Sweden's plug-in favorite |
We start the year with Sweden, which registered 1.229 units, a 373% improvement over the same period last year, with the EV Share hitting once again record heights, at 5.3%(!).
Looking at the monthly models ranking, after starving deliveries in December, due to the Dutch sales rush, the VW Passat GTE came back with a bang, presenting a record 549 units, representing 49% of all Passat sales and earning it a #8 place in the general ranking, if considered as a single model.
Looking at the Top 5 seats, besides the usual local representatives (Outlander PHEV in#2, V60 #3 and XC90 #4), the surprise came from the Fifth Placed Tesla Model S, which saw its deliveries surge 200% YoY to 58 units, an uncharacteristic good first month of the quarter for the Californian, which could be linked to difficulties in delivering in due time orders that were delayed by the Autopilot 2 production problems.

There were few changes in the ranking regarding the previous year, with the #7 Tesla Model X replicating its older brother behavior and delivering a better than expected month, with 48 units, while the VW e-Up! lived up to its exclamation point, registering 21 units last month, pulling it to #12, nine positions above the #21 of last year.
On the EV manufacturers ranking, Volkswagen (48%) has the market covered, with Volvo (12%) securing the runner-up status, while Mitsubishi (11%) rounds the podium.

Plug-Ins Versus Regular Hybrids
Pl | Model | Jan. |
1 | Volkswagen Passat GTE | 549 |
2 | Toyota Auris Hybrid | 220 |
3 | Kia Niro | 177 |
4 | Toyota Prius | 153 |
5 | Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV | 135 |
Combining January sales of regular hybrids with plug-ins, the big surprise is the VW Passat GTE outselling all other hybrids, with the Toyota Auris Hybrid dropping to Second Place, followed by the Kia Niro and Toyota Prius.
The Kia Crossover is proving to be quite a sales success and breaking the HEV = Toyota formula, now how about a plug-in Niro, Kia?
The other PHEV in the ranking, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, closes this Top 5, with 135 units, pushing the Yaris Hybrid down to Sixth, with 129 units.
