Outlander PHEV Holds the Fort and Wins Spanish Title
The EV market in Spain registered 530 sales last month, the third best result ever, up 42% YoY, with the 2016 sales ending at a record 4.603 units, 53% above the previous year, with the EV Share at a record 0.4%, a small but important step above the 0.3% of last year, with the new MOVEA incentives scheme starting this year, expect sales to continue growing in 2017.
The Best Seller in December was the surprising Citröen C-Zero, with 168 units, that thanks to a car-sharing fleet deal, delivered 468 units in the last two months of the year, shooting for Third Place in 2016, with 496 units, shattering the model previous record, set in the distant year of 2011, when the Sino-French had registered 85 units, allowing then its first (And only) podium seat until 2016.
This deal underlines the local importance of car-sharing fleets and LCV's, as there are two LCV's (Kangoo ZE and Nissan e-NV200) and two car-sharing champs (Smart Fortwo ED and the aforementioned Citröen C-Zero) within the 2016 Top 10, something unparalleled in the World.
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV resisted to the Nissan Leaf in December and won its second consecutive Best Seller title, with 555 units, 43% above last year result, but still far from the all-time record achieved by the Renault Twizy in 2012, with 943 units.
Looking elsewhere, the LCV race between the Renault Kangoo ZE and the Nissan e-NV200 / Evalia was as little bit as exciting as in previous years, with the French van repeating the 2015 win (329 units, a new record), but with the Japanese once again not far behind (308 units).
A special mention for the 22 Tesla Model S deliveries, not only a new monthly record for the American sports-sedan, but the 46 units registered in 2016 shattered the previous record of 15 deliveries in 2014, meaning that 2017 will definitely be Year One for Tesla in Spain, with Superchargers spreading and Stores finally appearing, expect the California-based company to surge this year.
In a relatively stable market regarding models, the Rookie of the Year was the Volvo XC90 T8, #9 with 128 units, succeeding the Audi A3 e-Tron, also #9 in 2015, but with 102 units. The Swede was also the Best Selling Luxury SUV, just ahead of the BMW X5 PHEV.
Looking at the BEV/PHEV breakdown, plug-in hybrids continue to gain ground, growing from 25% share in 2015 to 33% this year.
On the manufacturers ranking, Renault (19%) pulled out a last minute win, surpassing Nissan by just 37 units (890 vs 853), thus earning its fifth consecutive Manufacturers title, earning every trophy since 2012.
BMW ended in Third Place, with 14% share, its best score ever.
