Commercial Van Sales In America - November 2016 YTD

U.S. commercial van sales dropped 5% in November 2016, dragged down by losses at the two highest-volume commercial van producers in America.

The Ford Transit, for the first time in its U.S. sales history, posted a year-over-year loss. That 23% drop, combined with the smaller Transit Connect's 36% decline, caused total Ford van sales to fall 17%. GM commercial van sales, likewise across three nameplates, fell 9%.

Mercedes-Benz also reported declines with both of its nameplates. 

Nissan's NV and NV200 were both on the rise in November, as they are this year. 

Ram's largest ProMaster more than doubled its volume, year-over-year, but the smaller ProMaster City saw its volume chopped in half.

Canadian sales of commercial vans rose 7% in November 2016, pushed along by General Motors and Mercedes-Benz.

Though Ford Motor Company, the biggest holder of market share in the Canadian van segment, lost 122 sales with declines from all three of its entrants, those losses were cancelled out by 313 additional full-size GM van sales.

The Ford Transit was nevertheless Canada's best-selling commercial van in November 2016. Mercedes-Benz grew its market share to 14% from 11% one year ago. GM increased its market share to 34% in November 2016 from 30% in November 2015.

Canadian sales of commercial vans jumped 8% despite the overall market's downturn in October 2016, no thanks to small cargo vans.

Led by the Ford Transit Connect, small commercial van volume slid 6% and is up just 3% in 2016 despite the addition of a new nameplate. The Mercedes-Benz Metris, reviewed by GCBC earlier this year, earned 20% market share in the sub-sector in October.

Full-size commercial vans continue to be the category's major draw.The Ford Transit, however, posted a modest 2% downturn in October. The Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana combined for 1010 sales, topping the Ford full-sizers by 67 units. 

Year-to-date, 42% of the commercial vans sold in Canada have been Fords. General Motors owns 28% of the category, Mercedes-Benz 14%, Ram 10%, and Nissan 6%.

Led by the Ford Transit, full-size van sales jumped 5%, a gain of 1839 units. Transit volume rose 9% to 10,202 units, 30% of the full-size sector. 

Ford's share of the small commercial van category, however, fell to 42% from 64% a year ago because Transit Connect volume plunged 62% in October 2016, hampered by a recall.

The Transit Connect wasn't the only van to sell far less often in October 2016 than in October 2015. 

Chevrolet City Express sales tumbled 70%. 

GMC Savana volume was down 45%.
