A surprising #1 in Germany, the Zoe  proves that Electric Cars that size can be hot sellers  

On your marks...Get Set...

Sales were down 18% YoY, to 1.622 units, the worst result in 15 months, with the EV Share dropping 0.64%, which could be explained by the fact that many buyers are waiting just a few more days for the incentives scheme to start and then it's everyone for himself in a race to get a brand new EV.

Looking at May models ranking, the Renault Zoe was again the Best Seller of the month, with 232 units, seemingly unaffected by the incentives waiting compass (Actually, sales are up 123% YoY...)  followed by a group of local players, among them, the 225xe Active Tourer (#5, with 77 deliveries), delivering a year best performance.

Despite being a slow month, that didn't stopped the German EV market to deliver changes and some surprises to the YTD ranking, if the Renault Zoe kept the leadership and the BMW i3 the runner-up position, below them there were enough changes to keep this market as one of the most interesting to follow: The Audi A3 rose two positions to #3, the VW Passat GTE climbed another position to #6 and the BMW 225xe Active Tourer also went up one position to #11.

In the lower part of the ranking, a mention to the 73 deliveries of the Kia Soul EV, its best performance this year, allowing it to rise two positions to #14.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Volkswagen continues in the Top Spot, with 19% share (Down 1%), followed by BMW (17%) and in Third we have Renault (15%, up 1%), benefiting from the recent good results of its Zoe Best Seller.

If the Audi A7 and Mercedes CLS are out of reach, the Third Placed BMW 6-Series is perfectly attainable by the Californian in June, all while the Panamera waits for a new generation to get back into the game.


(*) - Considering that the German market is one of the hardest for Tesla to crack, the models we are comparing are not the volume sellers like the Audi A6 or BMW 5-Series, but those that are closer in concept and price to the Californian Sports Sedan.

Germany EV Incentives




After a looong discussion, the German government has finally decided to lauch a decent incentives package to promote plug-in vehicles, but there aren't still any published official documents on the incentives.

An informed EVS reader tipped me on this, just an unofficial thread (http://www.goingelectric.de/forum/bmw-i3-allgemeines/abwicklung-des-umweltbonus-bei-bmw-t17054.html) where a consumer shares what he heard from a BMW dealer. The dealers received the information about the incentives on May 25th.
The incentives were decided by the German Government on May 18th and the linked thread claims that any car purchase that was made from May 19th on is eligible for the incentives. The 60.000€ is the price without taxes, this means that cars up to 71.400€ base price can profit. This cover pretty much all models, except the Tesla, XC90, Q7, i8 or the Cayenne for example.
BMW will reduce the price (Including taxes) by another 1.500€, the incentives are worth 2.000€ (Without taxes) or 2.380€ (Including taxes), so 3.880€ from BMW plus 2.000€ from the state (http://www.bafa.de/bafa/de/wirtschaftsfoerderung/elektromobilitaet/index.htmlis where the car buyer has to claim the 2.000€ from the state) makes 5.880€ in total for BMW BEV cars. The vehicle tax exemption (~50€ per year for a BEV) remains at 10 years.
If these kind of incentives are spreaded across the several EV makers, then we will probably have a huge opportunity for the German Plug-in market to grow significantly and become the largest of the Old Continent.

Last month i made an article for the EAFO newsletter, analyzing the impact of Plug-ins in the German auto market and the Picture presented wasn't very flattering, the only segment where EV's had a significant share (As in more than 1%) was the E-Segment (Audi A6, BMW 5-Series), where Plug-ins had 2.35% share, all thanks to the disruptive Tesla Model S...

The other class above 1% was the B-Segment (BMW i3, Renault Zoe), with only 1.05%, so there is a lot of room to grow, i really think/hope this will be an important move for Plug-ins in Europe and will probably be the most significant event in the 2016 Euro EV-Scene.

The Renault Zoe holds on to #1 in Germany


Before Incentives...

Despite being a slow month, that didn't stopped the German EV market to present several changes to the YTD ranking, for example, if the Renault Zoe keep for the time being the leadership (No small feat in this EV market), below it the were moves aplenty: The BMW i3 rose one position to Second Place, the VW Golf GTE also climbed one position to #3, while the Nissan Leaf dropped out of the podium and fell two positions to Fourth. In a good month for Volkswagen, the Passat GTE and even the e-Golf climbed one position, to #7 and #11, respectively.

