living its last months on the market, which would be pretty ironic, GM euthanizing their PHEV offering right on the time that the local EV market starts to come out of obscurity...

A Sales Success. Even with an ugly face...

Outlander All The Way Edition

With 197 plug-ins, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV single-handily pulled this market from obscurity to a decent place in EV-land, with an EV Share big enough (0,20% share) to put to shame other markets, all this when only 8 units were registered in the previous year and the previous volume record was 24 units, set in 2012, making this Year One for EV's in New Zealand.

Following it, we have the Nissan Leaf in #2 with 37 sales this year, while the Holden Volt ended tied in #3 with the BMW i3, a car that promises to take the runner-up place from the Nissan hatch.

Not that it means a lot for the moment, due to previous low volumes, but Mitsubishi has won almost every Best-Seller trophy here (2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014), only letting escape the 2012 title for Nissan.

Outlander Rules Edition

This (still) small EV market had 197 plug-ins sold this year (0,23% share), which is an exponential growth regarding last year, when only 8 units were registered, making this Year One for EV's in New Zealand.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV continues to impress, selling 20 units last month (159 YTD), giving credit to those who believed that the japanese SUV would crack this market. 

Following it, we have the Nissan Leaf in #2 with 30 sales this year, while the Holden Volt is #3 with just 8 units sold.

Even the Holden Volt saw its sales rise 

Outlander PHEV Carries New Zealand EV's to New Heights

Many didn't see this coming, but the arrival of the Outlander PHEV to New Zealand kickstarted for real the Kiwi EV market, selling 129 units to date, which means that the japanese e-SUV sells more in one month than the rest of the competition sold in years!

Even the other two contenders benefited from Mitsu success and hype, both selling now way more than in past years, with all this unexpected sales level (158 to date), the EV Share jumped to 0,22%, eons above last year 0,007% and above the score of neighboring Australia (0,02% share in '14), which registered 114 plug-ins (79 Leaf and 35 Volt) until June, despite having a global market several times larger than NZ. . .

Will the Outlander PHEV do the same stunt in Australia? Or will that role go to the upcoming arrivals of Tesla and BMW?

PHEV's eat into regular hybrid sales

Thanks to this board, courtesy of David from MIA organization, we can see the sales of different types of hybrids and electric cars, and a curious number here is that the arrival of the Outlander PHEV coincided with the sinking of the Toyota Prius V and Peugeot 3008 Hybrid 4 sales, both of which can be considered as rivals of the Mitsubishi SUV, so one can say that Plug-in Hybrids will be the next stage of success for regular hybrids (Wink, wink, Toyota and Honda).
