"All hail the new Sales Champion!" |
The Game Changer Edition
Like in the UK and other countries, the complete Australian sales data is only available every Quarter of the Year, so now i can post the full year EV sales there.
The inclusion of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV in the Aussie ranking changed the whole picture, from a market with stagnating sales (304 units sold in'13 vs 279 sales last year without the Mitsu), to an amazing sales record of 1.181 units (And a respectable 0,11% EV Share), the circa 900 sales of the Mitsu Outlander PHEV shattered every record in Australia and were a true game-changer in this market and, just like in neighboring New Zealand, 2014 became Year One for plug-ins in Australia, all thanks to the japanese SUV.
The Nissan Leaf was relegated to #2 with 173 units sold, which is 15 units less than the year before, but the chronic runner-up Holden Volt fared even worse, selling almost half of what it did in 2013 and less than the 80 units registered in its debut year, ending the year in #3. Now that there's a Second Generation Volt being showcased in the Detroit Auto Show, one wonders if there will be a future for this model Down Under.
In #4 was the newcomer BMW i3, with 33 units, with BMW ambitious i-sub brand performing better than expected a bit throughout the world, the Leaf should look out for this chunky Bimmer, if it wants to stay ahead of it.
Finally, in #5, the Tesla Model S just arrived in time to show on the 2014 ranking, but its ambitions are far greater than the last place on the ranking.
After Nissan hitting the Top Spot the previous year, Mitsubishi returned with a vengeance and resumed the domination of this market (Best Seller in 2010, 2011, 2012 and now 2014) it had before.
Regarding 2015, i think sales rise significantly, although the Leaf might see its sales soften a little (Will the Volt disappear in the meantime?), but new sales from Mitsubishi, Tesla and BMW should pull the numbers to a new record in both volume (I'm guessing 2.000 units) and EV Share.
