January 2017 Canada SUV And Crossover Sales Rankings - Top 99 Best-Selling SUVs In Canada - Every SUV Ranked

After the Toyota RAV4 finally knocked the Ford Escape off its its Canadian SUV sales leadership throne in calendar year 2016, the Honda CR-V was Canada's top-selling SUV/crossover in January 2017.

The first month of 2017 marked the first full month of availability – albeit somewhat limited availability in many trims and many regions – for the fifth-gen CR-V. Sales of the CR-V jumped 40% to 2851 units, an all-time January high.

The CR-V led an SUV/crossover sector that jumped by more than 11% to nearly 48,000 units, equal to 43% of the overall new vehicle market. Together, the CR-V and its four top-selling rivals – account for nearly three out of every ten SUV/crossover sales in January 2017.

Canada's top-selling premium utility vehicle in January 2017 was the 25th-ranked Lexus RX, sales of which rose 6% to 554 units. The RX, like the top-ranked Honda CR-V and third-ranked Toyota RAV4, is built in Canada.

The fastest-growing SUV/crossover nameplates in Canada in January 2017 were the Fiat 500X, Lexus LX, Mazda CX-9, Nissan Armada, and Porsche Macan. 

Among vehicles that produce meaningful volume, the Buick Encore's 85% jump was significant, as was the Kia Sportage's 74% leap to 730 January sales.

Canadian passenger car sales slid 5% in January 2017 as the car sector's share of the Canadian market tumbled to just 29% last month, down from 31% one year ago.

Despite a 10% year-over-year decline, the Honda Civic was still Canada's best-selling car in January. Honda will attempt to make 2017 the 20th consecutive year in which the Civic is Canada's most popular car.

The Civic ranked third overall among new vehicles, well back of two pickup trucks. 10.4% of the new cars sold in Canada last month were Civics. The ten best-selling car nameplates earned just under half of all new vehicle sales.

The 13th-ranked Mercedes-Benz C-Class and 17th-ranked Audi A4 were Canada's top luxury nameplates. Ranked 12th overall, the Toyota Camry topped the midsize class, just as Toyota prepares the launch of an all-new model.

January also welcomed the arrival of the Chevrolet Bolt and Hyundai Ioniq. The Infiniti Q60, Mazda MX-5 Miata, BMW Z4, Fiat 500, and Dodge Challenger were Canada's fastest-growing car nameplates. The Audi A4's 195% jump to 570 units made it the fastest-growing volume car nameplate.
