Outlander PHEV and Sweden: A Love Affair lasting since 2013 |
Records Edition - Outlander PHEV Goes Ballistic
The upcoming fiscal changes have created an enormous impact in December, with Swedish EV sales going through the roof, registering 2.080 units, up four-fold regarding the same time last year, while also shattering the previous sales record (905 sales last June).
The EV Share is up again to 2.62%, a new record that places Sweden as the Fourth market with highest percentage of plug-in share, only behind Norway, Netherlands and Iceland, while representing a significant departure from the 1.66% of 2014 and 0.71% of 2013.
Total sales in 2015 stood at 9.039 units, 80% above the last year result.
Looking at the last month ranking, the Mitsu Outlander PHEV took the most profit from the sales anticipation, leading the Monthly ranking with a stratospheric 1.249 sales, a significant departure from the previous monthly record of 428 units registered in June '14 by the same Outlander PHEV, this performance allowed it to reach #7 in the global ranking and #2 in the SUV's, only behind the Volvo XC60.
Below the japanese SUV, the Tesla Model S also has beaten its pb, registering 172 units, staying ahead of the rising star VW Passat GTE, Third with 154 units, followed by two Volvos: the V60 Plug-In was #4 with 129 units (Best result since Feb. '13!) and the XC90 T8 appeared for the first time in the Top 5, with 92 units.
As a curious fact, the last time there were two Volvos in the Top 5 (February 2013), the total sales were 277, the Best Seller was the V60 Plug-in (182 registrations) and the C30 Electric was #5, with...3 units.

Looking at the YTD chart, the last minute changes were the Tesla Model S surpassing the Nissan Leaf to #2, the Renault Zoe rising to #6, while the newcomers VW Passat GTE and Volvo XC90 T8 jumped to #11 and #12, respectively.
On the manufacturers ranking, Mitsubishi renewed last year Title by a mile (36%), ahead of Nissan (13%) in Second and Volkswagen (12%) in #3.
Below, you will find the 2015 Trophy Room:
Best Selling PHEV & SUV: Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, 3.297 units, 44% above the last year winner, also the Outlander PHEV;
Best Selling BEV: Tesla Model S, 996 units, double the numbers of the 2014 winner, the Nissan Leaf, but the real competitors of Tesla are still far: The Audi A6 sold 5.496 units, the BMW 5-Series, 4439 units and the Mercedes E-Class, 2.733;
Best Selling Small Car: Renault Zoe, 378 units, 80% above the numbers of last year winner, the BMW i3;
Best Selling Van: Nissan e-NV200 / Evalia, 299 units, a 24% improvement over the number presented by the 2014 winner, the Renault Kangoo ZE, which by the way, had in 2015 its worst year (135 units) since 2011.
Looking at the BEV / PHEV share, pure electrics recovered 5% share, ending with 40%.
In 2016 the Mitsu Outlander PHEV should make the treble and win another Best Seller title, but it has to keep an eye on the VW Passat GTE, while the Volvo XC90 T8 and Tesla will erode their domination. As for sales predictions, i would go with some 9k-11k units, a slower growth due to what it should be a slow start, but also because of less attractive incentives.