In the lower part of the ranking, a mention to the 74 deliveries of the Renault Twizy, its best performance in almost two years, allowing it to jump seven positions to #15, while the BMW 330e is picking up pace, having registered a record 47 units, climbing one position to #19, but more significantly, beating for the first time the monthly result of the Mercedes C350e (43 units).

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Volkswagen continues in the Top Spot, with 20% share (Up 1%), followed by BMW (17%, up 2%) and in Third we now have Renault (14%, also up 2%).

An interesting statistic is that the Model S is the only model in the ranking with YoY growth (+27%), while every other model is having a two digit sales drop, with steep dives in some cases, like the Merc CLS (-30%) or the Panamera (-41%!).

Tesla is being disruptive, even in the cut-throat German Premium market...

Zoe Holds On To #1

Sales were up a timid 9% YoY, to 2.418 units, with the EV Share steady at 0.74%, which could be explained by the fact that many consumers are waiting for the incentives policy to be finally changed, maybe then the market share finally can reach the symbolic 1% barrier.

Looking at the Monthly models ranking, in March we had an all-electric podium, with three BEV's in the highest places of the ranking, with the particular fact that the Tesla Model S has reached a new sales record in Germany, with 267 units, enough to beat the BMW 6-Series (All variants included) by 40 units, with the Mercedes CLS (344 units) and Audi A7 (337) not very far in the Sports-Sedan-Thingy race, if the american car should beat them in their home soil, it should signal it as (another) Alarm call to German Premium brands that Tesla is eating their cake...

The Tesla Model S jumped four positions to #6, while the VW Passat GTE climbed one position to #8 and the Volvo XC90 PHEV climbed two positions to #10.

Looking For EV's - Germany April 2016 (Berlin)



Only in Berlin: Citroen C-Zero, the I-Miev french cousin, parked with a fleet of Trabants on the other side of the fence.

Having been in Berlin for a couple of days, naturally i did a bit of EV searching, with the only species spotted being a bunch of I-Miev family cars, one Model S, one BMW i3 (Company car), one e-Up! and...not much else.

Germany February 2016



Zoe #1 Edition

Despite an EV market up 78% YoY, the EV Share is still at 0.74%, with many consumers probably waiting for the incentives policy to be finally approved, maybe then the market share finally can reach the symbolic 1% barrier.

After the Kia Soul EV stealing the show in 2015, the German EV market is back at its usual self, with various candidates to Number One and several changes in the top positions, this time it was the Renault Zoe turn to seat at the Leader's Throne, but the local runners are really close, especially the VW Golf GTE (#2, 11 units behind) and BMW i3 (#3, 15 units less), so the french hatch has to keep a close eye on the rearview mirror, if it wants to keep the #1 position a little longer.

A special mention to the Audi Q7 e-Tron, now in full speed and registering 123 units, already leading the hot Luxury SUV segment and only 27 units behind the Outlander PHEV, so the SUV leadership might be near for Audi's Panzer.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Volkswagen continues in the Top Spot, with 20% share (Down 1%), followed by BMW (16%, down 2%) and in Third we now have Audi (13%), benefitting from a positive month of the A3 e-Tron and the aforementioned Q7's e-Tron push.

Will this year be "The Empire Strikes Back" Year?

Golf GTE back to #1 Edition

In a market up 11% YoY, there the models ranking had a complete reshuffle, with the VW Golf GTE starting the year in First Place (As it did last year), with 171 units, followed by the BMW i3 and Renault Zoe, while at the bottom of the table, the Merc GLE500e (finally) started to step up speed, having sold  a record 29 units, but it is still below the class leaders Audi Q7 e-Tron (Another Cruise Ship gaining momentum) and Volvo XC90 PHEV, both with 43 units.

After the Kia Soul EV stealing the show in 2015, this year it looks that the Korean Cute-Ute will have a hard time to win it again, having started the year in #15, with only 37 units, its worst performance in a year.


Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Volkswagen continues glued to the Top Spot, with 21% share, followed closely by BMW (18%) and in Third we have Mercedes, with 11% share, making this a 100% domestic podium, will this be they year that local automakers will take over the top positions completely?
